On arch I use an aur package to keep the modules around for a bit, but asahi seems to be able to work fine upgrading without that, might want to check out the order of the triggers that run

merry: I have an USB-to-NVMe SSD based on JMicron JMS583 that has problems in UAS mode and with smartctl. It works mostly fine in usb-storage mode when you disable periodic smart statistics, just a little slower because of the lack of queuing and trim

bcrumb: i don't think asahi/arch is currently showing that problem. but if you install a new kernel, you need to write it somewhere for the firmware to read it. in the future this will be most likely a FAT for UEFI to read directly. so you need to have fat support to write that. if fat is a module you might already have removed the module you need after the kernel upgrade. so no fat module -> no way to give
