Is it correct that m1n1 uses the last device tree it finds and update-m1n1 adds all device trees from /lib/modules/*-arch? I was confused by having an old (not from repo) kernel installed and it seemed like that device tree won. Might be better to point at dtbs from linux-asahi explicitly? Or am I missing some device tree choice mechanism?

m1n1 uses the devicetree embedded in the second stage m1n1+dtb+u-boot bundle. there should be only a single dtb for each device. if there are more per device the first will likely be used. I think update-m1n1 was written in the expectation that there is only a single kernel (version) installed

with linux-asahi-edge that not true anymore but shouldn't cause issues as both kernels have identical dtbs

yeah, with those two it should be fine

or install non-repo kernels without the -ARCH suffix
<steffen[m]>
I guess setting DTBS= in /etc/default/update-m1n1 should work if I want to force a specific dtb in the future. for now I'm just removing the old dir

> Hi! which is better on asahi, wayland or X?
<cy8aer>
It depends. IMHO wayland did not have as many problems for the gpu stuff than X but on the other hand X programs do have very blurry fonts when running on XWayland (just waiting for the 100% gtk3/wayland ready emacs 29...)

Hi, I have a question about mounting MacOs volume/partition. Is it possible to mount APFS? I am rookie definitely.
<tomatojuicer>
"Filesystem type apfs not configured in kernel" when I try to mount "Container" from file manager.
corion has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
tomatojuicer: the kernel doesnt support it, but there is a FUSE that supports it
<j`ey>
'supports it', not sure how much to trust it
<chadmed>
apfs is kinda flakey even in macos tbqh i wouldnt trust the fuse driver with any of my data
<tomatojuicer>
I want to be able to share files between macos and asahi.
<tomatojuicer>
Is it better to create an extra FAT partition to do this.
<j`ey>
better to make a FAT partition for that
<tomatojuicer>
oh ok
<chadmed>
both macos and linux support exfat
<chadmed>
you can use an exfat usb drive or just make an exfat partition
vup has joined #asahi
<tomatojuicer>
thanks, i will try exfat
<tomatojuicer>
also, in future, when asahi enters stable channel, will I need to reinstall it, or can it be updated from software-update in itself?
<j`ey>
stable channel?
<chadmed>
i think they mean when it stops being "alpha"

So, I went back to macos and created a partition exfat from macos drive. Came back to asahi, and when desktop is loading, the plasma-program crashed.
<tomatojuicer>
and, it was blinking entire screen after every 2ish seconds with black color.
<tomatojuicer>
and, I went to report the crash, but it says crash info is not useful tho!
<tomatojuicer>
so, i don't know now. I can share files with exfat partition now.
<tomatojuicer>
I saved the .kcrash file. But, what should I do to check dmesg? I am extra fool at linux atm

Could it be that the 3.5 phone jack is way to loud? Sure it is fun to have enough power to my old HD414 but you would'nt get any EU certificate for the output. I do not have any equipment to measure but lower the output by 24dB would not blast your ears when putting the volume to 100% (and your in-ear either) - ?

What machine? I know that at least 14 and 16 mbps advertise being able to drive high impedance headphones, and there is a chance that macos limits the power based on what is connected and linux doesnt

Hi all - how do i go about accessing my macOS Users folder from asahi? im used to simply mounting /dev/sda or whatever
<j`ey>
Core3294: you can't easily, since Linux doesn't natively support APFS
<j`ey>
Core3294: there are some 3rd party things you can use, but depending on what you need, a FAT partition for sharing would be easier
<Core3294>
ah. yep, im used to mounting other linux filesystems through that method, never tried with apple before. i think Ill just use a thumbdrive for now at least so i dont have to do any more partitioning. thanks!!
<Core3294>

<nicolas17>
j`ey: well you'd also need to make a partition dedicated for such sharing, right?
<nicolas17>
even if Linux had APFS support
<nicolas17>
since the main user-data partition will be encrypted with SEP and that's *also* not supported
