sometimes I'm really happy I have this silent m1 mac mini machine, its sometimes at 100% load for days... and I wouldn't want that to be something loud

chadmed: just a datapoint on "DSP is cheap now": I built my own speaker DSP based on an XMOS device (long story) a few years ago, and with three of their cores (which are pretty cheap) I could handle USB + SPDIF in + full matrix mixer + 6-channel speaker/room correction with 15 independent biquad EQ filters per channel at 96kHz (24bit I/O, 32bit fixed point DSP).
<marcan>
not that I would recommend XMOS but it was a fun project :p
<marcan>
oh yeah also 6ch analog in of course
<marcan>
also correction: iBoot has full multichannel boot chimes, it uses all the speakers, not just the main woofers
<marcan>
also I don't think I ever suggested sniffing around for macOS DSP stuff and putting it into the kernel? IIRC early on what I did suggest was taking impulse responses of whatever DSP macOS was doing and just using them in Linux (in userspace)
<marcan>
i.e. playing back test tones in macOS and sniffing the speaker streams with the hypervisor

<povik>
yeah, i don't think we were ever considering doing anything but grabbing the impulse response of macOS by tracing in hypervisor
<povik>
also how we source the DSP data is orthogonal to whether we apply it in kernel or userspace

<povik>
and the only reason i didn't go ahead with grabbing the responses (yet) is because you beat me to it in constructing an EQ setup anew by ear
<povik>
but that's not necessary in conflict with your telling of the story...
<povik>
*necessarily

<chadmed>
ohhh thats right it was someone else asking why we _couldnt_ do it in the kernel
<chadmed>
also yes ipv6 only, my isp blocks 80 and 443 on ipv4 which is annoying but understandable
<chadmed>
handlerug: its only a typo in freedom burger english, which i do not speak ;)
<psykose>
burger tasty
<ChaosPrincess>
my cable isp is ipv4 only, my telco is ipv4 only, and my vps host is ipv4 only :P
<ChaosPrincess>
so, accessing that wasnt easy
<chadmed>
oh sorry to hear that :(
<ChaosPrincess>
ended up downloading cloudflare warp and using that
<chadmed>
theres an isp in australia like that, and the funniest thing is every time a residential client asks them for ipv6 they immediately close the ticket and say "you dont need it wontfix"
<ChaosPrincess>
oh, i called mine and they said '$5/mo extra', which is not much but still fuck you
<chadmed>
woooow
<j`ey>
can someone pastebin it? my home/vps is also ipv4 only it seems
<chadmed>
thats actually pathetic
<chadmed>
huh i didnt realise this was such a common issue, i thought we as a society had progressed beyond this
<ChaosPrincess>
lol, no
<ChaosPrincess>
unless you are maybe in yankeeland
<j`ey>
I thought my vps had ipv6, but idk how to test
<ChaosPrincess>
europe is kinda behind
<j`ey>
(curl didnt work)
<ChaosPrincess>
j`ey: check if you have ipv6 with ifconfig
<psykose>
europe ran out of cables
<j`ey>
ChaosPrincess: I do
<j`ey>
inet6 fff...
<psykose>
a real address or link-local/localhost
<j`ey>
eth0
<psykose>
that looks fake
<ChaosPrincess>
j`ey: fff sounds like link local
<ChaosPrincess>
real ones start with 2008
<psykose>
lol
<j`ey>
its fe08
<psykose>
yep
<ChaosPrincess>
link local
<psykose>
local
<j`ey>
inet6 fe80::
<j`ey>

okay try that ipv4 friends
<chadmed>
psykose: it was unreachable because i just asked my isp to unblock the ports and they needed to reset the connection
<psykose>
classic
<chadmed>
should be reachable over ipv4 now
<j`ey>
guess it might take some time
<chadmed>
oh yeah... fun thing about gentoo's net.xxx init.d scripts
<chadmed>
they only run on init :P
<chadmed>
ok there we go
