chadmed, alyssa: to be clear, it can probably be improved but it will never sound like an iPhone.
<chadmed>
oh yeah absolutely, ill never get it to sound like the laptops
<marcan>
phone speakers actually have piles of processing behind them (including all the temperature modeling stuff) and are engineered to pack the best audio in the smallest space, it's where all the extreme microspeaker engineering comes from
<chadmed>
but if i can reduce the AM radio effect thatd be nice
<marcan>
the Mini speakers are basically just there for show, it's a cheap random speaker
<marcan>
so yeah, some EQ is probably warranted
<marcan>
but it sounding way worse than an iPhone is expected because it's not an iPhone speaker
<chadmed>
i wasnt expecting much when i got it, but it still somehow disappointed
<chadmed>
honestly i think youre kind of insane if youre using the built in speaker on these things anyway, but having a leg up over macos is always good
<marcan>
(that's from an Intel but I think the M1 one is identical going by less zoomed in photos)
<chadmed>
yeah literally anything is an improvement though, even if its just shoving down ~600-950 by a bunch
<chadmed>
i dont think ill put as much effort into the desktops as i am with the laptops though :p
<chadmed>
no funky multiband compressors or crossovers
<marcan>
and judging by the Mac Studio teardown video, that one's identical too
<marcan>
so yeah, throw some EQ on it and call it a day
<marcan>
and it'll probably work the same for all the displayless desktops
<jannau>
it is? it sounds much better (judging by the boot chime). is that just the bigger case?
raveling has joined #asahi
<marcan>
actually it's not
<marcan>
same general design but the speaker enclosure is a bit larger
<marcan>
might be enough to give it less terrible bass
<chadmed>
at the very least whatever i do to the mids and treble on the minis should still net an improvement on the studio
<marcan>
jannau: also keep in mind the boot chimes are all pre-DSPed for each machine
<chadmed>
id like to get my hands on an imac once theres a codec driver
<marcan>
(they are stored as raw multichannel data going to the amps for iBoot)
<chadmed>
its a clever little trick to maintain the illusion
<jannau>
it's still terrible on the mini
<chadmed>
yeah theres no DSP on the minis at all afaict

if you think of the speaker in the mini as a glorofied PC speaker it sounds great ;)

i was going to make a joke about adding an mt-32 to these things, but i have the mt-32 soundfont installed and have been using passport and town to test the dsp so...
<chadmed>
well we're already there

currently i am configuring sound on m1 air and stumbled upon issue, maybe drivers issue. i've set up pipewire and installed ucm conf from asahi repo. when sound server starts at first, after boot, everything is ok. but when i play something on firefox for example and then stop audio, my headphones start making some pretty loud tearing noise. when it happens (every time i dont play any sound and usually unstoppable) i get this https://pastebin.com/mSynFQV1 in
<zerdox>
my dmesg
<zerdox>
currently i just mute my headphones using wheel on the wire so when i pause video or music i won't hurt my ears. but i would like to get headphones working a bit smoother

zerdox: that's a known issue some people were hitting that we finally got to understand today
<povik>
there should be a fix in a kernel release soon
user982492 has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<povik>
zeromind: putting snd-soc-core.pmdown_time=0 into your kernel bootargs might be a workaround, if you are up for trying things before there's a proper fix
<povik>
oh, sorry, that should be zerdox:

on a technical side note, i am reading the relevant ASoC code that decides whether to do the pmdown deferral
