I want to make an FOSS Allwinner Linux SOM, what would be the most interesting chip to design around? I know the Pine64 guys already built one around the A64
<machinehum>
I know it's a subjective questions, but I'm looking for subjective answers

<Jookia>
the D1 is the most interesting
<Jookia>
to me at least :)
<Jookia>
the T113 too
<machinehum>
Is it mainline yet?
<machinehum>
That I checked there was something strange with it
<Jookia>
slowly
<machinehum>
But there is some sort of non-bsp jank you boot it with?
<machinehum>
That's a cute module I like the USB-C
<Jookia>
not from what i've seen
<Jookia>
yes i have that module
<machinehum>
My question was confusing sorry, can you compile everything to boot it from source?
<Jookia>
yes

<machinehum>
Alright sweet, I tried the V5 a while ago and there was just an image on 3.x kernel and a janky BSP
<machinehum>
How do you like the module?
<machinehum>
oh that's m.2 connector.... smart I recon those are cheap
<machinehum>
2x m.2
<Jookia>
I have the module in a lichee rv panel
<Jookia>
the t113 is the same chip basically but with an ARM chip
<machinehum>
What is allwinner even trying to do with the D1?
<machinehum>
Has CSI lanes
<machinehum>
That's nice
<Jookia>
probably trying to reduce reliance on the west
<machinehum>
But I mean what's the application? Not for tablets

automotive
<machinehum>
Makes sense I guess
<Jookia>
i think the d1 and t113 come in chips that support stacked dram which is super cool
<Jookia>
since it's then just one chip for both

<apritzel>
machinehum: what does "FOSS SoM" mean? Open Source hardware? Or just fully supported in mainline repos?
<apritzel>
machinehum: and what chip to use depends wildly on what you want to do: there is quite some difference between a wimpy T113s (dual A7, or even single RISC-V with the D1s) with just 128MB of embedded DRAM...
<apritzel>
... and an H616 (quad A53) with 4GB LPDDR4 and Mali
<apritzel>
machinehum: if you want to so something cool and new, try to get your hands on this new octa-A55 SoC
<apritzel>
and problem with SoMs are that they are always much more expensive when combined with a carrier board than an integrated board
<apritzel>
which defeats the main purpose of Allwinner SoCs: being cheap. Good example is the Orange Pi Zero 3: small board, 4GB DRAM, HDMI, GBit Ethernet for just 25 USD
