For me on 14" Macbook M2 Pro with Ubuntu 23.04, kernel 6.3 and evdi 1.13.1, I can only use the external display when GDM is set to X11 and "PrimaryGPU" for appledrm is set to false (or commented out).

13:58 <kaazoo> The problem with the X11 approach is that it's either external display or internal display. No both at the same time. There is no fallback to internal display if the external display is not connected. So you always have to enable "PrimaryGPU" again before you can use the laptop standalone.
