Hello everyone; is there already any support for running asahi minimal on m2 pro? I searched on the github (WIP statuses) but wondered if I compiled it myself if it would be possible?
<ChaosPrincess>
m2 pro which machine
<rlvdv>
hello m2 pro macbook pro 2023 16inch (Mac14,10)
<ChaosPrincess>
you would have to compile everything yourself, and if something breaks, you get to keep the pieces
<rlvdv>
ok i compiled m1n1 already and the installer, what do you mean with "get to keep the pieces".
<rlvdv>
just to be sure can i brick my laptop (eg not booting anymore) while doing this?
<ChaosPrincess>
do not expect any support, and if something doesnt work - you will have to solve the problem yourself
<rlvdv>
yes ok, but i wanted to start learning asahi and eventually contribute. However the only thing i want to know if it can possibly brick my laptop? I am fine with restoring from recovery etc
<ChaosPrincess>
depending on how badly you screw up, you might need to use another mac/linux machine to perform a dfu restore. this process wipes all your data
<rlvdv>
ah ok thanks that is what i wanted to know. Thus with another laptop i can recover
<rlvdv>
just as a sidenote is there any eta of asahi for this type of mac? approx?
<ChaosPrincess>
all etas are "as soon as it is finished, and not a minute sooner" :P
* eta
hears that whenever she gets mentioned, the thing she was mentioned for takes longer to do :p

ChaosPrincess, rlvdv: M2 Pro GPU stuff is not validated and it is not known whether you can destroy hardware by getting that wrong.
<ChaosPrincess>
something about the power stuff?
<marcan>
yes
<marcan>
new machine bringup in general is a really bad choice to start with asahi stuff. best work on a machine that is already known to work first, then learn how to do the next one ;)
<ChaosPrincess>
marcan: tbh, my inner cynic thinks that most people will just give up when given the "not ready, deal with it yourself" speech
<marcan>
the problem is the people who won't will need us to handhold them to the point where it'd take less time to just finish it ourselves
<marcan>
we do have a bus factor problem here though
<marcan>
I was lazy about this round of machines at first and nobody properly picked up the baton (of the usual crowd) which is mildly concerning
<marcan>
also lina is the only one who knows how to do GPU bringup, though at least that is documented on youtube
<ChaosPrincess>
isnt that mostly due to usual crowd having m1 hardware already and not being interested to upgrading directly to the next gen
<marcan>
nah, we had some attempts from people with actual hardware but it kind of stalled
<marcan>
the way to fix this is probably for me to get people who are already experienced with the platform involved in that bringup stuff; having someone new start from there I think is a bit too steep a hill to climb :/
<marcan>
I mean things like properly filling out the pmgr device tree stuff, debugging bringup issues, etc
<marcan>
anyway, bbl, just idle thoughts :)
<nsklaus>
m2pro laptop need wifi and bluetooth
<nsklaus>
is it expected bringing support for these to be any difficult ?
<nsklaus>
compared to previous wifi and bluetooth on other model i mean

well the tracing infrastructure is there in m1n1 and its not like you have to write a whole new driver
