<ydalton> why are asahi kernel builds still being built for x86_64? that makes zero sense to me. for example, this build failed because the x86_64 builds failed https://copr.fedorainfracloud.org/coprs/g/asahi/kernel/build/6514090/

<sunny> i wonder why the new fedora release has more problems and breakage than archlinux ever had :-(
<sunny> maybe archlinux would still be the better choice?
<j`ey> that breakage was on f39, which isn't released yet
<j`ey> I mean, the fedora asahi remix isn't released yet either, "officially"
<j`ey> also I think apart from those two grub issues, what else has been broken?
Luj has quit [Quit: The Lounge - https://thelounge.chat]
Luj has joined #asahi
<chadmed> grub broke on ALARM
<chadmed> and it was worse because oldmate upstream couldnt be arsed fixing it in a timely manner
<j`ey> also i think qemu is messed up, they broke chromium for a bit because pcre-regex didnt get rebuilt etc
ydalton has joined #asahi
<ydalton> sunny: you kidding me? they had Xorg break because a manjaro arm dev "helpfully" enabled a build option in mesa
<chadmed> the fact that this was caught and then rolled back/fixed in four hours is proof that moving to fedora was the right choice lol
<sunny> did you not use wayland?
HardWall has quit [Quit: This computer has gone to sleep]
<chadmed> if this was caught on ALARM we would have had to vendor grub and then pester the literally ONE guy maintaining ALARM to do something about it for a month
<sunny> chadmed: yeah well, but still it got rolled out and the people which decided so still did not test correctly
<chadmed> such is rolling release on non-x86 architectures
<ydalton> i didn't use asahi linux at the time, but if you used KDE, their login manager SDDM is Xorg, which means if you installed the edge kernel without mesa asahi edge, Xorg would crap itself
<chadmed> a four hour turnaround is about as good as you can hope for
<sunny> and i mean that is like the 3rd or 4th time already, with arch it was way less, wasnt it?
<j`ey> sunny: 2nd
<j`ey> and like I said, it wasn't even on the current Fedora version
<chadmed> a package broke in the unstable beta version of the unstable beta version of the upstream
<chadmed> more at 11
<ydalton> i mean, it is sad there's like one guy maintaining arch linux arm
<chadmed> its sadder that upstream have no interest in supporting arm which is the real problem
jeisom has joined #asahi
<ydalton> like i get not wanting to support i686, fine, but arm is still a thing being used
<chadmed> x86-s is too little too late and arm64 is here to stay for consumer devices. distros which dont make an effort to support it properly will go the way of the dodo/slackware
<ydalton> then again, i don't think arch linux has good management anyways
<ydalton> their official news channel hardly gets any updates whatsoever
<ydalton> you're better off following the subreddit rather than their website lol
<slp> ydalton: I haven't tried wine, nor practically anything other than Xonotic and some Steam games (and a couple from itch.io). I'm focusing on enabling DRM native context for GPU acceleration, the rest can come later ;-)
<ydalton> slp: alright, no problem!
<sunny> slp: i did not try yet, but i thought you already succeded with gpu acceleration native context? does not everything work yet?
<ydalton> there's probably a few kinks that need to be worked out
<slp> sunny: it works, but still needs some polishing to be ready for upstream. It's getting really close, though.

<cozydeer_> hi everyone :) typing from a 2020 M1 Macbook Pro I i installed the Fedora minimal spin, and from there installed MATE desktop with LightDM. I'm having a minorly annoying issue where on bootup it boots into terminal and I have to startx and then systemctl start lighdm.service instead of these happening automatically on bootup
<eiln> yes I know but it should have been in the tarball
<cozydeer_> i'm not particularly experience with editing .xinitrc file, it currently only has "exec ck-launch-session mate-session"
<j`ey> cozydeer_: systemctl enable lightdm
<j`ey> cozydeer_: also what does: `systemctl get-default` return?
<cozydeer_> i have actually used the enable command but it doesn't stick for some reason
<cozydeer_> it returns "multi-user.target"

<ydalton> could it be the file changed from ventura to sonoma?
<kidplayer666> Can confirm
<kidplayer666> And I am on Sonoma
<kidplayer666> Although I installed Asahi (Fedora) before updating to Sonoma
<ydalton> same
<janneg> ydalton: you probably have to run asahi-fwupdate, check if there 3 to 6 isp_* files in /lib/firmware/vendor/apple/
<janneg> it should run automatically on updates but doesn't for some reasons
<janneg> if the files are missing, run `sudo asahi-fwupdate` and reboot
<ydalton> perhaps, but i already fixed the issue
<ydalton> kidplayer666: could you try this out?
<eiln> the calibration command has no knowledge of the blob being sent. it's failing because of the 32-bit addresses on <13.5, nothing to do with sonoma.
<kidplayer666> Just ran sudo asahi-fwupdate
<kidplayer666> Bout to reboot
<janneg> on M1 and M1 Pro/Max devices that will break the camera but a fixed kernel is already being built
cozydeer has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<kidplayer666> You could have told me that
<kidplayer666> Before I did asahi-fwupdate
<kidplayer666> lol
<kidplayer666> And is it literally the one already being built in Fedora servers?

<janneg> you can delete the isp_* files from /lib/firmware/vendor/apple/ (they are loaded on each boot) and have a crappy camera image. will be fixed by the currently building kernel.

<ayke> I have a really strange issue. I've upgraded to Sonoma and the first boot worked, but for the second I set Asahi Linux as the default OS to boot and since then both m1n1 and the boot picker don't show any screen output anymore. The screen just stays black.
nela has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
nela5 is now known as nela
<ayke> Specifically, when I boot normally now, the Apple logo is on screen for about 2 seconds, disappears (screen goes black) and the next thing I see is a kernel message (less than a second) before I see my normal login screen on Asahi Linux.
<ayke> When I press and hold the power button to get the boot picker, it says "loading startup options" for a bit and then the screen goes black again. I get out of it by holding down the power button for a few seconds (presumably a forced poweroff).
<ayke> brb, checking whether I didn't mess up brightness or something
jeisom has joined #asahi
<ayke> nope, didn't seem to help (tried increasing brightness under Linux and pressing the brightness up keys)
<ayke> My best guess (even if unlikely) is that something is broken in the firmware so the bootloader doesn't set up DCP properly. But once Linux configures DCP (I'm on the edge kernel) the screen starts working again.
