PaulFertser: where is the system info most useful? It's a 15" M2 Air, definitely does not run for 30 hours with SSH in bg, although I am getting a decent ~8

I'm waking up in 8 hours, I'll unplug and make a note of what it drops to

also got speakers working on my j413, sounds great after enabling DSP! I was testing with deadmau5 - Strobe (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tKi9Z-f6qX4) and I hear some small distortions at the beginning at high volumes (>75%) but the loud parts sound great. I guess this is normal and might be a limitation of the speakers?

also saw a speakersafetyd crash
<iaguis>
Oct 26 10:47:53 locke-m2 speakersafetyd[577]: thread 'main' panicked at 'Right Tweeter: Coil temperature limit exceeded (140.0015949984495 > 140)', src/types.rs:321:17
<iaguis>
and volume got turned down as expected :)
<chadmed>
j413? there is no dsp for that
<chadmed>
do not try to use the dsp for a different machine
<chadmed>
stop now
<leio>
iaguis: ^^
<leio>
(hope he won't say the ping blew his speakers)
<iaguis>
sorry, will stop
<iaguis>
(no speakers blown)
<marcan>
*facepalm*
<marcan>
yeah maybe we should switch to private repos/branches
<j`ey>
:'((
<j`ey>
(or at least add me to them all so I can still follow along :D)

<zzlld>
haha, it seems people are *really* thirsty for speakers
ten15723774324 has joined #asahi
<sven>
not just that, same thing happened when i still had public tbt or dpext branches except that i also got support requests via email or /msg :/
<PaulFertser>
Private support requests are obviously inappropriate but probably easy to ignore? What's wrong without people discussing wip code on public channels without annoying the devs directly though?
amw has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<zzlld>
i am extremly thirsty for speakers as well
<zzlld>
but if the devs say dont tinker with that, its not ready yet, you will break your system, i wont try to do it and think i am more clever than the devs
<zzlld>
i like to read commit logs and stuff though, so private branches would be worse for me, but i can totally understand that devs dont want people to spread "asahi breaks my expensive macbook" just because they cant read or wait
<zzlld>
i mean marcan wrote like 100 times "dont use expert mode if you not really are a expert or asahi dev", and like 1/3 of posts of reddit start like "i used expert mode because i think highly of me and of course i am a real expert"
<lena6>
the problem isn't even the user tinkering on their own systems, but telling others to do it
capta1nt0ad has joined #asahi
<lena6>
think of like user 1: "hmm i'd like to get speakers to work because i really need it for xyz" user 2: "oh i know how to do it, just build this branch etc etc you just have to be careful with volume" and then user 1 blows them up because they got too comfortable with it
<PaulFertser>
So what? Their own fault. People have been blowing the speakers for years on all kinds of equipment.
<lena6>
having worked in "big" OSS projects, ignoring the people who are just careless, the amount of people who mean well but end up destroying everything for themselves or others is very high
<lena6>
well, if there's a way to prevent all those users blowing up their speakers, then i don't see why not
<lena6>
kinda of like expert mode
<PaulFertser>
Having the code in private branches gets other developers discouraged and not feeling inspired.
<lena6>
if you put a big button saying "completely wipe the critical SPI flash, there's someone who will do it"
<PaulFertser>
Having sections in published DTs commented out feels reasonable. Hiding the code "till it's safe for everybody" feels uncool.
<sven>
PaulFertser: https://marcan.st/2011/01/safe-hacking/ that's more or less the philosophy for projects marcan and me have been working on, we don't want to be in any way responsible for breaking people's hardware
<sven>
and yeah, i don't like hiding code as well but i also hate getting annoying emails or messages
<PaulFertser>
sven: I've read that; to be honest, my impression was that I'm missing some real life examples there to get me convinced.
<sven>
*shrug*
<sven>
no need to convince you, that's how we do things
<PaulFertser>
You know the story, you've been there, naturally you're aligned with the results. But for an outsider it looks kinda unfounded. Doesn't mean it's wrong but without the context that you're aware of it's missing the point. Probably I'm an outlier here, and the others see it differently.
<sven>
imho there's no right or wrong here. it's just a way of doing things that i'm comfortable with

capta1nt0ad has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]

And you are doing great so probably that's indeed the right way in the end...
marvin24_ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<PaulFertser>
BTW, are speakers really expensive or unabtainable or hard to replace?
<iaguis>
fwiw I'd have never pinged you expecting support, I was aware that I could blow up my speakers (I had to type that when enabling them :) and of course I'd never give instructions to others on how to do it
<iaguis>
I saw the open conversation about speakers before and got carried away, so sorry about that
<iaguis>
I do understand how annoying it must be for users to ping you about wip code (I'm an opensÃ-source developer as well) so I totally get the policy

I guess the timescales and effect are different as well. Usually developing something that works to some extent doesn't take months, so you don't even consider a private work branch that isn't backed up to public server yet or a PR filed as a private branch in this sense - while here it's stuff that's being (reverse) engineered and made to work in multiple months of effort, whereas it's also touching hardware that may damage it. Your typical software work can't
<leio>
really end up in tangible material loss (besides time and such)
<marcan>
PaulFertser: on some/many machines speaker replacement == full top case replacement == $$$$
<marcan>
that's what they quoted me on the M2MBA (except I got it replaced for free with AppleCare)
<marcan>
but conversely we do *not* want "Asahi blows speakers up and people go to apple for free replacements" to become a theme here
<marcan>
because that's how Apple decides to start voiding warranties if you use Asahi

Shouldn't the kernel pause all processes (i.e. give them no cpu time) while in suspend?
<Nefsen402>
It would be a good find to see an application that does something really weird that makes the kernel suck back power even though it shouldn't be executing anything
