<real_felix> After refreshing the page every other day for months, I just found out that the Macbook Pro 2023 is supported. I AM SO EXCITED RIGHT NOW
<real_felix> Does it mean that I can install Fedora?
<j`ey> real_felix: yup!
<real_felix> I was fed up with the mac desktop. Everyone keep talking about how it's ergonomic and stuff, but GNOME is better IMHO.

<ydalton> kidplayer666: gnome builder is for gnome applications
<leio> sure, it concentrates on that, but...
<ar> isn't the "lack of community edition for arm" in pycharm just a matter of using a different jvm than the one included?
<leio> that was the case for me today for android-studio as well (which builds on top of JetBrains stuff afaik, though had android SDK trouble there afterwards), and another JetBrains IDE worked fine-ish on my previous gentoo install on mac (haven't gotten to that again yet)
<leio> in case of android-studio, its launch script specifically checks the included java environments `release` text file, which includes the architecture and then doesn't use it if unsuitable and falls back to other tries of finding java, including system installed one; so I just installed a system JRE and it launched
<ydalton> there is a linux arm64 tarball for pycharm

<bluetail> Tramtrist yea. But experience may deviate on what window manager you use
<bluetail> KDE for instance has a couple of long-standing issues. E.g create a widget with sliders - and you will enter edit mode after a long-click - aka when you change the slider. It's quite annoying.

<Tramtrist> anyone running asahi have advice on a tool to sync icloud/photos ?
<felixXx> Hello, I'm typing from Fedora on my M2 Pro :) I have a small question regarding the screen: it stops at the bezel, and so I miss a hundreds pixels at the top. How come?
<j`ey> felixXx: you have a notch right?
<felixXx> Yes that's right. I'm talking about the notch
<felixXx> Normally, I can use the space "around" the notch
<j`ey> current software on linux doesnt really know about it, so it's disabled by default
<felixXx> I'm not sure to understand: does it mean I can enable it somehow?
<j`ey> you can
<j`ey> if you put apple_dcp.show_notch=1 on the kernel command line
<j`ey> but windopws wont know about it
<j`ey> so may show stuff behind it
<felixXx> Wow, super nice, thanks a lot
<felixXx> Yeah, no problem, I can configure GNOME with extension to move the clock around
<felixXx> Now I need to read about how to setup the kernel. Is there a good source to read the doc?
<cy8aer> Yes I use JustPerfection for this because with this I am able to thicken the tool bar too.
<felixXx> Asahi doesn't use GRUB, does it?
<cy8aer> It should

<cy8aer> yes and update the grub configuration. Just a moment
<janneg> fedora uses bls spec files in /boot/loader/entries, grubby is used as management command

<eldondev> Are there prebuilt versions of asahi-nvram/asahi-bless ? This is pretty much exactly what I'm interested in: https://old.reddit.com/r/AsahiLinux/comments/158t7j2/selecting_boot_volumewriting_to_nvram_from_linux/
<felixXx> It feels that it's experimental, though, it's bugges af. I don't have virtual desktops, for example
<felixXx> And pinned apps aren't displayed in the "view mode" (not sure how it's called in GNOME)
<felixXx> And maximized windows go under the panel
<j`ey> by under the panel, do you mean under the notch?
<j`ey> eldondev: fedora has them
<eldondev> Ok, thanks, sounds like I just need to switch to fedora. Is it possible to have multiple asahi's installed simultaneously, or do I need to wipe my current asahi?
<j`ey> you can have multiple installs
<eldondev> Ok, I will just reboot to macos and try the fedora version of the curlsh
<felixXx> j`ey No, I mean literally under the panel. The windows maximize as if there is no panel. The panel hides the top of the windows
IknoweD has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<j`ey> im not sure what panel means here
<janneg> they won't work on fedora atm since 13.5 uses a different nvram format

<j`ey> eldondev: ^
<eldondev> Ah, ok, so don't do that.
<felixXx> j`ey The GNOME panel, which displays the clock, the wifi info, etc
<eldondev> My macos version is a little older, too.
<j`ey> felixXx: ah ok, probably a gnome bug?
<felixXx> I assume so, but it's quite a big bug, so I assume it only exist on asahi fedora for some reason
<j`ey> felixXx: guess you couls check its not related to the notch
<felixXx> No, it was the same before enabling the notch
<felixXx> And there are other bugs, so
<j`ey> felixXx: did yoy test gnome 45 on other platforms?
<eldondev> janneg: My macos version is 13.0.1, I just installed asahi yesterday using the normal arch curl (not the fedora curl). Do you think I can do headless switching in that scenario with bless and asahi-bless (assuming I get asahi-bless installed somehow?)
<eldondev> My ultimate goal is to mostly use virtual machines for the actual work I am doing,
<felixXx> j`ey No, my Linux laptop is on 44 because the new Fedora hasn't been released yet. But GNOME 45 is supposed to be prod ready
<eldondev> but I understand macos is really best virtualized on macos.
<felixXx> Maybe the next upgrade will fix that
<j`ey> felixXx: I see, hard to tell if its asahi related then
<felixXx> Anyway, thanks again for the help, I'll configure everything so that I can use it for work on Monday :)
vLily has joined #asahi
<janneg> eldondev: that means you have installed with 12.3 or 12.4 as stub and nvram should be in the old supported format
<eldondev> janneg: so if I install fedora from this macos install, I should be able to install the packaged asahi-bless and switch between fedora and macos headlessly?
mps has joined #asahi
<eldondev> Oh, never mind, looks like fedora requires a recent macos, so I will just build asahi-bless for the arch version.

<j`ey> is that the f3 key alone, without the fn key?
<Nefsen402> yes
<Nefsen402> I found it using the utility wev
<Nefsen402> Does the fedora remix use grub so I can add boot params?
<j`ey> it does
<j`ey> it has some patches to use this BLS thing
<j`ey> check /boot/loader/entries/*.conf
<j`ey> there's also /etc/sysconfig/kernel thas params that are picked by default
<Nefsen402> I want to enable the notch and patch sway to not use it for fs applications and have waybar take up the space otherwise
<Nefsen402> I'll share patches once those are ready
<j`ey> you mean have full screen only extend up to the notch? and then when non-full screen the bar can take up that space?
<Nefsen402> yep

<Nefsen402> hmm, headphones don't work on m2 max even though it should it should be working
<leio> janneg: I finally got around to trying m1n1-1.4.2 without being on the wrong branch. If I enable both rtkit_syslog and src/afk.c debug, then it boots fine. If I do only src/afk.c debug, then it also boots fine. But RTKIT_SYSLOG alone doesn't boot: https://bpa.st/I2GA
<leio> and I see I've got a 1.4.3 to try
<leio> that seems to just work fine in stage2
<leio> janneg: do we need commit 50ac69eaa56d0272216 still with this now?
<janneg> I think so, iirc it fixed a different issue
<janneg> and yes, use 1.4.3
AnuthaDev has joined #asahi
<leio> janneg: yeah, I'm getting more of the IOP spam on screen with that delay reverted and then when it boots my system, the gdm-wayland crashes (gnome-shell crash) and when I restart gdm after, it comes up at smaller resolution or something. Might be some other weirdness going on there too, though

<Nefsen402> I cooked up some patches to make sway respect screen notches. https://github.com/Nefsen402/sway/tree/output-margins. Simply add "output eDP-1 margins 32 0 0 0" to your config and fullscreen apps will black out the top
<Nefsen402> I talked to upstream a few months ago about this and upstream would prefer a kernel interface to get the info automatically
