but like I havn't really used fedora and I can't help people install things that I can't use

also that guy I'm going to help should have some basic linux knowledge already so maybe arch wouldn't be too hard for him/her/them
<pitust>
fedora is also a lot less broken than alarm
<pitust>
(which isn't saying much)
<j`ey>
weitcis: fair, they can always get help online from us too, but whatever suits you best!
<weitcis>
thanks, I think maybe I will ask them to make the decision
<weitcis>
btw why would you say fedora is less broken
<weitcis>
just curious

@all Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this. Running Fedora 39 at the moment. Videos will not play in FF i.e. YT or news etc. Gets as far as displaying the "Play" arrow then nothing. I can scroll throught the video and it shows me mini-previews. All codecs are on board, as far as I know. In Fedora 38, videos worked.
<ChaosPrincess>
you probably do not actually have the codecs. try installing openh264, ffmpeg or something like that.
<u154s>
@all I installed chromium in Fedora 39 to do a comparison, same result as in FF. Scratches head. Any tips appreciated. Codecs are there.

Hi, I am interested in using asahi a bit like a server, but also periodically leveraging macOS a bit like a server,
<eldondev>
Some systems have the concept of "boot this other system only the next time", I was wondering if it would be possible to do that with asahi and macOS, where I can ssh into asahi and reboot into macOS, or vice versa.
<j`ey>
the asahi-bless tool can do that from the linux side
<j`ey>
and bless from the macOS
<eldondev>
Great, thanks, I will look into that.
<ydalton>
isn't the asahi-bless tool potentially dangerous? i recall ChaosPrincess said it could land you in DFU land
<ChaosPrincess>
that applies more to asahi-nvram, and there is also a bit of CYA from me

For the reference, vanilla brcmfmac on raspberrypi and other SBCs using same SDIO module works as a client with WPA3 Personal provided: 1. Firmware from git.kernel.org is used; 2. iwd (not wpa_supplicant) is used.
<ar>
I've also had more luck with wpa3 using iwd on different NICs
hanetzer1 has joined #asahi

ello. quickish question. the asmedia pci xhci on asahi devices; where could one obtain a copy of that firmware for examination purposes?
<j`ey>
buy a mac :P
<hanetzer1>
never :P
<hanetzer1>
reason being. I'm doing coreboot on a desktop ryzen board. lot of things work.
<PaulFertser>
ar: it's not about luck in this case, it's because iwd implemented some nl80211 feature while wpa_supplicant didn't. It's only used by brcmfmac and no other upstream drivers iirc.
<hanetzer1>
a few do not. and, it seems the firmware for the x370 chipset is quite similar to asmedia stuff, so I'd like to compare binaries.
<PaulFertser>
And apparently some popular distros used on raspberrypi are shipping brcmfmac firmwares that just do not have sae enabled at all, so there it doesn't work no matter what.
<j`ey>
hm, maybe you can just download the macOS ipsw and get it from there, hanetzer1
<j`ey>
its inside the kerne;
<austriancoder>
Has anybody full disc encryption working on asahi fedora and wants to share an how-to?

but yeh. I haven't tested *every* chipset related function as boot times are quite whack atm, but, the pcie devices on it I've tried work and so does the nvme. its just the usb ports on the chipset and the nvme coming off the cpu that currently do not work :)

regarding camera sleep: we essentially have do the entire camera on/off dance on sleep/resume to save maximum power while seamlessly restoring context (i.e. the camera should be back on at resume). due to its complexity the camera on/off dance takes relatively long, about 0.5s each. iff you went to sleep with the camera on, and you resume way too fast (<1s), you might get a hang
<eiln>
because there wasn't enough time to fully sleep/wake. in that case, pressing the power button (lightly) once works.
