Hi guys, I want to work on my Asahi Fedora, but I need to have meetings, and the sound over bluetooth is very bad. Every 10s or so, the sound is hashed and crappy. Is that a known issue? Can I do something about this?
<felixXx>
Never mind, I changed to codec to SBC, and it works great. I'm so happy to be able to use Linux on such a great hardware <3
<felixXx>
I've watched a full YT video, and it worked well (WiFi + BT). In the sound settings, the codec by default is AAC, and I had to change it to SBC
<j`ey>
another thing to look out for is 2.4GHz connections and BT can interfere
<j`ey>
*2.4GHz wifi
<felixXx>
No clue how to change that, I guess it's on my router?
<j`ey>
running `iwconfg` shows if youre using it already
<felixXx>
It's displayed in the wifi info in gnome settings: 2.4GHz. I don't feel like battling with the router rn, but I'll keep in mind that it ought to be 5
<felixXx>
LMAO, I just saw that my router provides automatically 2 networks: one in 2.4GHz, one in 5GHz. I have nothing to do, I just have to connect to the desired frequency. Not sure how common it is.
<j`ey>
mine picked 5ghz by default (using nmcli)
unrobot has joined #asahi
<leio>
it's common, but it's problematic (to your wifi performance and whatnot, not regarding asahi) as the routers might switch to 2.4GHz mode when someone nearby simply does a SSID scan and interrupt your usage a bit or something. Network folks usually expose 2.4GHz and 5GHz as separate SSIDs or disable 2.4GHz altogether if not needed by any device
<unrobot>
pardon my stupid, but how do I read the status of hdmi over usb-c with a dongle thing on the hardware support page? HDMI support for m1 airbook is marked '-' on the page, which makes sense the m1 airbook doesn't have an HDMI port, but how can I tell if it'll work through the dongle?
<leio>
actually you kind of said two networks already, but if it's the same SSID name, it's still not in your clients control easily which one you use
<MichaelLong>
separating 2.4GHz and 5GHz WiFi networks is a bad practice and generally should be avoided
<leio>
ok, just forget what I said then (I stand by it, but guess it's offtopic here)
<ChaosPri1>
unrobot: true hdmi dongles do not exist, all of those are displayport alt mode dongles with a dp to hdmi converter. so, just look at the "DP Alt Mode" cell (its wip)

there is / was HDMI USB-C altmode but that is dead and not supported on apple silicon devices. I suspect most usb-c <-> hdmi adapters are based on dp-altmode and a dp-2-hdmi converter
zerdox has quit [Quit: Quit]
<ChaosPrincess>
hdmi altmode exists only as standard, there is basically no hardware that supports it

btw, would any such dongle be able to theoretically give me secondary external display out of 2023 M2 Mac Studio without thunderbolt support?
<leio>
that's the "slow graphics card inside USB" stuff, right?
<leio>
and I guess that's a no for making use of some kind of altmode until there's no bolt
<ChaosPrincess>
Dp altmode and thunderbolt are orthogonal
<leio>
regarding DisplayLink, if it is what I assume, I don't think I'm very interested in that, but I'm also concerned my USB wouldn't take it, as I even have problem getting an android phone recognized from some ports
<leio>
some power domain and delivery issues, it feels like
felixXx has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ar>
having used displayink usb adapters in the past, the experience was poor, even on windows.
<leio>
so Dp altmode is something I could get out of the USB-C/thunderbolt ports from Mac Studio in theory?

yes
<sven>
it requires atcphy and dcpext
<sven>
and I haven’t had much motivation lately to work that unfortunately
<leio>
I selflessly don't mind if you work on bolt instead, lol; but if no-one is working on it, I don't exclude the possibility of trying to poke at it
<sven>
tbt is unfortunately included in that “not much motivation”
<sven>
but I’ll get back to it eventually
<leio>
(trying to poke at atcphy and dcpext, not bolt)

hello guys, i'm looking for a distro for my macbook pro 2020, it's an intel, i was wondering if you can help me. damn touchbar is driving me crazy. on the other side my old macbook pro late 2013 becomes a grill with linux and it's 10 years i'm trying to find a solution, so only on 2020 can be a chance, any ideas?
<sadUser>
thx a lot in advance
<janneg>
sadUser: not really, I'd start looking at https://wiki.t2linux.org/ . I think someone related to that started looking into using the daemon (tiny-dfr) for intel macbooks as well

Fair
<kidplayer666>
What are you working on if I might ask?
<ChaosPrincess>
kb backlight (complete), touchbar (mostly complete, waiting on full fedora release and going to start upstreaming, and probably add user requests to the daemon), video encoder (every time i look at it i keep wondering if i was only pretending to not be dumb for my entire life and it is catching up with me)
<kidplayer666>
Oh, great job!
<kidplayer666>
I gotta say
<kidplayer666>
Kb is better than whatever apple is doing in my install
<kidplayer666>
where it sometimes doesn't work
<kidplayer666>
only after a reboot
<kidplayer666>
and touchbar, I love it
<kidplayer666>
But there's a bug that you may not know
<kidplayer666>
Chaos Princess:
<kidplayer666>
During shutdown
<kidplayer666>
The touchbar sort of tries to copy the animation of the fedora logo
<kidplayer666>
And has a wierd animation on it
<kidplayer666>
It does not happen if clean boot is disabled
<ChaosPrincess>
psychic debugging says plymouth is trying to draw the shutdown logo on all screens, and touchbar is just a screen

I think kwin/plasma does
<janneg>
I'm still astounded that plymouth doesn't grab the touchbar display on startup and causes problems

something tells me its a race and the fact that plymouth loses is just us getting lucky
<felixdv>
Hello, I fucked up my GNOME installation, what can I do? Can I reinstall Fedora Asahi while keeping my home?
<felixdv>
I wish I could chroot and reinstall GNOME, but I think that's not possible from MacOS
<j`ey>
you can boot into the multi-user.target with systemd
<j`ey>
if you wait until u-boot's countdown finishes, then press esc, it will get you into grub
<j`ey>
then press 'e' to edit, add '3' to the kernel command line
<felixdv>
And then I could boot without trying to load GDM you mean?
<j`ey>
yup, adding '3' makes that happen
<felixdv>
I think I won't be able to fix the system like that, I need a connection, and I only have it with WiFi
<j`ey>
wifi should connect
<felixdv>
Do you know if I can reinstal the system while keeping /home?
<felixdv>
Oh, really? I'll try that tomorrow
<j`ey>
assuming that GNOME settings setup NetworkManager
<felixdv>
Yes
<j`ey>
if not it's pretty easy to use nmcli
<j`ey>
but no, afaik, no way to keep home
<felixdv>
But I corrupted a GNOME shared object :3
<felixdv>
So I hope I still can use nm
<felixdv>
Anyway, thanks for the help, I'll try what you said tomorrow
<j`ey>
how did you do that?
<felixdv>
I just wanted to edit a .so file to change a constant (I changed a number related to touchpad gesture) and for some reason, after GDM tries to boot, the screen goes black.
<j`ey>
oh lol
<j`ey>
there must be a better way to do that
<felixdv>
I'm not sure what caused that. Pretty sure I just edited 3 -> 4
<felixdv>
Either I messed up with the permissions while moving the file around, or there is a checksum
<felixdv>
IDK
<felixdv>
Yeah, that was stupid
