<clamky> when 6.9.9-403.asahi.fc39.aarch64+16k on a mac mini m1 suspends to ram - mini continues to consume almost ~5W off of the wall plug (normally this mini idles at ~6W), power consumption, when mac os on the same hardware is sent to bed, hovers at around 1W. is there something that can be done to make suspended asahi less power hungry?

<PaulFertser> clamky: are you reallly suspending to RAM and not just "s2idle"?
jelly has joined #asahi
<chadmed> aiui not without PSCI
<clamky> PaulFertser: i don't know, i just do the 'systemctl suspend'
<PaulFertser> clamky: check your dmesg then, it should show which kind of suspend it really is.
<clamky> PaulFertser: i do see s2idle in dmesg output

<clamky> PaulFertser: fwiw writing meme to /sys/power/state, has the same effect - mini consumes 5W

<chadmed> the issue is not s2idle vs s2ram, the issue is that we cannot shut off/halt the secondary cpus and their clusters and then bring them back up without PSCI. this platform does not let us call into psci from the EL we need to be able to do so from, so until we figure out a way forward there (that is acceptable to linux upstream) then we can't do much about it
<chadmed> maybe m1n1 can leave behind some code in a carveout that pretends to be psci and forwards standard psci calls from linux to the hardware but idk
<chadmed> power management is tricky
<j`ey> chadmed: I prototyped that carveout solution
<chadmed> :o

<j`ey> got it working, with a bunch of hacks
<chadmed> how does that work from linux? do we just put the paddr of the left behind code for each supported psci call in the dt node?
<j`ey> I did it as an EFI service
<chadmed> oh that was my first thought but given it was _my_ first thought i considered it too silly to bother bringing up :p
<chadmed> but if it works it works at this point
<PaulFertser> chadmed: my point was that clamky reported using s2ram while in fact it always was actually s2idle. I know Asahi doesn't support s2ram yet.
<j`ey> still required patching linux to do PSCI via EFI
<clamky> guess the answer to my question is - no, at least for mere mortals, thanks

<alih> So generally I'm finding Asahi to be really cool but I find that equivalent software takes more RAM than it does with its x86_64 counterparts. To counteract this I tried Sway which works works really great but I miss certain KDE Plasma features... so are there tips on how to make KDE use less RAM so I get fewer purple flickers in Firefox and such?
<PaulFertser> How do you measure the RAM taken?
<alih> plasma monitor, htop, zramctl, and such
<PaulFertser> And which parameter for which process are you looking at?
<alih> mostly i'm looking at Mem/Swp in Htop, and per process I'm looking at RES and SHR
<alih> lots of memory is shared, but lots more is not
<PaulFertser> But overall Mem/Swp doesn't show anything important because all free RAM can be taken to cache accesses to storage anyway.
<nickchan> alih: some of the memory is used by the GPU
<alih> I understand, as it's shared on the apple arm architecture. I just wanted to know if there were ways to make KDE take less so that I could have a similar feeling of stretching out my multitasking capabilities as I do with Sway, but I realize this is probably not the right place to ask about KDE specific questions
<PaulFertser> I think you can start with showing which process exactly consumes considerably more compared to about the same version running on amd64.
