janrinze: update on displaylink. I can't seem to get it working. when you got it working, was it on fedora? what guide did you follow?
<quaff>
janrinze: I see what you mean by lag. it's not... smooth. especially while moving windows around. but honestly, for my purposes, coding, this is fine!

Hello! I recently got an M1 air with fedora asahi on it, I read some (old) posts that there was a bug that could break the speakers if they were used? Im on GNOME if that somehow matters.
<Seti_>
I think I read something on the asahi site that seemed to mention it but it didnt seem like it gave a clear answer

I think you can still break the speakers with macOS if you let it play "I won the loudness war" for long enough though?
verlio has joined #asahi
<PaulFertser>
Or do I misremember and macOS is safe on all models with all possible inputs?
<ar>
not sure if they fixed it or not, but for a surprisingly long time that was indeed true

Seti_ depending on when this was installed, you might want to update or reinstall
<fl0_id>
from what I hear
<fl0_id>
(like because some early installations did things differently)

fl0_id: do you mean Asahi Linux ever shipped with code dangerous for the speakers? I seem to remember there was a related bug but even that was not really dangerous (unless one was doing specific kind of stress-testing). Can't remember more and the relevant fediverse content is still not searchable...

<PaulFertser>
IIRC at no point in time there was a possibility to run with speakersafetyd not doing its job. The interlocking mechanism in the kernel was ensuring the speakers get no sound unless the daemon is running and working.
<fl0_id>
PaulFertser I don't mean because of the speakers specifically, but I've often seen advice that very early installs were done in a different manner and cannot be fully upgraded (afaik) to the same state. That's why I said if they "just got it" and it was an older install it might potentially be good to update or reinstall. but if everything works or it is even a newer install, then it should be fine I think.
<cy8aer>
1.0.20 and up are safe
<PaulFertser>
cy8aer: ah yes, those artifacts. But they are short in duration and anyway with speakersafetyd no artifacts should be able to damage anything, right?
<cy8aer>
no. speakersafetyd does not make problems.
<PaulFertser>
fl0_id: not sure what you mean. Older installs that didn't extract the webcam firmware? But you can install and copy it later manually I guess?
<fl0_id>
PaulFertser I don't know the details, I just repeated what I read here. would have to check logs to dig it up...
<PaulFertser>
cy8aer: my point is that no matter how bad the bugs in the DSP might be and no matter how loud the artifacts might get generated it should still be safe thanks to speakersafetyd which was extensively tested.
<fl0_id>
but anyway, probably not important or I don't know enough
