freeing as much space as possible on macOS will let you leave more space for Linux during installation

chadmed: How many hw planes does apple have? Intel has them by the butt loads but amdgpu only has one and it has to be shared across outputs
<Nefsen402>
(for desktop cards - I think integrated solutions have more)
<chadmed>
Nefsen402: DCP technically has 4 planes but can only actively blend two of them
<Nefsen402>
not too shabby

<chaos_princess>
instead of having one framebuffer, and running the gpu to composite the final image, you get multiple semi-transparent layers that are composited by the display output circuitry
<chaos_princess>
in $current_year, this is purely a power usage optimization, that allows you to not power up the gpu for things like cursor movement, or video playback

tsujp if you want to use the underlying libkrun library, podman uses it on macOS to provide some extra capability like gpu access for the container

hey everybody, what's the correct channel to ask for some guidance? I'm trying to get Assetto Corsa to work on asahi on an m1 macbook pro and I'm hitting a few walls (primarily related to wine not being available for aarch64 or me not knowing how to find it/install it)

saw a popup about some connection issue and it just shut down the client, and reconnecting wasn't immediate 😅️
<PaulFertser>
bashiordache: also do you mean you want to run an x86 windows game?
<bashiordache>
I believe it's x64, still lookin online for confermation
<bashiordache>
that blog post made me try asahi, this is my only goal for this project atm
<bashiordache>
I want to have a mobile machine that can run that game to develop some mods for it on the go and I only have this macbook pro laptop (i have a windows desktop)

bashiordache: OK, current Fedora should have everything needed to run the parts mentioned in that blog post, including Wine.
<bashiordache>
currently the game is installed and after trying to start for a while it logs this message in the terminal:
<bashiordache>
ERROR: ld.so: object '/tmp/pressure-vessel-libs-T319Y2/${LIB}/gameoverlayrenderer.so' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded (cannot open shared object file): ignored.

I found online that I can install CEF3 by adding dotnet48 to protontricks
<bashiordache>
but when i try to install protontricks i'm met with :
<bashiordache>
Failed to resolve the transaction:
<bashiordache>
Problem: package protontricks-1.12.0-1.fc41.noarch from fedora requires winetricks, but none of the providers can be installed
<bashiordache>
- conflicting requests

- nothing provides wine-common needed by winetricks-20230212-4.fc41.noarch from fedora
<bashiordache>
- nothing provides wine-common needed by winetricks-20240105-1.fc41.noarch from updates
<PaulFertser>
bashiordache: guess those additional packages need to be installed inside the muvm rather than the host system. I suggest you lurk here for more time and someone will give more details now that your problem is kinda clear.
<bashiordache>
PaulFertser: alright, any specific time I'm likely to have more success or just random times? XD
<nicolas17>
well several people are on holidays
<PaulFertser>
bashiordache: just do not leave the channel
<PaulFertser>
Installing additional wine parts inside muvm should be quite common so many people know.
<PaulFertser>
Also it's CCC happening atm, so many people are busy.
<bashiordache>
nicolas17: oh yea, didn't expect to have an answer tonight/tomorrow to be honest, plus i'm learning a bunch of new skills so it's all good, thanks
<bashiordache>
PaulFertser: CCC? what makes you think that it's muvm vs host system? also, is "not leaving the channel" a joke?
<chaos_princess>
we have logging here, so you will not miss messages if you go offline. (that assumes you are gonna read the logs)
<chaos_princess>
you are running it via steam, right?
<fl0_id>
bashiordache if you run it via steam (as installed via blogpost) all necessary stuff should be installed
<fl0_id>
if you installed it separately, it's prob not gonna work
<bashiordache>
the CEF3 error is via steam
<nicolas17>
CCC is a conference happening right now
<chaos_princess>
what were the exact steps you performed to launch it?
<fl0_id>
well yeah, but you have different steams installed at the same time
<fl0_id>
*can have
<nicolas17>
if you're using Steam it will handle Proton stuff for you so you shouldn't need to install Wine
<bashiordache>
installed asahi, installed steam, opened steam, installed the game, press play game
<bashiordache>
since it didnt start i opened steam via terminal and watched the logs
<chaos_princess>
i think you should try asking on fex-emu discord
<chaos_princess>
it is the x86 emulator this whole setup uses, and they might have seen this issue before
<chaos_princess>
since it is cef, i am assuming it is chrome sandbox nonsense again
<bashiordache>
since then i've tried installin stuff, following tutorials and stackoverflow and reddit stuff, started learning about how even tho there's a translation layer this is still aarch64/arm64 platform so the reason those packages arent found is becuase usually they're x64 packages etc

<bashiordache>
(how are you guys editing messages?)
<chaos_princess>
you don't
<PaulFertser>
bashiordache: chaos communication congress. And no, staying on channel is not a joke, it's how most people use IRC.
<chaos_princess>
irc has no support for editing messages, or offline mode or anything. its 80-s tech basically :P
<bashiordache>
chaos_princess: so you're just sending separate messages and it's visually displayed as a larger message box (which i interpreted as a message being edited to add a new part) i see
