more wow errors
<monthebiff>
[S_API FAIL] SteamAPI_Init() failed; no appID found.
<monthebiff>
Either launch the game from Steam, or put the file steam_appid.txt containing the correct appID in your game folder.
<monthebiff>

<monthebiff>
Client 87 disconnected with error: ECONNRESET: Connection reset by peer
<monthebiff>
to me all that looks pretty vague/ none critical, but its what happens before the initialistion failed dialog pops up
<monthebiff>
i've not seen any error logs for the actual wow.exe yet, is there anyway i can get more information about whats happening? I have to launch from steam right?
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess>
client disconnected, and ld.so are harmless.
<chaos_princess>
how are you launching the thing?
<monthebiff>
as a none steam game added to the library
<monthebiff>
is how i've had it working on past linux boxes
<monthebiff>
i've tried both running the blizzard battle net launcher (works, gets me a semi functional launcher), and then launching wow from there
<monthebiff>
and launching the wow.exe directly from steam
<monthebiff>
in both cases i get a pop up dialog with 'Game initialisation failed: 1'
<monthebiff>
very informative *sarcasm*
<monthebiff>
i can get some logs for the launcher... think there may be a problem with encryption certificates... but the wow.exe itself i've not found any output yet
<monthebiff>
i was wondering if i could run the wow.exe directly using muvm / fex, and if that would give me more info... but i dont think it would work without the wine/ proton translation from steam.
<monthebiff>
(cheers for responding :)
<monthebiff>
the fact that i can even attempt any of this is phenomenal work
pb17 has joined #asahi
<chadmed>
afaik wine _should_ work from fex now on fedora?
<monthebiff>
thats nice to maybe know about
<monthebiff>
i presume there would be some kind of flag to indicate a wine prefix that lines up with a proton build within steam or something?
<monthebiff>
apologies if language isn muddled, has been a long while since i've thought about linux/wine/games. currently sat on a hostel floor backpacking in new zealand.
<chadmed>
oh youre just across the pond
<chadmed>
uhhh i dont think you can use a proton prefix with vanilla wine
<monthebiff>
depending on which pond, it's a pretty big pond :P
<monthebiff>
new zealand is a million miles away from everywhere
<monthebiff>
back to perth next year
<chadmed>
only a short flight from brisbane :)

just trying a few different proton versions to see if anything magic happens
<monthebiff>
went back to proton version 8.x.something
<monthebiff>
got
<monthebiff>
D3D12CreateDevice failed with error 0x80070057
tobhe_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]

which may or may not correlate with anything happening in 9.x.x, experimental, and hotfix.

<j`ey>
chadmed: Lina said fedora's wine is still broked
<monthebiff>
what kinda broked? I just launched Doom (2016) and that got as far as the game menu.
<chaos_princess>
that refers specifically to non-steam wine
<monthebiff>
thought so, just checking
<j`ey>
yeah I went the route of trying to not involve steam at all, so Im using Arch's Wine for now
<monthebiff>
you're on arch? i thought arch asahi wasn't maintained any more?
<monthebiff>
i miss arch :P is what i run on the desktop back home
<chadmed>
j_ey took arch's x86 wine build and transplanted it into the fedora rootfs afaik
<chadmed>
also you wouldnt miss arch if you had to use ALARM
<monthebiff>
so i've heard
<monthebiff>
makes me sad, i've only ever had nice arch
<j`ey>
what chadmed said
<j`ey>
downloaded the wine tarball, converted it to erofs, and then used muvm's image argument to overlay it in
<monthebiff>
thats... cool
<monthebiff>
one thing the blizz launcher did do was successfully (maybe) download and install wow
<j`ey>
it's a 2000s game that uses directdraw, so I dont get to benefit from any of the fancy dxvk stuff
<monthebiff>
so i've got 100GB of space being eaten by this game that's frustrating the crap out of me
<j`ey>
:(
<monthebiff>
and i know it can work
<monthebiff>
i've seen it working in linux...
<monthebiff>
it can work :P
<j`ey>
there's a lot more layers here D:
<monthebiff>
i think wow would probably also fit that description of not needing the dxvk stuff
<monthebiff>
unless they've had a major upgrade since shadowlands
<chadmed>
cs2 also works in linux but not on our stack yet so yknow
<monthebiff>
>.< denial
<chadmed>
and thats a native linux game!
<monthebiff>
i believe
<monthebiff>
i just want an error message beyond 'failed' for now
<monthebiff>
if its something yet to be implemented or missing, tell me :P
<monthebiff>
i also had some graphics errors with original doom/ doom II
<monthebiff>
which surprised me: im used to seeing doom run on anything that vaguely has a display

Hello, is it possible to run Asahi in a virtual machine on a M-series mac? I want to take advantage of Asahi's GPU acceleration but I can't run anything on an M3 yet.
<chaos_princess>
no
<M3MaxUser343>
Alright, thank you
<chaos_princess>
the longer answer is: 1. it makes no sense to run asahi in a vm, since vms can run generic linux. 2. a major reason as to why there is no m3 support yet is that the m3 gpu is not supported yet. 3. macos does not expose the real gpu to the vms, and instead exposes a paravirtualized interface
<M3MaxUser343>
Out of curiosity, on M2 devices, is the driver *actually* vulkan compliant or is it like MoltenVK where it's non-compliant.
