<ml|> Hello, how well does asahi run on a mac mini mi max?
<ml|> m1*
Bertrand___ has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<j`ey> ml|: runs wel
<j`ey> well
Bertrand___ has joined #asahi
<ml|> j`ey: Which distro are you using?
<j`ey> Fedora
<ml|> Have any idea if the same is true when using Debian?
<j`ey> I dont think it's as polished as Fedora, but I know there's a bunch of people using it
<ml|> Ok, thank you. Which mac are running asahi on?
<j`ey> m2 air
<ml|> are you*
<ml|> Need to decide whether to build a new PC, get a mac mini m1 max with 64GB of RAM.

<leio> fwiw, my argument for getting a M2 Ultra was for the completely silent horsepower, to the point I'm complaining about monitor coil whines instead now. That might not be an argument for everyone, given the higher costs
<ml|> Yes, that is one of my considerations. Power usage, noise, form factor.
<ml|> What holds me back are: upgrades and linux support.
verlio has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ml|> Looking at something like this: https://www.ebay.com/itm/196879578240 Or a PC which will have similar specs, but will be bigger, noisier and use more power.
<ml|> Also considered a new M4 mac mini. But that will not run linux on bare metal for a while. Though have also considered using mac OS, using the terminal. I prefer using the terminal for most things, with xmonad[tiling wm].
verlio has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> ml| personally I also try not to upgrade too often. so hoping to get at least 5 years from this machine. then maybe upgrades are less relevant (if you don't get a entry level model)
<ml|> fl0_id: Yes, I do not upgrade very often why getting a lot of ram on a Mac. This PC is about 8 years old, looking at my options at the moment.
<fl0_id> ml| and I would say really depends on your use case. for me it was that I couldn't get this amount of ram and quietness in a similar form factor or just at all. Like the same amount of vram with nvidia gpus, while more capable, would not even fit in a workstation or would need like a 15k server card
npgoalkeeper has joined #asahi
verlio has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ml|> Agreed, what keeps me considering a PC is possible upgrades and linux support.
<fl0_id> ml| well, that then seems very much in favour of pc :) esp if you don't need a laptop
<ml|> Yes, the Apple hardware is hard to pass up tho. Why keep going back and forth :)
<fl0_id> yeah, if you don't need linux right now, I would get an m4
<fl0_id> ml| there is no right answer.
<fl0_id> depends on what you like
<ml|> Yeah.
<fl0_id> f.e. me I got an m3 mbp but with knowing there is a good possibility of linux support at some point. and until then I'm fine using macos and vms
<ml|> Any experience with terminal usage on Mac OS/
<ml|> *?
<fl0_id> esp as I sometimes need proprietary software anyway that would be a pain to use through vms/wine on linux
<fl0_id> ml| yes lots
<fl0_id> and I can only recommend installing gnu versions / non-apple versions through homebrew or maybe nix, then it's almost like linux
<ml|> Great, how would you compare it to linux terminal?
<fl0_id> otherwise you get some bsd utils that are a bit dfiferent
<fl0_id> ml| you can configure it to your liking and it's very similar. some devices / special stuff is different of course.
<fl0_id> though on a new machine you might have to give permissions et first
<fl0_id> you can have all your dotfiles
<ml|> Ok, can for example run 'mpv' in a terminal an work just like in linux; play a file, etc..?
<fl0_id> yes, if it's in your path
<ml|> Nice.
<fl0_id> you can manage path like on linux through .profile or .bashrc
<fl0_id> (ok standard is zsh now, but i still use bash)
<fl0_id> I think I also upgraded bash from homebrew, as the shipped one was too old for sth)
<ml|> I prefer zsh and zsh is default on Mac OS.
<fl0_id> yeah sure.
<ml|> How do you compare howbrew to nix?
<ml|> *homebrew
verlio has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> for opening file with a connected gui program there is also `open <some document>` which is sometimes nice
___nick___ has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> ml| I have not really used much nix myself, but I know others who use it. For me nix is just more hassle. When upgrading from my hackintosh I just transfered everything and it mostly just worked, except having to reinstall some thing and changing the homebrew prefix (as it changed between macos versions)
<ml|> Hmm, so perhaps getting a M4 mac mini and using the terminal is a viable solution.
<fl0_id> ml| if you are not married to xmonad. I use a tiling app like rectangle
<fl0_id> but it's not proper tiling i guess
<ml|> Yes, that is the hardest change for me.
IEF has joined #asahi
<ml|> Is it possible to define a keybind to run a command in a terminal. And call up terminals at will?
npgoalkeeper has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<fl0_id> ml| this depends mostly on your terminal app
<fl0_id> like on linux there are different ones
<fl0_id> I use iterm2 which has a lot of features. like quake style terminal.
<ml|> alacritty is available on mac. What recently switched to, from rxvt.
<fl0_id> oh and on some keyboards I switch aroudn ctrl and super or things like that, to have the same positions on all keys
<fl0_id> ml| yes
<fl0_id> I have it but didn't use it much
<fl0_id> I'm sure you could do a global hotkey
<fl0_id> but never tried that
<ml|> I find it to be very nice change from urxvt
<ml|> Right now can call different terminals for different uses, with alacritty and tmux. Using keybings defined in xmonad.
<ml|> With the terminals at different sizes.
<fl0_id> there's probably a solution for that, but not sure what's best. I think with iterm2 you can have different profiles that you can bind to a key combo. but not sure if they automatically go to the same position.
<fl0_id> there might also be a builtin or addon way to do it, not sure
<fl0_id> oh or you can have different spaces/screens
<fl0_id> that works for sure
<fl0_id> that one app is always in the same "space"
<fl0_id> like a different desktop on linux
<ml|> Good, usually just use about 5 worksapces here of the available 9.
verlio has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ml|> But, the ability to call up terminals in whatever worksapce working in is a time saver, IMHO.
<fl0_id> ml| yeah for sure. I mean I just either leave the relevant ones open or if I need a new one switch to terminal app then cmd + n
<ml|> And can even move the fixed terminals with keybinds, from one workspace to another.
<ml|> Yes, just my current habits for years now.
<fl0_id> I use rectangle for that. though not sure if fixed. though I mostly use it to move between monitors, so I do not use spaces that much
<ml|> Which can change them, but having to relearn new ways is abit of a pasin;)
<ml|> *a bit *pain
kaazoo has quit [Quit: Leaving.]
<fl0_id> ml| yeah i get it
<ml|> Talking with you about this, has made me realize that perhaps setting up an M1 or M2 with linux. Might be the way for me to go, over an M4.
<fl0_id> ml| sounds good!
<fl0_id> happy to help, yeah sometimes talking through helps
<fl0_id> for me it was less change b/c for some time before I had a hackintosh
<ml|> fl0_id: Thank You, for your help. You answered some question I had.
<ml|> fl0_id: Really appreciated.
dorkbutt is now known as Guest3086
<ml|> I did use Mac OS long ago in the OS X early days, before switching to Linux.

<ml|> fl0_id: Would you say that M2 is well supported as the M1?
<j`ey> yep
<ml|> j`ey: Thank You.
<ml|> j`ey: What would you say you miss support with either the M[1-2]?
<leio> external monitors beyond physical HDMI ports
<fl0_id> mics probably for laptops. and that
<fl0_id> mic support is a software issue from what I know
<fl0_id> i.e. that they want to give good mic support
<j`ey> ml|: what leio said
* leio uses a headset anyways
<ml|> Ok, wish that the Thunderbolt ports would work :)
verlio has joined #asahi
<fl0_id> leio for me sometimes on macos the builtin mic gives better sound then many headsets. so sometimes used headphones but builtin mic
derzahl has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chaos_princess> since you mentioned xmonad - asahi really strongly suggests using a wayland-based compositor and not x, and i do not think there is a wayland version of that
<chaos_princess> there are technical reasons why x11 will never work as well
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ml|> chaos_princess: Ah, good point. Yes, xmonad does not currently work in wayland.
<chaos_princess> there is something called "rootful xwayland", which may or may not work as well, or better or worse, and may or may not be a solution for xmonad and other x11 specific things
verlio has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
