<slh>
Nits: it probably doesn't exactly help that those google onhub device were pretty much a North American only phenomenon and basically unobtainium in Europe (technically they were on the market, but very rare)
<Nits>
slh: I agree. These devices though will start showing up everywhere in the hundreds as google's EOL date is coming closer(December 19,2022). Maybe something can be done to get a working image. I'll try to learn and try it out
<slh>
a lot of the really hard base development on tooling and google specifics has already been dealt with for the later google wifi mesh clients (ipq40xx), so you have a quite reasonable starting point to build upon

mrkiko: not even 50 % is converted. I wrote the peoplr adding the devices but often they did not respond.

<aiyion>
As I understand its presence is mandatory in ath79?
<aiyion>
There have been (primarily nand) devices in ar71xx, that had tar images.
<robimarko>
Yeah
<aiyion>
in ath79, they all get this metadata filter, which still is mandatory.
<robimarko>
That adss OpenWrt metadata
<robimarko>
Like supported device, release etc
<aiyion>
how well is a sysupgrade supposed to run on a 19.07 device, that expects its regular tar file with this filter in place?
mzvd has joined #openwrt-devel
<aiyion>
And if the answer is "not at all", are there devices, that got patched in ar71xx in order to handle "sysupgrade.tar | append-metadata" images, that I could take a look at?
<aiyion>
But that's only for md5 checked upgrades.

<tmn505>
aiyion: as I remember, ar71xx had a lot of different image formats, even for sysupgrade and the check for metadata wasn't mandatory for all of them. The situation changed with ath79. The commits You mentioned were to just smoothly transition between both targets of 19.07.
<tmn505>
And the smooth transition between both targets is/was not mandatory.
<aiyion>
I am still verifying it's not something I messed up, but I think I've got an Aerohive HiveAP121, that lacks the smooth transition you mentioned.
<aiyion>
I'm looking for another device, that had tar sysupgrade images, for which that smooth transition was implemented, so that I can patch it on my end.
<tmn505>
the devices I did it for are bit special, so it probably won't apply to Yours
<aiyion>
mhm.
robimarko has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<aiyion>
Just vierified it using a sysupgrade relased on the downloads page.
<aiyion>
Invalid sysupgrade file.
<aiyion>
Image check failed.
<tmn505>
but does it fail in case of ar71xx -> ath79 or reverse?
<aiyion>
ar71xx -> ath79.
<tmn505>
then You need to check sysupgrade an lib/upgrade/platform.sh where does it fail
<tmn505>
compare the image with this > https://git.openwrt.org/?p=openwrt/openwrt.git;a=blob;f=target/linux/ar71xx/base-files/lib/upgrade/platform.sh;h=f44cdb061f749ce9a4066fdcf6429670af1b8214;hb=refs/heads/openwrt-19.07#l362
<tmn505>
scratch that, I think I posted wrong link, let me find the proper one
<aiyion>
how do I invoke platform sh properly from hand?
<tmn505>
dunno, never tried. Add some set -x to it in few places.
<aiyion>
mhm, k
<tmn505>
ok, find what's nand_do_platform_check doing in 19.07 and compare it with the image.

<stintel>
there's some guy waiting for an upstream fix to then bump miniupnpd, it will probably switch to script-based nft handling which I dislike but if that's the way upstream wants to go forward who am I to object
<stintel>
anyway, it works for me and I no longer care due to above, so I won't be spending time on miniupnpd anymore
<Harm_>
Yes, I'll write up some documentation soon. So far it seems to work well
<Habbie>
nice nice
<Habbie>
for people who never opened the box my hack may help too
<Harm_>
Yeah indeed
<Habbie>
very nice work :)
<Harm_>
The older firmwares also have a firmware upload function but those seem to do some kind of signature check
<Habbie>
i'm not surprised
