<steev> HdkR: what is the verdict on the SN770M?
<Jasper[m]> It fits

<mynery[m]> I am running arch and I did get widevine to run by builing the removed widevine-aarch64 from the aur. I now struggle with the codecs, but that seems to be a very browser specific thing.
<mynery[m]> Just got that working as well :) Now the only thing I know doesn't work yet is suspend.
<steev> suspend works, just not super deep levels
<mynery[m]> i assume this is those new hibernation level thing? if so, is hibernate an option?

<_[m]1> I think I used firefox nightly too get ahead at some point, don't remember the mileage though
<_[m]1> also can't build ungoogled chromium 😧
<_[m]1> but generally using chromium to consume media anyway, not much to call home about

<jjardon[m]> hi, is the lenovo x13s the best aarch64 linux laptop you can buy?
<HdkR> Depends
<HdkR> Apple products have higher performance CPUs and GPUs which might be "best" for you
<HdkR> and getting Linux on those devices can be done with bare-metal or VM
<jjardon[m]> ah true. would you think the linux support for those is better though?
<HdkR> Both devices have missing features, so "better" depends on your use case
<schillmania> Apple products best selling point is the apple ecosystem
<jjardon[m]> i know webcam doesnt work in the x13s ; any other thing that doesnt work at all?
<HdkR> Still some audio weirdness that needs to be resolved. USB-C orientation quirks, GPU thermal throttling not wired up, GPU still sometimes crashes under heavy workloads. External display can't drive full bandwidth in some cases. The webcam. Is video decode and encode working?
<HdkR> The list is definitely getting smaller
<_[m]1> imo the only nice model of macbook is the 2020 macbook m1 air, once the external display gets fixed I'll install asahi once on mine
<_[m]1> I had the macbook m1 ultra, I could play dota2 on it on 4k 144hz monitor, which is pretty crazy but not high reso with all details right
<HdkR> Well, M1 Max anyway. Ultra isn't in the macbooks
<_[m]1> so I sold it but too early lol so I had to get an inbetween so went 2020 model for now, until I can use x13s for personal use
<_[m]1> HdkR: yeah true, I forgot 🙂
<_[m]1> I think the macbooks did get a lot "cheaper" since pricepoint is the same for way more performance
<_[m]1> this second hand 2020 model was 800 euro 16gb
<_[m]1> * hand 2020 macbook air model was
<_[m]1> there was one major painpoint with asahi but again my memory fails me
<HdkR> If it was early then probably 16KB page size kernel.
<jhovold> jjardon[m]: take a look at https://github.com/jhovold/linux/wiki/X13s for the latest status
<jjardon[m]> thanks a lot
<_[m]1> I'm guessing all hardware is cheaper in USA right?
<jhovold> camera support is under way, the missing bits are hibernation and virtualisation
<jhovold> and most things are already supported upstream, so you can run a mainline kernel on the x13s
<jhovold> afaik, that's far from being possible with apple hw
<HdkR> Yea, if you're wanting upstream then Apple hardware is father behind
<_[m]1> and don't about you but it feels awkward having such small ctrl key with the mac keyboard, this alone makes me not want to run linux on it lol
<_[m]1> * and don't know about you
<jjardon[m]> jhovold: wow, its really better than i though! my understanding also was that camera will be never supported
<jhovold> jjardon[m]: the current work relies on doing some image processing in user space (libcamera) instead of in hw, but hopefully that will change too at some point
<_[m]1> reading on hackernews, for asahi (it's arch btw didn't know :))
<_[m]1> - no HDMI out
<_[m]1> - bluetooth audio wonkiness
<_[m]1> - no built-in speakers
<_[m]1> that's mmm
<_[m]1> personally I think I'd answer your question with yes, x13s is best linux aarch64 laptop 🙂
<HdkR> Built-in speakers just started working a couple days ago on the M1 Air, and HDMI out on Macbooks is a heavy construction zone, was shown working like last week :P
<_[m]1> so 5 months is longer than you'd think 🙂 didn't know it was still so active (I mean they started right after the release of first M1 as I remember)
<HdkR> Yea, they started right at launch
<_[m]1> funny timing then 🙂
<_[m]1> * then 🙂 and pretty crazy it took 3-4 years huh 😲
<jjardon[m]> <jhovold> "jjardon: the current work relies..." <- thats really great; not care that much but using the webcam is sometimes needed at wkrk :)
<jjardon[m]> i guess is not possible buy from lenovo with linux pre-installed, right?
<HdkR> Correct
<jjardon[m]> is there any way to show "support" for this? so lenovo thinks about doing that in future?
<Jasper[m]> <_[m]1> "reading on hackernews, for asahi..." <- Not anymore, it's Fedora officially now
<neobrain> _[m]1: The Asahi folks have been very consistent with activity ever since launch, but media only reports about the big drops (for better or worse)
<neobrain> (it's probably more active than ever even due to more people having joined development)
<neobrain> For audio it's worth noting that macbooks have *much* better audio than the x13s currently, thanks to speakersafetyd
schillmania has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jjardon[m]> m2 chip looks certainly more powerfull than the qualcomm one. not sure how that translates when running both in linux
<HdkR> If you only care about raw CPU performance numbers then when both are running Linux, the M2 will be faster.

<jhovold> jjardon[m]: lenovo has provided some hw and helped out to get fw released
<jhovold> i think they may some forum where things like preinstalled linux may be discussed
<jhovold> or maybe you could mention it when ordering, not sure anyone sees that though
