<chadmed>
it's probably related to the fact that we have no power gating of soc subunits yet

mps thanks for that. I am on the road at the moment. I will try this during the week and report back.
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: ok, I have tested yesterday running it on M1 but with linux guest
<mps>
it works fine with some parameters changed
<marcan>
chadmed: it isn't though, because they don't actually get hot and runtime is ~8h if properly idle, which wouldn't fly if it were actually burning power

Cy8aer[m]: temperature is a proxy for power consumption. the correct way to measure this is to unplug the charger and look at the battery discharge rate (or, in the future once we have hwmon, the relevant SMC power/current sensors)
<marcan>
temperature is going to confuse you due to thermal mass and the like
<marcan>
the discharge rate updates within seconds and is a much more reliable way to pinpoint when the machine is using power or not
<marcan>
the machine getting hot when charging is normal, all chargers get hot since power conversion isn't 100% efficient
