fortelling[m]: It doesn't. SSE2 in an x86 extension. An ARM chip won't natively support it. I believe m1 supports NEON (the ARM equivalent). How are you building and/or running Tor Browser?

QQ - I played with doing suspend-to-ram yesterday, and it seems the current kernel kinda works there. at least it suspends and comes back, unsure of what power mode it's in. that part isn't THAT important to me, just looking to get to the point where I can close the lid and go somewhere without it burning too hot in the bag

I am using this "docking station/port replicator" - https://www.czc.cz/i-tec-usb-c-metal-nano-docking-station-4k-hdmi-lan-power-delivery-100-w/251603/produkt . As of today, the USB-A's for keyboards and mouse are working plus the Ethernet port. However, when I start my Mac mini with HDMI cable plugged into this thing, the monitor remains blank and I can only hard reset the Mac. If I plug the HDMI directly into the Mac, it works O.K.

axboe: it's s2idle, we don't actually suspend the CPUs yet (that needs PSCI) nor do proper full system sleep

it's not just broadcom that's the problem, pcie itself goes bananas if you do actually power gate the hardware. might need a full reinit, which is currently done in m1n1
