aarch64 does not support multilib
chadmed_ is now known as chadmed

Ok that explains it

what are you trying to run
<Yes_This_is_Saeko[m]>
Just tryna install basic shit like discord
<chadmed>
discord is an electron app it shouldnt need any 32 bit libraries at all
<chadmed>
if the version of electron they use is new enough it will work out of the box

Running Debian on an M1 Debian with a 6-0-rc5 kernel. Just noticed my display resolution has dropped to 1920x1080. Xrandr reports Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 4096 x 4096 None-1 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1920x1080 60.00*+
<Ry_Darcy>
This used to be 4k (3840x2160) a while ago. Anyone any ideas?

M1 Debian should read M1 Mini.

<marcan>
steev: Thanks for making the Kali page changes. I think the wording now makes a lot more sense.
<chadmed>
m1n1 is probably initialising the framebuffer at 1080p
<jannau>
Ry_Darcy: you have to specify display resolutions above 1920x1200 manually by appending a parameter to /boot/efi/m1n1/boot.bin. The kernel update recreates /boot/efi/m1n1/boot.bin since its new dtbs need to be integrated
<j`ey>
did you update m1n1? because you had the: display=3840x2160 variable at the end of your m1n1 right?
<steev>
marcan: :) it wasn't me, it was gamb1t but i'll pass on the message
<marcan>
I'd probably still add a note to the blurb above though, something like "Note: The ARM64 / Apple Silicon images are intended to be installed as a VM and will not work on most bare metal ARM64 platforms" perhaps?
<steev>
We have that in the documentation that users are *supposed* to read, but maybe?
<marcan>
*supposed*, yeah... :)
<marcan>
Just a suggestion, because it does mark a significant difference vs. the x86 images, and the "direct access to hardware" etc points don't really apply
gabuscus has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<marcan>
Of course you coul also just add bare metal Asahi support, maybe once I fix brcmfmac monitor mode? ;)
<Ry_Darcy>
I did nor rebuild m1n1. However I downloaded Glanzmanns 4k boot.bin. May that boot.bin is also too old/obsolete now.
<Ry_Darcy>
nor=not
<chadmed>
yeah i think thats an ancient boot image and probably doesnt have the display= variable set
<marcan>
kernel updates re-install m1n1. there is no persistent mechanism to configure custom m1n1 builds right now other than replacing the package.
<marcan>
I intend to add something like /etc/m1n1.conf but it's not there yet
<steev>
surprisingly enough, brcmfmac not supporting monitor isn't what's stopping me; it's the fact that users could break their speakers
<steev>
because users want audio
<marcan>
hah
<Ry_Darcy>
@all Thanks for the information. I will rebuild m1n1 then.
<marcan>
well, I think we can get crappy audio out pretty soon, I'm basically just waiting on the glitches that were reported in the latest kernel for that
<marcan>
good audio will take longer; good loud audio will take even longer ;)
<steev>
i know how it goes :) i'm just remembering the daisy_snow debacle with hrw breaking his
<j`ey>
when you say crappy.. is it crappy for non-audio-nerds? :P
<chadmed>
yes it sucks some serious ass
<marcan>
it's better than many other laptops, tbh...
<marcan>
(just sending raw to woofers that is)
<chadmed>
fair point but thats not a very high bar to clear :P
<j`ey>
chadmed: well thats my point, if it's already better than other laptops, probably fine for most people!
<chadmed>
i think more important than the absolute quality is the quality relative to macos, because people are going to reboot into linux and go "wtf this sucks"
<chadmed>
even though its still "better" than the 15 year old thinkpad theyre replacing
<marcan>
yeah, it's my only worry with pushing a shitty audio version, I'd have to make it *very* clear in the announcement that it's not representative
<marcan>
but there's a good argument to be made that it's better than nothing
<steev>
if bluetooth worked, use a bluetooth speaker/headphones
<chadmed>
yeah as long as nothing can let the magic smoke out
<j`ey>
marcan: the whole distro is alpha :P
<chadmed>
steev: bt does work
<steev>
that's what we say with the thinkpad x13s heh
<jannau>
bluetooth works as long as you don't use 2.4GHz wifi
<marcan>
it's actually not entirely clear to what extent btcoex is broken
<marcan>
it completely kills LDAC earphones, but macOS doesn't support LDAC *at all*, so it's possible that is just not supported / a bandwidth issue with coex?
<jannau>
the next kernel will have working headphone audio on all models
<marcan>
with SBC it does work, with varying levels of dropouts, but wifi performance does consistently drop with BT enabled so I think it's doing *something* with coex

<mps>
if audio is 'good enough' for non audio nerds I vote to add it, maybe disabled by default in DTS
<chadmed>
gotta make it reliable and safe first
<marcan>
it's already there, disabled by default in DTS
<chadmed>
and thats how it is now, the drivers are built in the default kernel config but you have to edit the DTS
<mps>
aha, good
<marcan>
re safe, now that we have the macOS speaker model data I think we can find a safe max volume. won't be loud, but it'll work.
<marcan>
at least for models which have such safety model
<marcan>
for those that don't, we could just pick something very conservative (audibly)
<marcan>
though I do plan to cook up my own safety models (always fun to beat apple at their own game)
<marcan>
but that needs povik to implement IVSENSE first :)
<mps>
I will not enable speakers till it become safe, for alpine kernel I mean
<Ry_Darcy>
Re rebuilding m1n1, git clone and make and that is it? No more steps?
<marcan>
you need to enable the drivers to get the jack to work anyway
<marcan>
Ry_Darcy: why are you rebuilding m1n1?
<marcan>
just set the display= argument
<Ry_Darcy>
Because the DTB's have changed as far as I am aware.

I don't know how Debian does it, on Arch the DTBs come from the kernel
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: same for alpine
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: sorry, I meant marcan
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: https://tpaste.us/70dd this is script for alpine which update second stagr m1n1
<mps>
you can add more parameters there
<Ry_Darcy>
Running Debian here.
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: principle is same
<mps>
i.e. 'cat' what you need
<Ry_Darcy>
mps /usr/share/u-boot-asahi and /boot/dtbs-asahi/apple/* do not exist on Debian.
<marcan>
probably best to move to #asahi-alt then, we can't help you with nonstandard setups
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: ofc, I send this script just as example
<Ry_Darcy>
Was not aware I was "non-standard"..
<mps>
Ry_Darcy: only asahi distro is official, afaik
<chadmed>
standard = asahi distro as installed by the installer
<chadmed>
!asahi is nonstandard
<Ry_Darcy>
Glanzmann's Debian installer works perfect for me. Thanks.

Ry_Darcy: In case noone answered you question, in order to run 4k, you need to do every time you installed m1n1: echo 'display=wait,3840x2160' >> /boot/efi/m1n1/m1n1.bin
<jn>
(Oh. I had to read that three times because i associated 4k with page size instead of display width. oh.)
aleasto- is now known as aleasto
<Glanzmann>
The https://tg.st/u/4k.bin is m1n1 with the resolution appended. However I'm not on Linux Kernel Version 6. I wait till the official asahi has that.
<Glanzmann>
Anyway, back to sleep. :-)

Hi, I was reading the About in the Asahi website, it says that Asahi right now is a project and will be released as an arch linux rpm, maybe this is caused by my limited knoweledge, but before installing it I would like to understand, does that mean there is no package manager at the moment? can't I just use it as arch, rolling release and update it untill it is no longer alpha or beta?
nico_32 has joined #asahi
<jannau>
selene751[m]: you can use it as arch linux (arm). the AsahiLinux reference distro is just a package repo with a few packages on top on arch linux arm
