<RowanG[m]> If a project explicitly uses vulkan then even with the openGL userspace driver and kernel part from Lina and Alyssa it won't work right?
<RowanG[m]> There isn't some kind of magical translation
<RowanG[m]> I ask because I glscopeclient is moving towards Vulkan
thelounge7571340 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<_jannau_> no, there is only zink for the inverse translation. OpenGL on top of a native vulkan driver
<_jannau_> there will be a vulkan driver for agx, the opengl es driver is the first milestone since it is simple (compared to the alternatives) and alyssa has experience writing opengl es drivers.

<veloek> What are the downsides of choosing another distro than the "official" arch based Asahi Linux? Is there a delay before new features are propagated out to the different package repositories?
<sven> different level of quality assurance and you don’t get to complain here if anything breaks ;)

<pavelkukacka[m]> <tobhe> "itisyeetimetoday: i have been..." <- Nice job! Is it possible to get Debian stable running? Or something one can tranform into (current) Linux Mint or LMDE..?
<veloek> sven: Heh, duly noted :-)
<chadmed[m]> Depends on which one you choose. I try to keep gentoo tracking within 24 hours of asahi getting updates but also cant really help you if somethingn explodes unexpectedly
<chadmed[m]> I smoke test stuff and guard it behind the unstable keyword until im sure it works though so stuff shouldnt explode unexpectedly
<mps> veloek: as chadmed[m] told, I do nearly same for alpine linux. If you interested on other distros please join #asahi-alt and ask more there
<veloek> I've been testing Asahi using arch and it's fine, but I prefer debian. Think I will postpone doing the switch for a while still.

<Retr0id> ChaosPrincess, that's what I'm using right now, but there's some firefox/discord bug that causes horrendous GC hangs ever few seconds, and I'd rather not use chrome
<j`ey> the discord app itself is electron right? which is basically chrome..?
<bluetail> electron <.<
<Retr0id> indeed, but slightly more native feeling, and without as many googley bits
<pavelkukacka[m]> <Ry_Darcy> "pavelkukacka Is it possible to..." <- Instructions are for Debian Testing, not stable.

<j`ey> kov: there's the one that leif made, or is that what you already used?
<sven> there are some fedora people working on official support afaik, but I don’t think they have anything ready for public testing yet
vmeson has joined #asahi
<kov> j`ey, no, I made my own installation, leif's didn't seem great to me as its goal is to be minimalist, it uses iwd instead of NetworkManager and the like
<kov> but I saw markan's comment on twitter that fedora official images are pushing forward and there were only a few rough edges to be sorted out still, so I was hoping I could take those for a spin if there is an alpha already

<eggnog12[m]> hey guys, huge noob to linux/asahi, is there any way at all to get wine installed on asahi?
<tpw_rules> there's some distant chance it's possible with qemu as a binfmt_misc handler
<eggnog12[m]> basically my goal is to get wine installed so i can download games with lutris
<tpw_rules> i would not expect games to be a pleasant experience. it might be better with box64 or FEX but iirc those do not work due to the 16k page size issue
<eggnog12[m]> yes i heard of box64 as an alternative but because I know nothing, i have no clue how to get this game installed
<tpw_rules> oh maybe box64 can tolerate it
<eggnog12[m]> i should be able to run a .exe file with box64, or no?
<chadmed[m]> No its not a windows api translation layer
<tpw_rules> box64 is specifically for linux programs. i don't know if anyone has combined box64 and wine before
<JayFoxRox[m]> even then you wouldn't have a graphics driver (yet), and even if you have one, it will likely only run legacy OpenGL which probably isn't enough for most wine D3D
<eggnog12[m]> oh, i can fully describe my goal and if that's impossible let me know...
<eggnog12[m]> apparently dungeons can be easily installed through lutris but obviously I dont have wine
<eggnog12[m]> I want to download the Minecraft Launcher for windows and run it, because through the launcher i can download minecraft dungeons. and finally I want to run minecraft dungeons.
<chadmed[m]> Theres a native linux build of the minecraft launcher
<eggnog12[m]> yes but i dont think it will allow me to download minecraft dungeons because it is only available on windows
<chadmed[m]> Regardless it is impossible to play at this stage because there is no gpu acceleration
<eggnog12[m]> on asahi you mean?
<JayFoxRox[m]> and without audio it's probably no fun either
<chadmed[m]> Yeah
<chadmed[m]> Have a look at the wiki to see which features do and don’t work at the moment
<JayFoxRox[m]> and wether minecraft will work on the current 16k pages is questionable, because windows apps will assume 4k pages, so emulation is a bit trickier; also see FEX in https://github.com/AsahiLinux/docs/wiki/Broken-Software#broken-packages
<eggnog12[m]> can i still get the game to download and open even if gpu acceleration doesnt exist yet? so then when it does it's ready to play?
<chadmed[m]> Can’t say for certain, it’s more likely than not that the answer is no though
<chadmed[m]> The page alignment issue is kind of insurmountable
<eggnog12[m]> is there an ELI5 for pages, i've never heard that before
<chadmed[m]> It’s the size of a single “region” of system memory
<eggnog12[m]> oh okay
<chadmed[m]> On x86/amd64 they are 4K and on these machines they are 16K
<JayFoxRox[m]> (to be fair, I'm not sure why box64 would work but FEX wouldn't, and I also don't quite understand why box64 doesn't do wine for 32-bit; I'll have to read up on their tech.. or probably ask phire :P )
<phire> you know... I haven't really looked into box64
<chadmed[m]> fex was just a matter of upstream not wanting to do it iirc
<chadmed[m]> box64 doesnt work with 32 bit because it uses native system libraries instead of pulling in the amd64 ones
<phire> I was talking with marcan, the 4k page issue is fixable. It's just going to require a bit of work to the linux kernel
<chadmed[m]> And since aarch64 does not have any 32 bit libs for it to use then it cant run 32 bit guest programs
<JayFoxRox[m]> <eggnog12[m]> "can i still get the game to..." <- long story short: it will probably take.. a long time [~years] (before GPU & audio & x86 / x64 emu + wine works). you'll be running a very experimental software stack for a while. so expect problems. if you want to play minecraft, get a windows machine or an x86 / x64 linux machine which is well-supported.
<JayFoxRox[m]> chadmed[m]: it's not that easy. windows EXE have their sections 4k aligned, so you might have to map 2 sections into the same 16k page, even if sections need different access permissions
<JayFoxRox[m]> phire: yeah, I read through that discussion; when I get my M1 machine I was just going to try some dirty mmap preload hacks to get around it for testing
<phire> I was playing half-life2 : lost cost (linux 32bit x86 binary) under FEX in a linux vm on my MBP
<eggnog12[m]> JayFoxRox[m]: okay, its not that big of a deal as this is just a side thing that i would like. I do have a windows desktop just no access to it right now, so I've been trying to figure out a way to play minecraft dungeons on my macbook
<phire> had a bug with mouse control (probally x87 emulation bug), but it was at playable speeds when parallels opengl passthough was working
<chadmed[m]> Have the issues with the source engine been sorted?
<phire> that opengl passthough is a peice of shit
<eggnog12[m]> also one small thing, how do updates work on this OS? do I just receive a notification similar to windows or is it different?
<j`ey> eggnog12[m]: you run a command to get updates
<eggnog12[m]> j`ey: okay, i figured that might be the case, where can I find this command?
<phire> btw... windows doesn't actually fully support 4k allocations. So it might be possible to get wine quite far with just 16k pages
<j`ey> eggnog12[m]: it's "pacman -Syu"
<chadmed[m]> Ive been meaning to set up an armv7 chroot to try wine with box86 but ive been swamped with other, far more boring crap
<eggnog12[m]> j`ey: thanks
