<bread_crumb[m]> I would just like to drop in again and ask, if I just set up a distro from the UEFI environment, will I still be able to receive the advantages of GPU acceleration once it is released? I suppose this should be native kernel so the answer should be no?
<bread_crumb[m]> * be native to the kernel so
<j`ey> bread_crumb[m]: depends on the kernel you use..
<j`ey> (so yes, if you use the right kernel!)
<jannau> and if you manage to update the second stage m1n1 to update the dtb with said kernel
<jannau> if you want to receive it when it lands in the asahi reference distro you probably need a patched mesa package as well
<j`ey> bread_crumb[m]: what distro do you want to use?
<bread_crumb[m]> j`ey: So, what I am trying to geek out on is setting up LUKS via the UEFI-only option, I guess it should be possible to set up FDE and then manually set up Asahi instead of having the installer do it? Then I should be able to receive patch updates while having FDE?
<bread_crumb[m]> The reason I asked about acceleration was for the reason that initially I was thinking that this would be only possible with Arch, which is in hindsight ridiculous if Asahi can be set up too..
<bread_crumb[m]> s/.././

<j`ey> yeah if you want to FDE you have to do it manually, but sure after that, it can just be a 'normal' asahi install with all the right packages
<bread_crumb[m]> Right, thanks, I suppose I'll get to reading.

<leif> I don't see how you could do FDE with grub as /boot would be on your root partition and the contents of /boot can't be encrypted.
leif has quit [Quit: Leaving]
chadmed has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau> ESP is large enough to act as /boot and asahi-scripts is now able to handle that
<jannau> build.sh is for building the installer and is not even on the installed system
<bread_crumb[m]> Right.

<bread_crumb[m]> <jannau> "build.sh is for building the..." <- Right so I would actually have to make my own install images, https://github.com/AsahiLinux/asahi-alarm-builder/blob/main/build.sh something like this reference, just that it would probably have to be different to allow a USB boot and install?

<bread_crumb[m]> Ok so FDE seems too much of a hassle, I suppose just non-root is enough, I suppose that would just mean partitioning the disk in forward and installing the OS into a free partition and then just follow regular arch instructions https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_a_non-root_file_system for the second free partition.

<leif> jannau exactly...sorry I should have mentioned that you would need to boot from the ESP. Interesting...ok I see how the mount_boot_esp and mount_sys_esp functions work. Nice
<leif> Almost identical though. Could probably condense those into a single function.
