We’ve long since maintained that macOS upgrades should not break Asahi, since most firmware is associated with an OS (so a macOS upgrade will not affect Asahi).

Hi guys, what codec does the M1 use? Mostly I'm wondering if it's the same as used by previous Intel macs, the cirrus 8409, which would allow for reusing some of github.com/davidjo/snd_hda_macbookpro

Hi guys
<bestouff[m]>
IT wants my linux install to have full disk encryption. Does anyone know how to do that ?

<mixi>
bestouff[m]: the last time I installed, I set up the unencrypted /, booted it once adding everything required for luks (cryptsetup), creating the new fs (mkfs.*) and network (to get the contents back into the encrypted rootfs) to the initramfs, rebooted into the initramfs rescue shell and set it up from there
kloenk has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<mixi>
but that is quite fiddly and easy to break

<mixi>
you have to be especially sure you can boot from files on the esp alone, as grub might load grub modules, kernels or initramfs from the linux /
<mixi>
and if you forgot something in the initramfs, but already set up the encrypted root you have to start from square one, as you already deleted the unencrypted one and can't go back there to regenerate a bigger initramfs
<rkjnsn>
I believe a couple of folks have created live media you can boot via U-Boot after installing the latter via the Asahi installer. Once booted into a live environment, you could theoretically use it to set up your encrypted root and set up the distro of your choice.

Hi, does anybody know if there are plans to make the M1 touchpad work with Asahi?
<j`ey>
matthewblott[m]: it already does?
<matthewblott[m]>
I'm not sure if this is the place to ask. I had a look through the git issues and couldn't see anything raised. I didn't realise you could buy an M1 without the touchpad (I wish I had) but I can't really use Linux without function keys and I basically use my touchpad for function keys.
<j`ey>
wait, you mean the touchbar on the MBP?
<matthewblott[m]>
Yeah
<j`ey>
there's plans to get it working to some basic functionality, but it's not very high priority
<matthewblott[m]>
That was my fear, I didn't think it would be high up the list.
<matthewblott[m]>
I hate the bloody thing (the touchpad) but I'm stuck with it.
<j`ey>
you can do fn+number for function keys
<j`ey>
(or maybe fn+shift+number)
<matthewblott[m]>
Hmm, didn't know that
<_jannau_>
fn + number, '-', '='
<matthewblott[m]>
Yeah, I understand. Thanks
<_jannau_>
just clearing up that shift is not needed and F11 + F12 works as well
<matthewblott[m]>
Okay, might give it a try then. I use my laptop mainly for dev work (probably like most people using Linux) so not having function keys available is a showstopper. Pretty much everything else I need appears to work.
<kyeh[m]>
<marcan> "no, it's new codecs, it's not..." <- Rip, but thanks for the info
<mps>
matthewblott[m]: fn+number to get F keys works fine for about 8-9 months
<matthewblott[m]>
Yeah thanks :-)
