it's just "using the CPU more". it's not going to have any more impact than if you used the CPU more for other reasons.
<marcan>
it's highly unlikely for these machines to die of silicon failure before they die of something else

<marcan> "it's highly unlikely for these..." <- I understand.
<bread_crumb[m]>
Do you possibly just have a quick answer on this topic:
<bread_crumb[m]>
I will definitely use volume encryption, I am just inexperienced with boot processes and ordering, such that I am not sure if without locking down both I am opening up the possibility of data tampering.
<bread_crumb[m]>
> I am not very technical when it comes to boot processes etc. but I would like to ask, if FV is set up then is locking down UBoot/GRUB necessary to have full security?

<chadmed[m]>
filevault wont encrypt the non-apfs partitions as far as im aware since it only operates on volumes, but it will prevent someone from booting the machine at all without entering a password
<chadmed[m]>
and i think the entire SSD is encrypted transparently at the hardware level by SEP
<chadmed[m]>
so for most scenarios playing around with the boot chain beyond FV shouldnt be necessary unless your goal is to properly complete the chain of trust

hello! I decided to try out asahi again, and I managed to break the installer somehow
<pitust>
> Error: -69521: Your APFS Container resize request is below the APFS-system-imposed minimal container size (perhaps caused by APFS Snapshot usage by Time Machine)
<pitust>
the installer said that the "Minimum total size" is 405.12 GB, so i entererd "410GB" (for macos)
<pitust>
but apparantly, the *minimum* is 412GB (?)
<pitust>
a bit over 412 * 10*9 bytes that is
<pitust>
just reporting the issue, i can just tell it to use 420 gigs or so
<ChaosPrincess>
i think installer counts in base-2 gigabytes, while macos counts in base-10 gigabytes
<tpw_rules>
does the installer actually count there?
<tpw_rules>
or just parse whatever diskutil says

okay, i shrank the partition (in 1tr this time, so no system freeze), but the installer doesn't like my montrey install... is there a newer macos version already?
<Dcow[m]>
is it m2 laptop?
<pitust_>
nope, the original m1
<pitust_>
mbp 13"
<pitust_>
also, in !1tr, it asked me to do partition stuff
<pitust_>
but in 1tr, it says something along the lines of "your system is too old"
<pitust_>
wait, ill do some tricks to get the terminal going as well

<pitust_>
there is also this worrying message: ./install.sh: line 6: dirname: command not found
<pitust_>
oh, i need macos >=12.3
<pitust_>
oh, if i enable "expert mode" it will get a bit further
<jannau>
pitust_: do not enable expert mode
<jannau>
which monterey version do you have installed?
<pitust_>
apparantly like 12.2
<pitust_>
honestly would have been good to know BEFORE i shrank the partitions
pitust_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<j`ey>
I thought the installer checked that before doing anything, I guess not
<jannau>
I'm a little astounded that there are still macos 12.2 installations. isn't macos super annoying with update notifications if you don't deactivate them
<clover[m]>
I know some people that make it a point to not update macos
<bluetail>
jannau if you are on asahilinux, why boot into macos? Unless you do something special such as tax work through a special program...
