<JayFoxRox[m]> can you access the macOS partition from linux or vice versa? Or is it possible to create a third partition (exFAT or something) which can be used by both?... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/MNCcCEqrNNdkglzLZIiQgSOA)

<ar> JayFoxRox[m]: apfs isn't supported on linux, and macos doesn't support any of the typical linux filesystems. exFAT is supported on both, but it's probably missing some features like executable bits and such
leitao has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<JayFoxRox[m]> but in theory, nothing prevents me from seeing the partition from both sides? so it's just a matter of finding a FS which works for me?
<ChaosPrincess> yea, and exfat seems like the best choice
<ChaosPrincess> there is some commercial driver for ext4, and you can probably coax zfs into working, but exfat is easiest

<Cy8aer[m]> On the german magazine c't they had a shared veracrypt partition between windows and linux. Can you natively format a partition to veracrypt and - does that work with macOS too?
<Cy8aer[m]> (that would be a - secure - shared solution if)

<JayFoxRox[m]> also, if I want to use that machine for work, I'll likely need webcam support (and I don't plan to bring my own USB camera).... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/JBwNVIbwQdgLYWWICIVqbYcr)
<Glanzmann> JayFoxRox[m]: Webcams don't work at the moment. I also need a webcam 8 hours a day. So I end up booting macos, and go back to Linux once I'm finsihed.

<fej487sn[m]> i don't know about hardware but i do know the webcam user interface uses a lot of machine learning algos to output. userspace stuff (mostly ml stuff it seems) is handled by the kexts (AppleH10CameraInterface.kext and AppleH13CameraInterface.kext for me, might be H11, H13, etc).
<fej487sn[m]> IspAneIPCEndPoints::enableFWIPCEP_gated - send CISP_CMD_IPC_ENDPOINT_SET2 to FW! readRingBuffer:0x4b54000, readRingLen: 0x4000, writeRingBuffer:0x4b5c000, writeRingLen: 0x4000
<fej487sn[m]> this is my log from opening up photobooth. (cmd log stream)
<JayFoxRox[m]> didn't know m1n1 could boot macOS. I had assumed I could just run some tracer on the macOS side as root. sounds like the m1n1 tracer would also need a second machine?
<j`ey> JayFoxRox[m]: yep
<j`ey> connected via USB
<fej487sn[m]> ANE is triggered anytime the webcam is (even for non-apple sw like zoom) to enhance camera output, and im not sure if it can be separated
<sven> probably it just feeds the raw output images into a complex ML model to improve it. i'd be surprised if we can't grab that raw image more easily
<fej487sn[m]> it seems ane is embedded into the fw instructions

<nik875[m]> i was trying to set up full disk encryption on asahi and managed to get all the encryption working correctly. from a second install, i chrooted in and attempted to reinstall grub with grub-install after updating configuration to allow booting from an encrypted disk. but for some reason i'm getting an error saying "efi variables are not supported on this system". how exactly does the asahi installer install grub? am i supposed to be using efi at
<nik875[m]> all? because it seems that that error means that the host system isn't using efi, even though my host system is another asahi install
<jannau> nik875[m]: see /usr/bin/update-grub - for grub-install adding '--removable' should work as well

<gplusplus[m]> I wasn't sure where to ask this. But is it at all possible to contribute to to Asahi without an M1 Mac? I have an Intel mac. But I'd like to at least give it a shot because I'm interested in learning lower level stuff. Buying an M1 Mac right now would be problematic for me at the moment.
<j`ey> gplusplus[m]: maybe in terms of cleaning up wiki/docs, but how would you test code otherwise?
tolopea1E0040[m] has quit [Quit: Client limit exceeded: 20000]
<gplusplus[m]> j`ey: Right, my same thoughts. I was just looking for a sanity check, really. I'll start with docs and keep an eye on eBay for a cheap M1... :D
