<novafacing> So what are the chances I could just uhhhh sed the Asahi installer and install on the new MacBook Air? I'm guessing...zero?
<novafacing> SOC is theoretically the same but looking at logs I don't think literally anyone has tried it yet
<nicolas17> you might be the first one to try, if it breaks you keep the pieces

<seb91nihel_> ChaosPrincess: jannau: I was able to mount the partitions with ext4fuse and save some data. I copied the vmlinuz file to the ESP partition and was able to load that file in ubuut but after that uboot complains about the missing ramdisk image. So I searched further and wasn't able to locate that ramdisk image either. So both Files are completely missing from my installation...
<jannau> seb91nihel_: is there kernel version subdirectory in /lib/modules?
<jannau> easiest option to get vmlinuz, ramdisk and modules would be to extract them from the latest base installer image from https://de.mirror.asahilinux.org/os/
<ChaosPrincess> seb91nihel_: the kernel i sent you should boot initrd-less, just skip it
novafacing has quit [Quit: Leaving]
<seb91nihel_> ChaosPrincess: just with "booti ${kernel_addr_r}" ?
<ChaosPrincess> yes
<seb91nihel_> gives me "Bad Linux ARM64 Image magic!"
<mps> seb91nihel_: https://arvanta.net/alpine/install-alpine-m1/ is guide how to install alpine linux from usb. you can read first part and use disk image to boot machine and examine state of your installation
<seb91nihel_> I'm at the point where I saved the work from that disk. I think it is hard to find out why it went so horri
<seb91nihel_> horribly wrong. So for me as a Linux beginer it will be far more easy to reinstall everything at that point.
<seb91nihel_> Was the second time I totally f*cked up an Arch install ... so maybe wait for *new distro*

<devops_dev> Does USB device mode (gadget/UDC) work from Linux? Does SuperSpeed work in that mode?
matteo has joined #asahi
<sven> it’s broken right now
<sven> still haven’t gotten around to fixing that
<sven> if you disable the phy device mode should work though
<sven> (but not in superspeed mode)

<devops_dev_> Thanks! Can I keep every PHY but one enabled to have usb3 drives?
devops_dev_ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<sven> sure, each dwc3 has its own phy
<sven> disabling it might be a bit tricky, not sure if just removing the device nodes from the fdt is enough
<devops_dev> Can it be runtime-disabled like with USB devices?
<devops_dev> just driver unbound from the node
<sven> I don’t think that’ll work because as soon as the phy is in the fdt dwc3 really wants it to be enabled
<sven> I think it’ll fail to probe otherwise
<devops_dev> got it
<devops_dev> but once you dedicate some time for fix it should be technically possible to act as a SuperSpeed device (with CDC mode)?
<sven> yes
<sven> the hardware supports superspeed in device mode
<sven> I think it even used to work at some point but then I broke it again
<devops_dev> Cool to know they did support that in their PHY. AIUI macOS doesn't have device mode and the only place that happens is the securerom DFU?
odak_ has quit [Quit: odak_]
<sven> macOS has device mode as well
leitao has joined #asahi
<devops_dev> oh rly?
<sven> it can just a bit tricky to enable it
<devops_dev> which drivers does it have? are there any docs?
<sven> if both sides support thunderbolt it will always prefer that
<sven> what worked for me was m1 -> usb3 hub -> m1 iirc
<devops_dev> but if a cable does only feature 2.0 or bad pairs so unable to get tbt?
<sven> don’t remember, it was either serial or network I think
<sven> yeah, that should also work
<devops_dev> probably network, by default it does tbt xdomain or so
<devops_dev> thanks
<sven> but then there’s still the decision which device becomes the host and which the device
<sven> just putting a hub inbetween should make it consistent
<sven> right, but tbt xdomain is different
<sven> there’s the network mode which is actually specified somewhere
<sven> and then there’s apple’s “target disk mode” which is also just tbt domain
<sven> I don’t think the m1 kernel supports that anymore though
devops_dev_ has joined #asahi
<devops_dev_> It's recoveryos doesn't for sure
<sven> that should be roughly the same kernel

<bcrumb> nicolas17: on topics on your concern from yesterday, what i usually do is simply separate out asahi updates from regular packages updates and run those first
<bcrumb> as a result of this, since we've been running wayland each upgrade has been very stable
<bcrumb> and i'm running here with a non-supported setup, essentially, and am also slacking building stuff like sddm-git regularly which i should be doing
<bcrumb> but for the record, the 300+ package upgrade that was probably arch arm migrating based on the upstream svn to git change (which i was falsely talking about here as being important, while actually archarm is, for which i dont know what theyre using) has installed properly for me, so if you arent doing anything crazy, you can just upgrade

<TheDcoder> Why does my M1 Air always drain down to 0% of battery whenever I don't use it for a month or two?
<TheDcoder> I'm properly shutting it down, not putting it to sleep or something
<TheDcoder> Is my unit just faulty? It's always been like that
<nicolas17> and you're shutting it down at 100%?
<TheDcoder> nicolas17: 50%
<TheDcoder> I know that you're not supposed to store devices at 100% charge :P
<TheDcoder> None of my phones have this issue
<nicolas17> strange, when you shut down from macOS it keeps sending offline finding bluetooth pings, but afaik that's only for 24 hours, and the power usage of that is *very* low
<TheDcoder> I can store them just fine for many months
<TheDcoder> WTF, it does that?
<TheDcoder> why?
<nicolas17> iPhones definitely do, and Macs (on macOS) do while they're asleep, I'm not entirely sure about shut down Macs though
<TheDcoder> okay, but why?
Brainium has joined #asahi
<TheDcoder> why do we even need that feature? how do you lose your phone? :P
<ChaosPrincess> you leave it unattended in a public area for 5 nanoseconds and someone nicks it
<ChaosPrincess> and iirc macs dont do that when fully off
<ChaosPrincess> only in sleep
<TheDcoder> ChaosPrincess: yeah but what's bluetooth gonna do?
<nicolas17> I only ever lost my phone inside the house and then the "play sound" feature is enough to find it
<TheDcoder> also I'm 99% sure that I have that "find my mac" feature disabled
<ChaosPrincess> TheDcoder: pings other phones, and they use their gps to report to apple what was the last location it was seen
<TheDcoder> oh, like that apple tracker thing?
<ChaosPrincess> if fmm is disabled, it shouldnt send pings
<ChaosPrincess> yes
<nicolas17> yes, it was added to iOS and Mac before the standalone AirTag device was released
<TheDcoder> didn't know devices could do that too
<TheDcoder> cool I guess...
<nicolas17> when iOS / macOS is connected to the Internet, it can report its own location that way
<nicolas17> if the device is offline, it sends AirTag-like bluetooth messages, for other nearby iPhones to anonymously report the location that way
<nicolas17> of course none of this is active when you're running Asahi
<TheDcoder> yup
<TheDcoder> I don't think I've ever shut it down in linux and put it away for an extended period of time
<TheDcoder> anyway, what's the most efficient browser?
<TheDcoder> I feel that's kind of important to prolong the battery life
<TheDcoder> Apple swears that safari is the most efficient on Mac
alyssa_ has joined #asahi
<alyssa_> lynx, maybe
<TheDcoder> ...can I use safari in Linux? O_o
<alyssa_> elinks if you like
<TheDcoder> alyssa_: I'm thinking more like traditional modern GUI browsers :P
<ChaosPrincess> TheDcoder: notice how apple always reports that safari is most efficient _when watching video_?
<alyssa_> ....dillo? (-:
<TheDcoder> The only time I used elinks was when I installed arch
<ChaosPrincess> thats cause they have hardware decode support in it
<TheDcoder> alyssa_: pretty sure that's very outdated... right?
<TheDcoder> ChaosPrincess: Oh, I see, so it isn't all-round?
<ChaosPrincess> also, a very unfortunate name :P
<alyssa_> I'm sorry I'll take my trashposting elsehwere
<alyssa_> elsewhere
<ChaosPrincess> TheDcoder: id say most of them are on par
<TheDcoder> :)
<ChaosPrincess> like, the real question is whats your backlight brightness and are you running 12 unoptimized webapps
<TheDcoder> ChaosPrincess: Are you sure? I think Chrome is more efficient because it runs V8
<ChaosPrincess> spidermonkey isnt much worse than v8
<TheDcoder> Dim and I hate webapps
<nicolas17> alyssa_: https://i.imgur.com/4EDUDlZ.jpg Linux driver when?
<TheDcoder> ChaosPrincess: Didn't they replace it with servo?
<ChaosPrincess> thats rendering engine, not javascript
<TheDcoder> Anyway, I guess the real question is, has anyone made a super-optimized ARM build of Chromium?
joshwilding2011 has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
<alyssa_> spidermonkey, spidermonkey, does whatever a spidermonkey does
<TheDcoder> Like Thorium for x86
<nicolas17> both Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, all keep coming up with new names for their fancier optimizations
<TheDcoder> nicolas17: Servo is a rust project, so definitely not just some new optimization
<nicolas17> like V8 having Crankshaft and Turbofan and SparkPlug
alyssa_ has quit []
<nicolas17> ChaosPrincess: https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/Codenames >.>
<ChaosPrincess> TheDcoder: w.r.t super optimized build - just use gentoo, add -march=native -O2 to CFLAGS, and emerge chromium
<nicolas17> does any Mac have enough RAM to build Chromium with LTO yet? :v
<TheDcoder> ChaosPrincess: no... just no
<ChaosPrincess> M2 ultra has 96
<TheDcoder> I don't have time to compile chromium, let alone use gentoo :P
<ChaosPrincess> Peak performance requires sacrifices
<TheDcoder> I'm okay with good performance
