<stintel> any ideas to fix the lockup during boot on my m2 mba 15 without nomodeset?
JoshHeyse has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<jannau> stintel: what OS are you running? asahi arch linux arm with an updated and patched linux-asahi-edge PKGBUILD?
<stintel> jannau: gentoo arm64 with asahi-wip + your dts patch for the j415
<stintel> I could try a commit in asahi-wip right after the code for this laptop landed and if that works, bisect between that and now. but would need suggestion which commit to try
<stintel> I tried both config and config-edge from pkgbuild, both freeze
JoshHeyse has joined #asahi
<jannau> I don't think that's helpful. this seems to be either an bug in how apple-dart probes or how linux probes devices. trying to bisect is not going to help and is not a pleasant/easy endeavor with the asahi kernel
<jannau> how do you generate the initrd? dracut with the gentoo config? you can try if the error goes away if you build APPLE_DART not as module but built-in
<stintel> used genkernel first, until I got the rest of the system up and running, then installed dracut with the asahi-scripts module hooks, generated an initrd with that, locks up with both initrds.
<stintel> will do a build with apple_dart builtin!

<marcan> handlerug: tar up your home partition onto external media, wipe everything, install again, restore it (and fix any permissions issues etc)
<marcan> home is not usually a separate partition by default so you can't just keep it anyway, this is the usual process on most machines
<marcan> it's basically just reinstalling from scratch, with backup+restore of /home
bisko has joined #asahi
<marcan> though I would normally recommend only restoring part of it, stuff you need and settings you know you want to keep, rather than dumping the whole thing in wholesale, since some apps could be different versions and not like it (rare but possible)
<marcan> j`ey: the panic counter is in PMC SRAM, not nvram (we clear it on normal successful boots from linux)
<marcan> (and also when you do anything with m1n1 proxyclient, otherwise after 5 or so reboots you get dumped into recovery)
jacksonchen666 has joined #asahi
<handlerug> marcan: yeah I just did that (and then forgot to actually push new commits to my dotfiles repo but that wasn't too important anyway). thanks, will keep that in mind
<marcan> j`ey: as for NVRAM, it's NOR Flash, rated for 100K P/E cycles, split across two NVRAM banks, so assuming you reboot hourly 24/7 and each boot writes to NVRAM once, that'll run out after 22 years
<marcan> most people probably don't reboot every hour, so I wouldn't worry about that
<marcan> (I might have to worry about it for the CI cluster if it gets busy, but I doubt it :p)

<dmitry> regarding NVRAM: this also means using asahi-nvram to select boot-next is fully equal to recoveryOS' own behavior?
LinuxM2 has quit []
<dmitry> Well, I see nvram is way more durable than I expected :) flash memory overall has gone pretty reliable as if we write under 100 GB per day then our 1TB SSD is going to last over 15 yrs
<dmitry> does Apple provide SSD specs (warranty TBW rating or similar) anywhere? Or is the expectancy like 1 TBW per 1 GB size?
<dmitry> I haven't seen that warranty rule like can be seen when buying SSD drives on their own. However Apple SSDs seem to be quite reliable (more if you disable swap)
JoshHeyse has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<chadmed> dmitry: they dont have specs anywhere im afraid but ive written more than 30 TB to this machine and its only reporting 1% wear/spare capacity allocation

<mort_4> has anyone else experienced weird connection issues with bluetooth earbuds (airpods specifically) in asahi?
mort_4 is now known as mort_
<mort_> I'll pair them by holding the button on the case, then they'll connect and it just works, but then a few days later they'll just stop connecting
<mort_> I have to unpair and re-pair to get it to work again
<mort_> it's probably the main thing keeping me on macos at the moment, which sounds silly but I do need bluetooth audio to work and pairing every time is really annoying

I have asahi booted and I can confirm that the mac has properly negotiated an IP via DHCP, but there are no ports open to communicate with. Without having a display, how might I go about getting SSH configured?
