I keep reading references to how the apple trackpads do palm rejection in firmware and so asahi has patched libinput to disable libinput's palm rejection
<mort_>
but as far as I can tell, there is absolutely no hint of any form of palm rejection
<mort_>
how was it determined that the Apple trackpads have palm rejection in firmware, and that this is good enough to be the only palm rejection?
<chadmed>
mort_: if i rest my palm on the touchpad and drag it around the cursor doesnt move or jump around
<ChaosPrincess>
mort_: probably by not even testing it (/s)
<ChaosPrincess>
i personally consider the palm rejection in asahi to be atrociously bad rn
<ChaosPrincess>
like, its next to impossible to not have the cursor jump when im typing
<mort_>
ChaosPrincess: that matches my experience

<mort_>
I suspect I'll have to make a hotkey to disable and enable the trackpad
<mort_>
I did that with a Dell laptop I used to have, palm rejection in libinput has never been *good*
<j`ey>
mort_: btw did you try it before the libinput was changed?
<j`ey>
or did you install after that point
<mort_>
I installed after that point
<mort_>
it's possible that it was worse before
<mort_>
or as bad at least

<marcan>
the libinput palm rejection was so broken it made 16" trackpads unusable
<marcan>
mort_: are you using tap to click or press to click? I've heard bad things about tap to click, never had any problems with phantom presses though
<marcan>
it's possible we do need palm rejection for tap to click
<mort_>
marcan: press to click, tap to click is unusable since it keeps clicking everywhere as I type. However, when I type on my 14" pro with tap to click disabled, the cursor still jumps around all over the place
<mort_>
that's especially problematic in WMs where focus follows mouse, like tiling WMs >_>
<marcan>
you don't have dwt enabled? I think it's enabled by default in KDE
<mort_>
I don't think I have dwt enabled, but that's more of a hack anyway to account for the lack of palm rejection isn't it
<jannau>
marcan: did you compare the trackpad between the 14" and 16" macbook pro? I did all calibration on the 14" one. we might report resolution and physical dimensions so that could become akward if libinput tries to determine how far an event is from the edges
<marcan>
it could be that, yeah
<marcan>
it's definitely larger on the 16"
<mort_>
I should build my own libinput and experiment a bit with how palm rejection and such works on the 14"
<mort_>
maybe look into whether palm rejection could be improved in general, maybe we can recognize when there's a silly large amount of touch points (or silly large touch area, whatever) and disable the trackpad until all touch points are removed

on macOS at least, it decides what points to ignore - I can have my whole palm on the touchpad and still use my thumb/finger to move the cursor

conspiracy theory: the reason asahi communication channels have been silent lately is because the project is busy moving reference distros from alarm to fedora asahi
<sven>
real reason: we’re all busy with our day jobs (except markan I guess) and/or other real life stuff
<mort_>
that's less spicy :(
<mort_>
ah they just announced it, fedora asahi will be the flagship distro for asahi
Dementor has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<ellyq>
not surprised, discourse is a PITA to deploy
Dementor has joined #asahi
<ellyq>
and fedora seems like a sane choice, shipping up-to-date packages without breaking stuff, maintainers are very friendly etc

I just noticed rocky linux is sponsoring the flocktofedora thing... that's interesting, I wouldn't expect Rocky and Red Hat to have the best relationship atm
