Not sure if this is the best place to post this, I'm trying to get Lina's M1 GPU driver to work on my M1 MBA. I have CONFIG_DRM_APPLE, enabled in my Kernel config and compiled and updated n1n1, DTB, and MESA. Will U-Boot work, or do I have to do a direct kernel payload from m1n1?

Hello. Anyone in here? Sorry, first time using IRC.

hi]
<caden>
Are you able to help me with something?
<caden>
I was wondering if there is a way for me to upgrade the Asahi kernel. I just recently installed Asahi on my M1 MacBook Air
<tpw_rules>
sudo pacman -Syu should upgrade everything that can be upgraded
<tpw_rules>
but the kernel has not had a new official release in a couple months
<caden>
I am running Fedora actually. I suppose that is probably unofficial, though I found it through the Asahi docs.
<caden>
Okay
<tpw_rules>
i don't recall who is maintaining the fedora stuff, sorry
<caden>
I have noticed the screen brightness is either on or off. I also noticed the GPU may not be accelerated. I know GPU support is only in its infancy. Will these things update with a regular upgrade?
<tpw_rules>
#asahi-alt is the channel for alternative distros, you can use /join #asahi-alt to connect your cleint to it
<caden>
Ok. Thank you!
<tpw_rules>
yes, once they are ready. then of course whomever maintains the fedora stuff will have to package the updates
<caden>
Sounds good. I hit them up in an email as the installer still uses Fedora 25
<caden>
*35
<caden>
Thomas something...
<tpw_rules>
glanzmann? haven't seen him around in a while i don't think
<caden>
I believe so. It seems to me it may be going unmaintained. Hopefully he will see my email. I asked him if he could update things when Fedora 37 rolls around.
<caden>
I'm honestly impressed it runs so well without GPU acceleration. Asahi team's work has blown my mind

I have installed Asahi on Mac Mini m1
<gausus>
Is there a way to remove all apple partitions and use the full disk just for linux?
<sven>
you’ll have to keep at least the stub APFS partition around
<sven>
and right now removing macOS isn’t recommended in case you need to update the firmware

to be more precise, you must keep the first partition (it contains system firmware and some other things), the last partition (system recovery), and the stub partition (contains per-os firmware, and other boot parts).
<ChaosPrincess>
but again, its a good idea to keep a copy of macos around.

marcan: FYI, I've tested similar (but no identical) C++ compilation setups on Mac OS vs Asahi Linux and under Mac OS the build is about 15% slower. About the setups: both using Clang with libc++ but different versions of Clang (14 vs ~13ish) and different targets/libc (Linux vs Darwin).
<marcan>
borisk: that makes sense, mostly because macOS is quite a bit worse at VM/FS stuff than Linux AIUI. lots of people report better performance under Linux than macOS.

rg: if the question is 'why dont I get it on update?', it's because it's in the asahi-dev repo
<rg>
the config file checksums were updated, but dont match the new config
<rg>
is it safe?
<rg>
i was planning on just manually installing the PKGBUILD
<j`ey>
should be fine, not sure why the checksum is wrong
<rg>
i didn't realise there was dev repo thats really what i'm looking for thanks

now aware of dev repo, unsurprisingly 6.1.rc2 doesn't boot on asahi repo

Is there a way I can switch VT on a laptop with a Touch Bar without needing to find a USB keyboard? The VT I'm stuck on isn't running any process, so I can't just run a shell command to switch.

I thought I'd tried that, but I think I had mixed up alt and super because of non-Mac muscle memory :)

that guide is basically 'install arch and use it as live cd' :P
<j`ey>
:)
<ChaosPrincess>
if you want full direct install - crosscompile the asahi kernel from another machine, or build it inside a linux vm under macos, then merge it together with arm stage3, boot it all from usb first then migrate to inteernal nvm
