so far, my asahi install has been much more stable than my macos install ever was (macos would kernel panic on a ~weekly basis)

that's frankly bizarre
<tpw_rules>
the last time my mac kernel panicked was two laptops ago and only then when i dropped it
<chadmed>
ive never had a macos kpanic on an actual apple machine except for when playing around in the m1n1 hv
<chadmed>
before that, the last time wouldve been my phenom ii hackintosh

I also had constant kernel panics on Mac. Eventually I learned that it was caused by awaking from sleep while running a vm in Parallels. I have another coworked with an M1 who had the same problem and neither of us have the issue anymore now that we stopped using Parallels

I'm correct in assuming that macOS is built for Apple Silicon such that it's completely incompatible with other ARM SoCs, right? Someone is trying to tell me that the security processor is the only quirk about mac hardware that makes it awkward to run macOS on other hardware, but I think they're thinking of x86_64 macOS and I was specifically talking about the ARM build of macOS being unable to run on other ARM hardw
<elvishjerricco>
Not that the security processor has anything to do with running x86_64 macOS on non-mac hardware...
<chadmed>
that's patently false, apple has a bespoke interrupt controller that is incompatible with the ARM GIC
<elvishjerricco>
yea that's the first thing that came to mind
<elvishjerricco>
in theory apple could have a driver for other interrupt controllers tucked away in the kernel, but why on earth would they?
<chadmed>
the XNU kernel apple ship for use in VMs is an entirely different, since Hypervisor.framework exposes a generic AArch64 machine
<chadmed>
they do, but its only built for the VM kernel
<elvishjerricco>
ah, that's a good point
<elvishjerricco>
so they have a whole different build of macOS for VMs?
<elvishjerricco>
Would it be even remotely feasible to run that on other ARM hardware?
<chadmed>
i cant tell you for certain but probably not

elvishjerricco: yes, the macOS VM kernel runs in a VM on other ARM hardware, people tried that way way back
<marcan>
however, you're only going to get single user text mode unless you implement a Metal paravirtualized GPU, so it's not very useful if you want macOS
Etrien has joined #asahi

marcan: macos for arm doesn't implement anything like a basic framebuffer output, or anything like that?
<marcan>
the kernel has a framebuffer alright, but the GUI requires GPU acceleration and there is no software renderer for ARM as far as I know (or it is disabled)

just noticed 'macsmc-hid: Failed to locate of_node [id: -1]' in my dmesg, anyone else seeing that?

getting it for reboot too: 'macsmc-reboot: Failed to locate of_node [id: -1]', so maybe a generic issue with the dts, but it still seems to load/probe

seems to be from drivers/mfd/mfd-core.c

also receiving " cpu cpu0: apple_soc_cpufreq_init: failed to get cluster info: -2" - all eight CPU's on an M1 Mini. Marcan says to update the DTs (DTS/DTB's). When I recompile the kernel (Debian) this is done automatically as far as I am aware. Everything looks fresh in arch/arm64/boot/dts/apple. Am I missing something here?
<j`ey>
Ry_Darcy: you need to put the new dtbs in m1n1 and replace it on the EFI partition

I did this last week and I ended up with a boot.bin in /boot/efi/m1n1/ that "only" supported a 2K monitor. I had to do an echo display= ... on this file to enable 4K.

yeah if you enabled any settings like that you have to be sure to reenable them

write a script ;)

Hi
<Adelphos>
what do you think will happen if I remove the Apple APFS partitions ?
<Adelphos>
since I am only using Asahi
<tpw_rules>
bad things
<tpw_rules>
they are needed for the machine itself and asahi to boot
<tpw_rules>
you could theoretically remove the main macos partition but then you can't ever upgrade the machine again cause asahi doesn't support that yet
<tpw_rules>
(well you could if you completely erased it to put macos back on)
<Adelphos>
tpw_rules: ok thanks!

I think you need to gzip uboot first

otherwise m1n1 doesnt know how big the uboot payload is, so cant read the variables
