Hi, it it possible to run (Fedora) Asahi in a virtual machine under Linux?
<nicolas17>
why? just use normal Fedora
<ar>
pkal: the changes asahi makes vs "vanilla" fedora aren't applicable for virtual machines
delsol has joined #asahi
<pkal>
nicolas17: I wanted to see if it would be easier to download and run an iso to do cross compilation, but I don't claim that it is a good idea
<nicolas17>
would the virtual machine be in x86 hardware?
<j`ey>
pkal: you can do that with the "normal" fedora iso
<nicolas17>
you can run arm64 fedora in a CPU emulator in x86 hardware, it doesn't have to be "fedora asahi"
<nicolas17>
the only difference in asahi is supporting Apple proprietary hardware that a virtual machine or emulator won't have anyway
<pkal>
Of course, my hope was just that I wouldn't have to bother with installing and setting up a cross-compilation toolchain.
<pkal>
nicolas17: that makes sense, the idea is getting more and more stupid the more I think about it ^^
<nicolas17>
yeah, if you use arm64 fedora then it won't be cross-compiling :)
<pkal>
I forgot to mention, what I meant with corss-compiling is that I am trying to build something for a M1 Mac running macOS.
<pkal>
So it is not just the architecture, but also the OS/executable format that I am "crossing" over
<nicolas17>
wellll running fedora asahi won't help you create a mac executable

the regular clang compiler on arm64 fedora *might* be able to produce macOS object files? but you'll still need to get a linker and extract the macOS SDK from Xcode etc.

<nicolas17>
building clang such that it can run on x86 while producing arm64 binaries (ie. a cross compiler) is the *easier* part of all this :D

Hello guys, I was wondering if anyone ever had that log as i searched and can't find it "ALSA lib confmisc.c:165:(snd_config_get_card) Cannot get card index for AppleJ313"
<Madokaiii>
I'm on Macbook Air M1
<Madokaiii>
nvm it shows j313 in the log
<nicolas17>
madokaiii: fedora? do you have everything up-to-date?
<Madokaiii>
Yes and yes
<Madokaiii>
i have personnally checked every package and compared to the github page about dependencies
<Madokaiii>
and sudo dnf --refresh upgrade
<Madokaiii>
fedora gnome though

<kidplayer666>
still odd
<Madokaiii>
Update : I didn't mention it here but I must've uninstalled and reinstalled fedora a billion times, speakers never worked on my M1 Air
<kidplayer666>
very very odd
<kidplayer666>
what fedora version
<kidplayer666>
39, rught?
<Madokaiii>
yes
<Madokaiii>
i can send logs ?
KxCORP has quit []
<Madokaiii>
im all out of options tbh
<kidplayer666>
use a pastbin to send them
<j`ey>
madokaiii: use a pastebin and upload the result of asahi-diagnose

madokaiii, no sure if relevant, but with Fedora 39 on my Framework laptop, the microphone never worked. When tried to record sound, it was 90 percent static and 10 percent human voice. With Ubuntu, the microphone works great.
<Madokaiii>
https://pastebin.com/RfDjyhBP I must say though tas2764 and speakersafetyd never woke up on their own on a fresh install after downloading all package and rebooting
<Madokaiii>
greentail : not sure how to install any other distribution and I prefer fedora though so idk
<Madokaiii>
I believe the microphone works here
<j`ey>
madokaiii: you mean that 'systemctl status speakersafetyd' shows speakersafetyd not running?
<Madokaiii>
yes it never has
<Madokaiii>
it refuses to launch cause it can't see any soundcard
<Madokaiii>
snd_get_config_card failed cause snd_ctl_open ENODEV no device found
<Madokaiii>
and then panics

not having mesa or asahi-fwextract installed seems weird
<Madokaiii>

hi, where can i install the arch based asahi version?
<Juest>
and, if i install, how do i make sure its independent instead of replacing macos? this is not my macbook air m1
<nicolas17>
that happens by default, you have to go out of your way to remove macOS
<Juest>
i see, how much space should i allocate?
<Juest>
i hope its fine that i prefer chat
