<c10l> hi I'm running through the microVMs for gaming blog post but the first time I try to start the VM it errors saying /dev/(dri|snd)/* don't exist. they do though, so I'm not sure what exactly is wrong here. anyone able to help me out? I thought it could be SELinux but the blog post says I shouldn't need to touch that.

jacksonchen666 has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<chadmed> c10l: are you using the versions from the COPR? that error comes from the VM itself and refers to the virtio devices, not your host system's dri/snd
<c10l> chadmed: yeah at this point I'm literally just copy-pasting the commands from the blog (https://sinrega.org/2023-10-06-using-microvms-for-gaming-on-fedora-asahi/). :D I'm not familiar with krunvm which makes it hard to troubleshoot. just wondering if there's something quick I could try out.
<c10l> otherwise I'll have to educate myself a bit more on this first :)
<chadmed> those errors are most likely because the virtualised kernel (libkrunfw) doesnt have virtio-snd and virtio-gpu. if the version of libkrunfw that ended up installed came from the main fedora repos, this can happen
<chadmed> there is a flag you can pass to dnf to prefer the COPR but i cant remember what it is
<c10l> cool, thanks! that gives me something to search for and places to look.

<chadmed> madokaiii: im honestly not quite sure. i find it incredibly odd that there are no sound cards available at all via alsa. something weird is going on there
<chadmed> the modules are loaded but i cant see any of the expected output in your kernel messages...

<c10l> kotleni2: I quickly tried a couple games. Superliminal didn't run. Portal ran and the performance seemed fine (I would guess at or close to 60 FPS). It was a bit stuttery but the main issue is that the game wouldn't take mouse/trackpad input if the character was moving so it's unplayable.

<RoundDuckKira> is it possible to install it
<RoundDuckKira> I want to be able to compile ZFS support so I can make a Void system in another partition that uses ZFS
<RoundDuckKira> since this is just a packaging issue I thought I'd ask here, idk why kernel devel conflicts with the asahi metapackage

<cy8aer> or look at "/usr/share/grub/default/grub"
<RoundDuckKira> nothing there
<RoundDuckKira> these are ubuntu norms
<RoundDuckKira> fedora makes its grub default thing in the installer
<RoundDuckKira> whether it is calamares or andaconda
<RoundDuckKira> also the grub file I have now looks like that
<RoundDuckKira> but it's not finding any kernels
<RoundDuckKira> :(
<cy8aer> Ah, yes. fedora does this grubby thingy.
<michaelrose> seems like one route would be to simply make a vm go through installation and inspect the file contents. One can just delete the vm thereafter
georgemoody has joined #asahi
<RoundDuckKira> cy8aer, I can't find anything there to make a new /etc/default/grub
<RoundDuckKira> michaelrose, the problem is you can't make a VM of Asahi Fedora Remix
<cy8aer> They change the kernel line with grubby and therefor grub2-mkconfig ignores this line in newer RHEL-like distros.
<RoundDuckKira> wait wat
<michaelrose> RoundDuckKira: hmm is the grub likely to be different than fedora then?
<RoundDuckKira> I assumed so
<RoundDuckKira> looks like maybe not tho when grubby does that
