hm.. thats weird.. anyone find Chromium not using the right keyboard layout in Sway? Maybe this isnt just an Asahi thing 🤔
<j`ey>
oh, it may be a software issue, from another headline it sounded like it was for the apple silicon directly, but it seems to affect other devices too

<ar>
j`ey: tl;dr: gpus don't zero the allocated/freed memory?
<ar>
or something funnier than that?
<j`ey>
ar: that's what it seems to be, yes
<j`ey>
I skimmed it, after it didn't seem as intersting as I first hoped
<ar>
i vaguely remember seeing something similar utilizing webgpu/webgl to recover screen contents
<ar>
similar as in also relying on memory not being zeroed

j`ey: lina picked out that exact non-memset issue in the isp driver 3 months ago. I trust it was done for agx. also I dunno why the article is highlighting the gpu hw when it's clearly a software issue

hello everyone.. I'm having trouble installing asahi on my mac, is this the right channel to ask?
jacksonchen666 has joined #asahi
<ar>
yes
<ref>
brand new system, did the minimum possible in order to open a shell and begin the installation.. resize of disk went well, installation began... and then it starts to connect to apple to create some restore thing.. updates-cdn.apple.com, which fails, it retries 10 times.. and it ends with "exceeded max tries downloading data" .. I am a Mac newbie, so I'm not entirely sure what it's looking for here.. can I skip it?

ref: did you configure internet access in the installer?
rvalue has joined #asahi
<ref>
ar : for the mac installer, yes.. not the installation script
<ref>
it did download things
<ref>
but the restore step att restore.cdn-apple.com, what is it looking for there? some sort of backup? I haven't done that steo,, so can I skip it?
<leio>
do you mean updates.cdn-apple.com/*/fullrestores/* ?
<ref>
leio, yes, that's the url it's failing on
<leio>
it needs that, it's the firmware that it'll be putting in the APFS
<nicolas17>
ref: Apple's CDN can be weird sometimes
<nicolas17>
sometimes it's extremely slow, and retrying makes it hit a different server which works normally

I seem to have hit a display issue.. I only have a single monitor, but 2 machines, so I have to unplug one to plug another machine in.. but the mac mini seems to go dark when I do this. nothing will wake up the screen from what I can tell - any ideas? I believe I saw something similar with the screensaver too
<ref>
nicolas17, ah, perhaps I bumped into that then. thanks

ref: are you saying if you unplug the monitor from the mac mini and plug it back in, the monitor then stays black?
bruse has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<ref>
nicolas17, yes, exactly.. so far I've only managed to get it going again by a reboot
<ref>
and that's fricken annoying

janneg: unfortunately the last replacement has HDMI trouble after dpms off as well afterall, must've just been lucky at first (been in macOS for work as of late, so hadn't used it in linux much after that initial luck); spent 5+ minutes in a replug cycle again; also similar to ref's case I suppose
<leio>
ref: you'll need to re-plug it a bunch then (or reboot)
