been playing using asahi as my main os now for a few weeks, noticed power stuff when compared to mac os. been a couple of times i've needed to charge my device cause it was dead from having the lid closed, power draining faster than i would expect normally etc.
<monthebiff>
sure it's pretty normal / expected atm
<monthebiff>
but is there a recommened power config for battery use?
<monthebiff>
recommended*
<chadmed>
monthebiff: which device do you have
<monthebiff>
m1 pro mbp
<monthebiff>
16gb of ram if it makes a difference
<chadmed>
all pro/max/ultra devices have known idle pm issues. we dont know why but its on the list of things to look at
<monthebiff>
oh thats good to know

is there a summary of what we do know about it?

tldr certain parts of the clusters are _supposed_ to shut down Automatically(tm) when all the cores in the cluster are in WFI, but for whatever reason that's not happening
<chadmed>
iirc we cant really do anything else about it until we sort out the psci mess
<monthebiff>
moar. i want to read all of the things :P

and the hibernate vs sleep options in the kde settings panels... they all mean sleep? (hibernate not implemented?)

monthebiff: hibernate is not implemented, and sleep is really s2idle (userspace processes are not given any CPU cycles), not "actual" sleep
<chadmed>
s2idle is perfectly fine... assuming the soc is not misbehaving. unfortunately the pro/max/ultra socs are misbehaving

but implementing proper suspend requires fixing a bunch of power management things, and by the time they're fixed they make proper suspend less relevant because power consumption got better anyway
<chadmed>
the base m1 and m2 devices already have comparable suspended battery life to macos

Does anyone know how to get Zotero working? I'd like to use it for school reasons (clicking a button in firefox to save articles is important for me, I don't want to be handwriting BibTeX all the time)
<iex>
Hello. I'm having some trouble with my M1 pro. Since I've installed asashi, I got the there's an issue with the firmware screen. So I loaded the firmware with another mac. Downloaded both mac and asashi on it.
<iex>
And now the battery life is really bad
<iex>
And for asashi every process takes up a lot of RAM
<iex>
Battery when fully charged gets discharged in about 3 hours.
<iex>
Any advice on how to proceed. Should I delete everything and get the firmware on it once more?
<kode54>
since I delight in adding delays to releases, how long until M4 support

iex: in case you check the logs, is that battery life in asahi or macos?
<chadmed>
on pro/max/ultra socs power management is not fully done yet, so battery life is not fantastic under asahi. that doesnt affect macos though

asahi doesnt do anything to macos, so it could be the battery itself
