<monthebiff>
if i was to start looking out for a new device... whats high / low down on the mac/ asahi experience list?

<j`ey>
monthebiff: in terms of current support?
<monthebiff>
yeh how recent a machine, fewest odd bugs etc.
<j`ey>
theyre all the same basically
<j`ey>
(apart from the pro/max idle power stuff that was talked about the other day)
<monthebiff>
yeh any other stuff?
<j`ey>
imac speakers dont work
<monthebiff>
interesting
<monthebiff>
would be a laptop though
<chaos_princess>
Imo: any m1/m2 works, but i'd avoid imacs and "old-style" mbp/mba
<monthebiff>
old-style?
<chadmed>
with the old chassis
<chadmed>
they were basically surplus intel macbook chassis that they had in the warehouse and shoved an arm logic board in
<monthebiff>
... like im 5. my memory on mbp chassis is failing me.
<chadmed>
the new style airs all look like the 14" and 16" pros
<monthebiff>
and whats the issue with asahi and the old chassis?
<chadmed>
anything that has a notch for the webcam is good
<monthebiff>
or is it just a 'its a thing'
<chadmed>
nothing asahi-specific theyre just old and shitty. the 13" pro sucks and has a touchbar
<monthebiff>
ah touchbar era
<monthebiff>
*horrific flashbacks*
<monthebiff>
lets remove function keys and escape keys.
<monthebiff>
thanks apple
<j`ey>
im assuming monthebiff was going to upgrade to M2 anyway
chadmed has quit [Quit: Konversation terminated!]
chadmed has joined #asahi
<monthebiff>
id upgrade as *modern* as i could
<j`ey>
which is M2
<monthebiff>
give or take cost/ performance between max/pro/ultra varieties
<monthebiff>
also... m2 battery stuff vs m2 pro battery stuff?
<chadmed>
unless youre doing heaps of dev work or gaming the higher socs really arent worth it at all
<chadmed>
split the difference on more ram in a 15" air
<monthebiff>
im happy on my m1mbp for now... but at some point ill want an upgrade
<monthebiff>
was tempted by the m3 air... yay ray tracing (correct?) but then was waiting on asahi support etc.
<j`ey>
well if youre happy, yes just wait for M3 or M4 :)
<chadmed>
RTRT is probably not high on alyssa's to do list :p
<monthebiff>
aww please
<monthebiff>
for me
<chaos_princess>
Imo, m3/m4 gpu is at least 4months away
<monthebiff>
no rush
<chaos_princess>
(this is "at least", not "it will happen then")
<monthebiff>
*sits patiently*
<monthebiff>
much as id like the air for backpacking... probably would be a pro again... want the games :P
<chaos_princess>
I have a m1pro mbp, probably my favourite laptop i ever owned.
<chaos_princess>
(Granted, the rest of them usually werent the best machines out there :P)
<monthebiff>
yeh its really good
<monthebiff>
whenever anyones asking about upgrading from intel windows world im like, pick any device with an m something chip in it.
<monthebiff>
m1 pro is really good bang for buck as an upgrade still
<monthebiff>
someone once said he liked the touch bar though and i nearly threw my laptop at his head
<chadmed>
my 15" air is the best machine ive ever owned full stop, laptop or otherwise
<chaos_princess>
Hah
<monthebiff>
what chips in the air?
<chadmed>
m2
<monthebiff>
and you ever ran it next to the m1 pro/ mbp? hows it feel in the smaller size/ fans etc?
<chadmed>
yeah i have a 14" pro with an m1 pro in it
<chadmed>
(and an m2 pro mini and m2 max studio but who cares)
<chadmed>
the air is better than the pro in almost every way
<monthebiff>
really?
<monthebiff>
wow
<chadmed>
lighter, better battery life, i did a better job tuning the speakers
<monthebiff>
think it would be really nice from a backpacking perspective
<monthebiff>
but
<monthebiff>
editing videos/ games
<monthebiff>
sorry *playing games not editin
<chadmed>
only downsides for me are that it gets much hotter to the touch due to no active cooling and the screen is only 60 hz but that's really mooted by the fact that we dont do VRR on asahi yet anyway
<monthebiff>
... does hotter to the touch turn into thermal throttling?>
<chadmed>
gaming laptops have always been a meme and the m2 is honestly fine for video editing even in software
<chadmed>
it does yes, its designed to thermally throttle
<chaos_princess>
Unless you do nonsense like building 30 versions of nodejs to bisect a bug, air is probably fine
<chadmed>
but only when im absolutely hammering it with kernel builds etc
<chadmed>
daily use its no warmer to touch than any other surface in the room
<chaos_princess>
(and the gaming laptop copypasta exists for a reason :P)
<monthebiff>
... vague memory of npm and node in work
<chadmed>
chaos_princess: only a mad(wo)man would do something like that :p
<chaos_princess>
I never claimed to be sane :P
<chadmed>
some sort of... calamitous royal
<monthebiff>
i keep dipping my toes back into software dev stuff... but i was mostly php web dev stuff
<monthebiff>
still
<chadmed>
look i run gentoo on all my machines
<chadmed>
the m2 air handles it like a champion
<monthebiff>
loving running docker on asahi directly instead of in the vm
<chaos_princess>
Air will handle most sw dev.
<monthebiff>
figured it would
<chaos_princess>
Esp php/js/etc
<monthebiff>
tempting... id lose the sd card slot... and the hdmi...
<j`ey>
HDMI is currently the only way to do external screens
<chaos_princess>
Sd card slot is overrated, a type c dock is effectively mandatory for apple laptops, and those usually come with sd slots.
<chadmed>
sd card slot has only caused issues on the desktop, totally not worth it
<monthebiff>
the only time i've used hdmi so far (on asahi) is for doom eternal... but i had really weird lag between my controller (bluetooth) and the on screen video.
<monthebiff>
and then i went back to just using my mbp display
<monthebiff>
sd card slot caused issues?
<monthebiff>
i've got a couple of cameras that use microsd cards... id need to figure out a workflow for them if im not using an sd slot
<chadmed>
yeah on the desktops pcie power management was causing it to serror
<monthebiff>
hmmm... the storage on the airs is very low isn't it :P (base spec)
<chadmed>
yeah i got a 512gb one

dunno, depends on what you use your device for. in the past I had bad experiences with an older air, where after installing a bunch of stuff even on macos it was having trouble with cooling. plus prefer some extra ram and storage for vms and whatnot just in case. if it would be upgradeable, could always add it alter, but alas...

* Halian
has never used a touch bar Mac
<wunky>
Halian: my last one was a touchbar mac. would not recommend
<Halian>
Oof
<nicolas17>
what I don't like about it is how much it has been neglected even by Apple
<nicolas17>
the new macOS System Settings doesn't show anything in it (pretty sure the old one had a back button)
pb17 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<nicolas17>
Xcode documentation doesn't let you go back via touchbar nor trackpad gestures (which every web browser supports)
<wunky>
my issue with it is that it would routinely freeze up and require a reboot of the entire os to get my escape key back
<wunky>
however running nyan cat on it did have its novelty... for about 5 minutes
<nicolas17>
they later brought back a hardware esc key, removing it from the touchbar
<nicolas17>
and on Apple Silicon, it's no longer controlled by an entirely separate OS with rube goldberg communication

the model i had was the 2017 one. so intel, pretty shit battery life, heats up, butterfly keyboard, touchbar, bad bezel
<wunky>
basically the opposite of the new arm64 models :)
<wunky>
i am quite happy with my m3 max macbook pro now, though
<nicolas17>
butterfly keyboard? sounds like the touchbar was the least of your problems :D
<wunky>
that whole laptop was one big problem, tbh
<chaos_princess>
as also a previous user of that kind of machine - good riddance.
