[haiku/website] waddlesplash 01ddd36 - March Activity & Contract report.
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash i need it in BootLoaderTest, but gcc doesn't find it when it includes AutoDeleter.h
<waddlesplash>
Anarchos: strange, as HandleDeleter should be in there
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash i am trying to upgrade the src/test/boot/loader BootLoaderTest
<waddlesplash>
not sure if that thing actually has any value anymore :/
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash well my haiku-netboot.tgz refuses to be recognized by tarfs during a net boot. I thought it could help to maintain the unit test !?
<waddlesplash>
probably not
<waddlesplash>
hmm, actually I don't know
<waddlesplash>
what's the error from tarfs?
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash something about a block <null>, i could not remember (though if we have logs on the channel, i pasted it yesterday)
<Anarchos>
hmmm i pasted it on #haiku-fr
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash this one : tarfs: didn't read whole block: <NULL>
<waddlesplash>
well, that's interesting
<waddlesplash>
probably, reading the source of that message will indicate what's going on I guess
<Anarchos>
but i have a log from tftp : haiku-nbetboot.tgz successfully received, with the correct size mentionned.
<Anarchos>
if (zStream.avail_in != 0 && status != Z_STREAM_END) dprintf("tarfs: didn't read whole block: %s\n", zStream.msg);
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash i think my netboot is not built with the correct configure options ,
<waddlesplash>
probably you should print "status" and determine what it is
<waddlesplash>
must be something other than END
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash and i could'nt build target haiku-image : no space left on device, though i build on x86_gcc2 and my haiku git repo is clean
<waddlesplash>
I think your configure options are fine, at least wrt. the loader
<waddlesplash>
Anarchos: are you building with a profile?
<waddlesplash>
i.e. @minimum-*, @nightly-*
<Anarchos>
i compiled with the instructino on the net boot guide : TARGET_PLATFORM=pxe_ia32 jam haiku_loader.pxe_ia32 haiku-netboot-archive
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash for haiku-image, no as it is 'jam haiku-image' in the net boot guide (indeed i am aware this instrution must be a bit deprecated now...)
<waddlesplash>
yeah, it is
<waddlesplash>
likely you can increase the image size with a UserBuildConfig option?
<Anarchos>
anyway i think it has nothing to do with my pxe loader unable to use haiku-netboot.tgz
<waddlesplash>
yes, probably you are correct.
<waddlesplash>
Anarchos: I think TARGET_PLATFORM is no longer needed. you can just do jam haiku_loader.pxe_ia32
<waddlesplash>
but it's likely harmless
<Anarchos>
i wll try with @minimum-raw for build a low footprint haiku.image
<Anarchos>
for the haiku-netboot, i am lost

<waddlesplash>
Anarchos: like I suggested above, change the loader to also print "status" in that dprintf, not just zStream.msg
<waddlesplash>
then determine what the status is. maybe it's an error, or maybe it's something very silly
<Anarchos>
waddlesplash ok thanks for the advice

waddlesplash do you think i could do a pull request to remove bootloadertest ?
<waddlesplash>
it may still be useful...
<waddlesplash>
I haven't looked at it at all
<Anarchos>
i add to trick a bit the jamfile, cause some files like bplustree or vfs have been moved in the past
<Anarchos>
so this test doesn't compile anymore

oof has anyone else noticed the latest nightlies are essentially lagging so bad on virtualbox that they are unusable
<Anarchos>
WildmanProductions no, i use only bare metal, never used virtualbox
<B2IA>
(AGMS) No, haven't tried the latest. Sometimes 32 bit or 64 bit works better.
<nephele>
Probaly not, most devs don't use virtualbox
<nephele>
(mostly because it is not pleasent to work with... and it's oracle...)

<B2IA>
(AGMS) And sometimes on real hardware the timer system breaks and doesn't tick, so mouse moves or other interrupt generating activity is needed to get it to do anything.
<B2IA>
(AGMS) Also, are you using 1 cpu in VirtualBox? That's much faster.

oof that seems counter-intuitive ;o

waddlesplash first error status is Z_OK, second one is Z_BUF_ERROR "buffer error'

Hey jadedcrtl!
<Sabex>
Has anyone done a UEFI install?
<_Dario_>
not me. Old BIOS here. But I'm sure there is lot of posts about it on the forums.
<Sabex>
I grok installing the bootloader, but does anyone know if it just locates the Haiku partition and boots off of that, or does it need some sort of ini file alongside the bootloader?
<Sabex>
From the docs on the Haiku site, it seems trivial
