Spaceboy1010: it's quite responsive as a rule. crashes are getting better, it's getting rather rare to run into any on systems that can boot successfully.
<Spaceboy1010>
Ok

Spaceboy1010 i do, it is very usable stability wise. pretty much never get corruption these days. The main problem is that you have to be very inventive with the way you use browsers.
<Spaceboy1010>
Ok
<AlienSoldier>
you might even get more degree of liberty if you use 64bit because of the Falkon Browser (i don't as i am still in 32bit land)
<Spaceboy1010>
I'm considering installing it on an old Gateway computer.

It is the best on old machine
<Cian>
just not *too* old. How old is the Gateway?
<Spaceboy1010>
2014
<Cian>
the brand left here at least a decade ago but I think its lasted longer elsewhere
<Cian>
2014 should be fine
<Spaceboy1010>
It's a Gateway SX-2110G
<AlienSoldier>
hehe, old for me is under 600Mhz PIII
xet7 has joined #haiku
<AlienSoldier>
I think one could cover the entire earth if all the mag ads for Gateway were kept.
<Cian>
you might have some quirks with audio but it looks like it should work otherwise.
<Cian>
the gateway logo was still on the side of their assembly plant here a year or so ago. closed when I was a kid
matt2 has left #haiku [#haiku]
<AlienSoldier>
was the plant painted with holsteen motif?
<Cian>
it barely survived in to that era so no

<Cian>
hah, the outline of the logo is STILL there
<AlienSoldier>
another instance where our browsers fail
<Cian>
can't see what NIC is in that PC as the spec sheet won't load in my non-haiku browser
<AlienSoldier>
ho, otter finnaly loaded it
<Cian>
but most 2014 hw works.
<Spaceboy1010>
ok
<AlienSoldier>
otter: 1 web+: 0 on that one
<Spaceboy1010>
Will there ever be something like OTVDM for Haiku so we can run 16-bit BeOS programs on 64-bit Haiku?
<PulkoMandy>
there are no 16 bit BeOS programs, BeOS was always 32bit
<Spaceboy1010>
Huh, i always heard that they were 16 bit
<Cian>
there is no WoW-equivalent to run 32 bit BeOS programmes on 64 bit Haiku (Currently) which is what you may have heard
<Spaceboy1010>
ok
<Cian>
but BeOS was always 32bit, Pentium class minimum on Intel and gen-2 PowerPC (603+)
<nephele>
HoH :)

there are device IDs for Pentium Overdrive 486 drop-ins in Pulse but I have a suspicion that you'd have severe trouble with the other required HW to get even R3 going there.
<Cian>
but it will run on a Pentium 75 anyway. exceptionally ancient irrelevance
<PulkoMandy>
I almost added code to Pulse to use an older version of the Intel logo for these old machines
<Spaceboy1010>
gtg, thanks!
<Cian>
the better chipsets of the era supported up to 512MB so you might be able to get the slowest booting post-PM Haiku instance ever

Perhaps he was mixing BeOS and OS/2. OS/2 allowed to run win 3.11 app natively if i remember.

you'd likely be better served just using R5 on PII and lower class machines. Haiku won't run well enough to give you much extra functionality; and browsers are going to be mostly out anyway
<Cian>
better USB support is about all you'd gain

PIII class machines you've got USB, ACPI may make it generally work better, there may be better driver support etc
<AlienSoldier>
USB2 comming from openbeos of couser
<Cian>
I need to dig up some ancient builds to get those various bits that can be glued back to R5. You could pull the entire IDE support over also I think albeit it broke a lot of stuff that also needed replacing. diskprobe, the CD player and burner apps etc

Hi waddlesplash
<waddlesplash>
hello
<Vidrep_64>
I've been doing a bunch of read/writes to NTFS drives lately. Your fix is working well
<Vidrep_64>
You probably thought I was going to give you bad news, eh? :)
<waddlesplash>
It tends to happen more often than not :-p
<Vidrep_64>
No doubt

I cought a bit of the discussion earlier today about WebKit. Who's going to take over, since PulkoMandy seems uninterested in maintaining it?

<waddlesplash>
maybe me, if Falkon doesn't work out
