hello
<augiedoggie>
woof
<blehmeh98>
I'm using Haiku OS on an old Thinkpad X230, and the OS itself seems to work perfectly. Wifi works out of the box, stuff runs smooth, etc
<blehmeh98>
However, I tried downloading and installing Milky Tracker, and it won't run. When I open it, it shows the slick splash screen, fades to a black screen, and stays there until I hover my mouse over it
<blehmeh98>
When I hover my mouse over it, it crashes with an error dialog box
<augiedoggie>
i don't see any open issues about milkytracker at the haikuports repository
<augiedoggie>
have you tried running it from the Terminal to see if it prints anything useful?
pch has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<blehmeh98>
I'll try running it in a terminal, how do I find the command or executable for it?
<blehmeh98>
brb, gonna reboot real quick

<HaikuUser>
ok I'm back
HaikuUser is now known as blehmeh98
<blehmeh98>
I ran it in the terminal, didn't get anything useful in the terminal output
<blehmeh98>
instead, I hit the dialog option to save a report to a file
<augiedoggie>
yeah, i just installed it, there's something wrong
<augiedoggie>
you can open a new issue for it at haikuports
<blehmeh98>
Ok, I will
<blehmeh98>
speaking of, I was trying to create an account at the Haiku Depot, but I can't from within Web Positive because I can't pass the robot test
<blehmeh98>
It tells me to answer a question found in an image, but the image doesn't even show up, so I have no idea what it's talking about
<augiedoggie>
:/
<augiedoggie>
you could try one of the other browsers, otter, falkon, dooble
<augiedoggie>
hm, milkytracker still runs on 32 bit R1/beta3
<blehmeh98>
ahh, I'm using the 64-bit version of Haiku
<blehmeh98>
I hope that's not an issue for more Haiku software
<augiedoggie>
yeah, that's my usual Haiku
<augiedoggie>
you're on a nightly build?
<blehmeh98>
on the other hand, perhaps I don't need 8 GB of RAM to use Haiku
<blehmeh98>
no, I'm on R1/Beta3, the about menu says so
<augiedoggie>
hm, interesting

<augiedoggie>
usually it's the other way around, 64 bit has better app/port support
<blehmeh98>
gotcha
<Begasus>
waddlesplash, do you want me to revoke the tk_x recipe from the PR? If so I can do it now, heading down here in a bit
<waddlesplash>
yes
<Begasus>
ok
<Begasus>
Done, I also checked the build on 64bit, all builds were fine
<waddlesplash>
well, right now git-gui works fine for me on 64bit at least
<waddlesplash>
so, if it doesn't with the new version, then maybe something broke and we shuldn't push it yet
<Begasus>
hence the wip label on it
fridericus has joined #haiku
<Begasus>
tk is still the same version (so not much changed there), tcl has had a version bump
<Begasus>
I'll try to check tomorrow with the current version on 64bit and gitk (at least it was broken on 32bit)
<Begasus>
PS, on 32bit I updated git to the latest version, on 64bit I used the current one

What is the cheapest usb wifi that works with haiku? The one I just bought does not work with haiku
<waddlesplash>
8812AU or 8821AU maybe?
<augiedoggie>
my ancient RTL8188CUS works, but it maxes out at 300mbps
<augiedoggie>
you can probably find those for free :P
<blehmeh98>
I believe Haiku borrows the Free BSD drivers, so stuff that works OK with FreeBSD should work OK with Haiku
<blehmeh98>
don't quote me on that though
<waddlesplash>
yes, that is correct
<waddlesplash>
mostly

RTL8188CUS how do I find one for free?
<augiedoggie>
they are $2 on ebay, if you know someone that has one they will probably give it to you for free because it is so slow
<jason123santa>
My internet is not even 300mbps
<jason123santa>
the cheap rtl8188 lots on ebay are not even supported
<jason123santa>
At least the one I got
<augiedoggie>
actually, mine is 150 mbps, and i doubt it could actually achieve that speed
<jason123santa>
I don't want to get another rtl8188 that is not supported

if I wanted to debug the keyboard/trackpad/touchpoint in my x260 stopping working on the latest haiku hrev, how would I go about doing that?
<zdykstra>
it works on boot, works for X number of minutes and then they all just stop functioning
<waddlesplash>
that's weird, because I don't think there's any relevant changes recently here
jryans has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash>
older versions work?
<waddlesplash>
well, you start by checking syslog for errors
<zdykstra>
A february hrev exhibited the same behavior. I haven't gone further back in time.
<waddlesplash>
ah. then yes it might be some actual change
<waddlesplash>
finding what the change is will make fixing it much easier
<zdykstra>
I'll hit up syslog to see if I can find anything - and if a USB keyboard continues to work.
<zdykstra>
50% of the time I boot, the trackpad works but the Lenovo touchpoint doesn't work. So something is wonky.
<waddlesplash>
possibly PS/2 related, assuming they're connected via ps2
<zdykstra>
I'm not ruling out a hardware issue either, this laptop is funky in Linux
<zdykstra>
I think they're all connected via PS/2, yup
<zdykstra>
I booted it because of the exciting brightness control feature for Skylake GPUs :)
<jason123santa>
I have a desktop and the mouse and keyboard that works with PS/2 on haiku

It has come to my attention that VSync is enabled and forced on for every 3D program. Does anyone know how to turn it off?

sharper in the movement if it make sense
<rennj>
what about the mouse curser

vs beos version anyway
<rennj>
5.0.3 vs all!
<AlienSoldier>
What i would like is VSync in Mediaplayer
<rennj>
what about vlc on haiku? no feature buttons/dials to tweak?
<rennj>
vlc,mplayer,mpv..ffmpeg ftw!
<rennj>
Fmpeg is the leading multimedia framework, able to decode, encode, transcode, mux, demux, stream, filter and play pretty much anything that humans and machines have created.
<rennj>
haha
<rennj>
nice about:
<x512[m]>
Proper VSync will need redesign of GPU driver architecture.

x512: Is there a way to take the /boot/system/develop folder icon and use on a different folder that you know of? copyattr does not work for me.
<x512[m]>
It should be possible to set icon manually. Icon files is
<x512[m]>
Icon files are located in data/artwork/icons.
<mbrumbelow[m]>
Right. I will try that out thanks!
<x512[m]>
Icon-O-Matic have an option of exporting icon as attribute.
<x512[m]>
develop directory icon is handled by special Tracker logic, not attribute.
<mbrumbelow[m]>
Ahhhh
<rennj>
opentrackers! Icon-O-Matic i want to say i used back in the day

i seem to be having memory-related issues with the jvm while working on my bazel port
<selfish>
after running for a while, things start failing with out of memory errors; the desktop applet shows java using about 500mb of ram (which it should be) and plenty of free memory, but the kdl avail command tells me the opposite. killing the java process seems to free up over 4gb as reported by avail. aspace also shows some big (one ~2gb, another ~1gb, probably more) 'mmap area's on the jvm address space
<selfish>
i'm admitedly mostly confused here, but i imagine those areas are what's using up all the physical memory and causing my ooms?
