Aloha.
<OscarL>
Seems like Calendar doesn't builds anymore with gcc2 :-/
<OscarL>
I've updated its recipe to its latest git-rev, as that solves the "mising symbols" issue. Works fine on 64 bits. Tried testing on 32... no-go.
<OscarL>
I guess we should move to to x86 (secondaryArch), unless there's another fix for the "::stoi undeclared" and "::to_string undeclared" errors (<string> is already #included)
<augiedoggie>
i haven't used the calendar app but if it has (or will have) replicants then it needs to be gcc2 compatible
<botifico>
[haikuports/haikuports] jmairboeck 7332f78 - lilypond: also update TEST_REQUIRES (#7377)
<OscarL>
augiedoggie: I saw you fixed the build of FilWip on Haikuports. Thanks for that! Question... wouldn't it be desirable to upstream the patch to HaikuArchives?
<augiedoggie>
sure, but i lack the motivation
<OscarL>
augiedoggie: that's totally OK. Just wondering (to see if there was a reason not to).

<noobiest>
So I tried running Haiku(x86_64 build, nightly-anyboot disk image) on Hyper-V, but it got me a black screen. I am probably missing something, but I don't really know Hyper V
<noobiest>
Earlier I tried with QEMU, but Intel XHAM says I don't have EPT support
<noobiest>
Even tho systeminfo.exe says I have firmware virtualization enabled, and it's literally 10th gen i7
<noobiest>
how it will not have EPT Support is beyond me, so either there's some Windows quirk or Intel's XHAM is messing up.
<noobiest>
I also tried VirtualBox but even using Hyper-V acceleration I get miserable response times from Haiku
rennj has joined #haiku
<OscarL>
noobiest: I have no issues running Haiku on VBox (on Win10)... I just use the default para-virtualization interface.
<OscarL>
Works pretty darn well even on my old Athlon II X2 and Phenom II X4.
<noobiest>
Interesting..
<noobiest>
That's completely opposite to what I experienced
<OscarL>
I've enabled "nested pagination" (or something like that... sorry.. my VBox is in Spanish)
<noobiest>
Ah, yeah that's EPT
<OscarL>
Enabled PEA/NX, and VT-x/AMD-v
<noobiest>
I think I did, but I will give it a try later and tell about it tomorrow
<OscarL>
I've heard people complaining that their Xeons weren't as good as my old CPUs running Haiku on VBox :-(
DKnoto has joined #haiku
<noobiest>
Is it important to have Windows Virtual Machine Platform disabled too, to have EPT support?
<OscarL>
noobiest: not idea, but FWIW... I don'e even have any Hyper-V stuff installed on my LTSC.
<OscarL>
*don't (sorry for the typos and broken "English")
<netpositive>

noobiest: for the record... when using VBox, I also install the VMWare addons in Haiku (pkgman install vmware_addons), and set VBox to use VMSVGA as graphic adapter (with 32 MB of VRAM). That should help a bit regaring graphincs.
<OscarL>
Regarding performance changes with that, YMMV, but it's worth a try. (I use it mostly to have more options regarding resolutions)
<botifico>
[haikuports/haikuports] threedeyes 280fbbb - BePDF: bump for rebuild
<OscarL>
I even use VESA BIOS patching with that VMWare... as it allows me to use 1360x768 (not from the Screen preflet, thou).
<OscarL>
I use the same Haiku installs on bare-metal and on VBox. and that 1360x768 is the best compromise resolution when switching in a hurry :-)
<OscarL>
(as works well on both cases, I mean)
<OscarL>
Mmm, disregard the VESA bios patching comment. It seems that I got rid of that after installing the vmware addons.
<OscarL>
I wonder if the vmware_addons should be split, or at least create a new one only for the vmware graphics driver/accelerant (as the rest are of no much use under VBox, for example).

Is the vmware graphics driver useful in virtualbox? I didn't think these would be compatible. And we have virtualbox guest additions ported as well so why not just use that?
<OscarL>
the VBox additions do not work with newer versions of VBox.
<OscarL>
and VBox lets you choose, and sometimes even suggests, using VMSVGA.
<rennj>
perhaps start using the superior product vmware
<rennj>
oracle audit you either way
<rennj>
you used the guest addons..pay us
<OscarL>
PulkoMandy: From my current Screen preflet: "VMWare (SVGA) (VM)"
<OscarL>
*no parenthesis around SVGA
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<rennj>
mouse leaves window, leaves guest os..another part of that vmware
<rennj>
and the vm disk shrinking
<rennj>
oh and time sync guest vm and host os..i think
<rennj>
so lets split the vmware guest addons pkg just so the vbox users can emulate the vmware svga driver?
<rennj>
haha
<OscarL>
practicallity beats purity, at least for me.
<rennj>
deal with your product choice
<OscarL>
that's what I'm doing.
<OscarL>
Isn't it a bit weird that FilWip needs to link to libshared on 64 bits builds, but builds OK without it on 32 bits gcc2?
<OscarL>
On 64 bits it misses some BToolBar related symbols (when not linking against libshared, of course), that are provided by libtracker.so on 32 bits.
<OscarL>
using hrev56582 on both 32 and 64.

<slubman>
Should I report these issues from a fresh Haiku R1beta3 install as bugs on haikuports : https://imgur.com/a/Owz5tAY ?
<waddlesplash>
no
<waddlesplash>
because beta3 repos are now deprecated
<waddlesplash>
if you run that again you should probably get a 404 error instead of those errors
<nephele>
isn't there a beta3 version for haikuports?
<nephele>
that is, a last version of packages one can download?
<waddlesplash>
no, we don't keep around the old haikuports repos unfortunately, takes up too much space
<waddlesplash>
in the future if we were made of money or have a proper mirror setup then probably we could
<nephele>
would it work with space constraints to atleast keep it around untill the next beta is available? with how it is currently the beta version just breaks for a month untill the next one is released
<slubman>
so I should already change the Haiku repository to R1beta4 ?
<nephele>
if you want to participate in the beta4 release cycle with bug testing :)
<waddlesplash>
slubman: depends, we're currently in the process of reorganizing infra for the beta4 release
<waddlesplash>
I wouldn't expect any major changes between now and the release, probably it's safe to upgrade
<slubman>
I have such an install, but in the meantime a brand new beta3 install cannot install these packages
<waddlesplash>
beta3 was released a year and a half ago, it's not really "brand new" anymore :)
<waddlesplash>
because we're such a small group, there's usually some friction like this in the few weeks between the old release being "deprecated" and the new one set up
<nephele>
yeah... deprecating the last release before the new one is released is kinda ugh
<slubman>
understandable these frictions, I'm new, and just trying to understand how this transition is supposed to take place
<waddlesplash>
just upgrade to the beta candidates, really
HaikuUser has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash>
no major changes are exepcted to be made at this point
<waddlesplash>
and once the current rebuild cycle completes all the temporary breakage should go away
<waddlesplash>
just remove and re-add your package repos, changing "master" to "r1beta4"
<waddlesplash>
in the URLs
<waddlesplash>
then run "pkgman full-sync", reboot; you may have to manually "pkgman install haiku_datatranslators" to get back image formats and other such things
<PulkoMandy>
That doesn't really make sense, we should keep beta3 fully working (with no updates to its repos) until beta4 is released :/
<waddlesplash>
PulkoMandy: we don't have the capacity to do so at haikuports
<waddlesplash>
we did the exact same thing for all previous releases
<waddlesplash>
I agree it's not ideal. but that's what we've done in the absence of a proper mirror setup
<waddlesplash>
and, we don't have a proper mirror setup because we still don't verify package signatures
<PulkoMandy>
We should grow it in some way. The point of betas is testing the release process, identifyin, these problems, and fixing them
<PulkoMandy>
I don't understand how mirrors help? You still need a place to store stuff so mirrors can copy from there?
<rennj>
put on the users! torrents
<rennj>
offload some of the costs
<rennj>
archive.org needs a copy also
<rennj>
datahoarders
<rennj>
github,gitlab hehe
<nephele>
how much space does the haikuports repo take circa?
<rennj>
sourceforge dont froget them
<waddlesplash>
nephele: the problem for mirrors isn't space, they'd take what we have
<waddlesplash>
the problem is we still don't verify the signatures of the repo files
<nephele>
my question wasn't targeted at mirroring
<nephele>
more to understand the scope
<rennj>
supply chain attack in pypi w4sp java log4j..
<slubman>
<waddlesplash> "then run "pkgman full-sync..." <- The update did went well, and indeed I was able to install the packages
<waddlesplash>
:)
<rennj>
part of reproducible builds
matt3 has left #haiku [#haiku]
<waddlesplash>
upgrading between releases is indeed generally painless
<nephele>
(unless you upgrade from a previous-previous release :D)
<waddlesplash>
even then it's possible, you just have to do some steps manually
<waddlesplash>
I upgraded an install from a pre-beta2 release to the latest nightly a few months ago
<nephele>
yes, it's possible. i did do it. but it's not painless :P
<waddlesplash>
its way easier than doing such an upgrade on debian or something
<nephele>
... can't argue with that
