<andreasdr[m]> Hi da_snowbird
<extrowerk> tried to compile Ardour on Haiku, but it depends on GTK2 instead of GTK3 :(
<da_snowbird> ^^ same with hexchat :/
<extrowerk> why would anybody use hexchat on Haiku if there is Vision?
<AlienSoldier> because sometime app get regression (it is one thing i learned using haiku)
x10z has joined #haiku
<da_snowbird> mostly out of familiarity and nostalgia, same reason I skin audacious as winamp lol
<AlienSoldier> nostalgia really kick the lama ass
<da_snowbird> also it's insane how much progress haiku seems to have made in the past beta cycle
<AlienSoldier> i still wait to try webkit 1.9 in 32bit to see if it improve the web experience a bit.
<AlienSoldier> i don't know why the build was not simultaneous with the 64bit one
<da_snowbird> more ram requirement perhaps? if not xcompiling
<AlienSoldier> is 1.9 supposed to be part of beta4? i guess not

<PulkoMandy> AlienSoldier, the build for 32bit failed
<PulkoMandy> madmax made a pull request to fix the problem. I just don't have a lot of time to merge it and no other haiku dev seem to check pull request on webkit or they all expect me to do all the work, so it's a bit slow
<PulkoMandy> I will probably do a 1.9.1 since there are various small fixes already
<PulkoMandy> I don't know if waddlesplash will include it in the final beta image or if it's already too late for that, in the latter case it will be available as an update
<waddlesplash> i would like to include it in final beta yes
<waddlesplash> however that download problem is a blocker
<PulkoMandy> yes, but we can switch back to netservices instead of curl (I fixed the crash on exit with netservices yesterday)

<botifico> [haikuports/haikuports] extrowerk cbf3949 - LV2 : bump (#7495)
<waddlesplash> PulkoMandy: yes, possibly, I saw the libwebp change
<waddlesplash> however I don't think system malloc is expected to align to 16 bytes by default on 32-bit
<waddlesplash> ... perhaps it's another stack alignment thing?
<PulkoMandy> the object is allocated with new, so the stack isn't involved
<PulkoMandy> webkit just expects malloc to align things on 16 bytes and we don't except on x86_64
<waddlesplash> that doesn't make much sense
<PulkoMandy> I don't know if their expectation is correct, but it seems easier to align malloc on 16 bytes than to fix all webkit code (where there isn't much to do, the assumption is probably somewhere deep in gcc)
<waddlesplash> who generated an "A" instruction here?
<waddlesplash> is it inline assembly or just GCC?
<PulkoMandy> it's gcc
<waddlesplash> "Regular malloc aligns memory suitable for any object type (which, in practice, means that it is aligned to alignof(max_align_t)). aligned_alloc is useful for over-aligned allocations, such as to SSE, cache line, or VM page boundary. "
<waddlesplash> so, what
<waddlesplash> 's max_align_t on 32-bit? did we do something incorrect here?
<waddlesplash> appears we do the right thing in the bootloader heaps
<waddlesplash> err, I mean the debug heaps
<PulkoMandy> ALIGNMENT is set to 16 in hoard2 for x86_64 and to sizeof(double) in all other cases
<waddlesplash> so, we should change this to use max_align_t, then
<waddlesplash> that should fix the problem
<PulkoMandy> yes
<waddlesplash> easy enough
<waddlesplash> will do shortly
<PulkoMandy> gcc2 doesn't define max_align_t as far as I can see?
<PulkoMandy> (just did a grep in buildtools sources so I may have just missed it)

<waddlesplash> jmairboeck: ouch. that's a bug, then
<waddlesplash> probably tk_devel should be CONFLICTS
<waddlesplash> ideally tk would use Xlibe itself instead of SDL but there's still some critical issues
<jmairboeck> I just reported it in haikuports
gouchi has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<jmairboeck> I just saw that our Tk is not the "real" one but based on SDL
<waddlesplash> yes
<waddlesplash> the problem appears to be that BackgroundElements in TK get placed on top of everything else. I can't manage to figure out why this is
<jmairboeck> I guess that means I have to disable X11 support in my new OpenCascade port. I hope the new official version contains a bit more without X11 support than the OCE version we have right now.
<jmairboeck> that one is missing half of the libraries it seems
<jmairboeck> Up to now, I have only built and used OpenCascade on Windows, which doesn't use X11 at all of course
<waddlesplash> PulkoMandy: seems alignof max_align_t == 8 on 32-bit

<nekobot> [haiku/haiku] 5f40b96c3509 - libroot: Adjust malloc_hoard2 to use max_align_t when available.
<waddlesplash> PulkoMandy: I also don't think we should necessarily revert to the curl backend. it seems a bunch of issues got fixed with the curl backend according to Vidrep

<PulkoMandy> yes, but is anyone looking into the bug with downloads?
<waddlesplash> well, I'm looking at the source code now
<waddlesplash> but this isn't a part of the code I know much about

<waddlesplash> appears the Curl network backend has a separate download handler class
<waddlesplash> the Windows WebKitLegacy has separate files for WebDownload for each backend

<PulkoMandy> did you check alignof(max_align_t) to be 8? I see in gcc stddef.h it is defined as a struct, and for i386 there is a special case so the struct includes a float128, which should be 16 byte aligned
<PulkoMandy> it has a #ifdef __i386__, do we define that?
<PulkoMandy> (gcc/gcc/ginclude/stddef.h line 424)
<PulkoMandy> and glibc had similar issues to what we have: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=21120
<waddlesplash> oh, my, you're right
<waddlesplash> and even worse this is a gcc/clang difference
da_snowbird has quit [Quit: Vision[]: i've been blurred!]
<waddlesplash> latest clang has alignof maxalign -> 8, latest gcc -> 16
<waddlesplash> that's nasty!
<x512[m]> Time to switch to Clang :)
<PulkoMandy> clang seems to be the one who's wrong in this case?
<x512[m]> Why have default 16 byte malloc alignment? If some program need aligned alloc, it should set desired alignment explicitly.
<waddlesplash> SSE2 really needs 16-byte alignment
<waddlesplash> and using SSE instructions everywhere is a nontrivial performance improvement

* phschafft feels like he did the right thing when he made all his code not depend on the alignment too much.
rennj has joined #haiku
<waddlesplash> phschafft: the compiler can make it depend on alignment for you
<waddlesplash> that's the thing
<phschafft> within some limits.
<waddlesplash> you would be surprised how far those limits go
<phschafft> which is why the code is based on the specs from POSIX (which are the most relevant ones for our projecs).
<waddlesplash> it can assume anything coming out of malloc is aligned on whatever alignof(max_align_t)
<waddlesplash> and that assumption goes VERY far
<waddlesplash> it can also assume the stack is aligned to at least 16, usually, maybe more depending on arches
<phschafft> yes. but bigger alignments aren't a problem for me. smaller ones could be.
<phschafft> but my code is at least 4 byte safe.
<waddlesplash> you think it is, but is it really?
<waddlesplash> pretty much impossible to write 4-byte-safe code these days
<waddlesplash> it only works because x86 mostly does not care
<waddlesplash> ARM actually does care
<waddlesplash> and SPARC of course cares even more than ARM
<phschafft> it is when you are a) used to those kind of things, b) have the tools as a) makes them have them.
<phschafft> *makes you
