<akaWolf0> with Mesa 23.1.0 is there no need to use custom build on Arch?
<akaWolf0> clover[m]: you should know =)
<akaWolf0> steev: are there some important patches which are in your branch on top of jhovold's?
<akaWolf0> I've just finished reading channel logs for a few weeks, it's nice to see there is support for video decoder venus.
svarbanov has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
<akaWolf0> how did you check it for work?
<HdkR> akaWolf0: Everything for a690 is in 23.1.0
<quinine> <akaWolf0> "I've just finished reading..." <- you can call it via v4l2. I simply checked and it works.
<HdkR> I'm still greedy and want vaapi support :)

<quinine> <HdkR> "I'm still greedy and want..." <- I've started, but I played TOTK 30h this weekend.
<HdkR> quinine: oooo
<HdkR> That'll help these closed source applications that only use vaapi once available
<quinine> and open source applications using only vaapi :)
<HdkR> I know an argument for those is that since it is open source, just implement v4l2 support. Which hurts
<HdkR> Closed-source games don't have that luxury
<quinine> few applications use v4l2 directly, implementing it is a pain.
<HdkR> Of course, non-ARM world doesn't give a flip about v4l2
<quinine> Especially most desktop applications will not use v4l2, because basically only arm devices will support v4l2.
svarbanov has joined #aarch64-laptops
<quinine> HdkR: Yes
<HdkR> Which is why these emulated games also don't give a flip about v4l2 :P

<clover[m]> So quininer, for example chromium and Firefox can't make use of venus video acceleration until libva-v4l2-driver is ready?
<quinine> clover[m]: If chromium has v4l2 build flags enabled, I think it will work, but firefox only supports vaapi.

<agl7> steev: I see you put a new version of lenove-x13s-6.3.y on guthub bevor 11 hours. Please, can you say to me what's new?
<steev> stuff and things
<steev> no, uhh, let me look
<HdkR> My favourite
<steev> because i've slept since i pushed
<agl7> ok it was 1:00 AM in the morning at you timezone, or?
<steev> i dropped my make it hotter patch, people were complaining about the heat; v3 of bamse's orientation switching patch set, it's based on 6.3.2
<steev> i don't remember what time it was when i pushed, maybe?
<agl7> steev: Ok I have get it and I will produce a binary of the kernel for the Lenove-x13s and test it. I give you a feedback!
<agl7> steev: I also have a Galaxy Book S with the SoC '8cx Gen1'. Is your kernel also for this SoC? If so, what do I need to select for the Galaxy Book S?
<steev> no
<agl7> steev: Have you heard anywhere if there is an install ISO for the Galaxy Book S with the SC180X SoC?
<steev> i have not
<agl7> steev: OK, then I will ask Google. I think I will find something.
<steev> i don't have all the answers, i only know the devices i have, which ain't much
<agl7> No problem
<agl7> :-)
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> steev: What to choose: laptop_defconfig or johan_defconfig or defconfig for kernel compilation first?
<steev> what do you mean first?
<steev> defconfig is the kernel defconfig, johan is jhovold's defconfig that is pretty much just x13s support, and laptop is closest to a distro defconfig
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> translator, please excuse me. Before compiling which file of 3 should be used.
<steev> whichever you prefer to use
hightower3 has joined #aarch64-laptops
<steev> i personally use the laptop one
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> laptop_defconfig?
<steev> yes
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]> thx

<gwolf> steev: FWIW I haven't migrated to 6.3 yet (am still using my patched 5.19) because I have been busy to tinker with it... I tried distro_defconfig, but the resulting kernel is... not quite optimal
<gwolf> I get several video quirks (that is, much slower video, screen sometimes not coming up, etc), and... well, haven't had time to play further...
<steev> gwolf: hm
<steev> i haven't saved the distro_defconfig there in a while
<steev> http://sprunge.us/oOCm8v is the one i'm using on mine, at the moment
<steev> just in case i haven't pushed, i'm pushing c630-v6.3 out now, this is what i'm using
<gwolf> OK, thans!
<gwolf> than*k*s
<gwolf> I'm not on my laptop right now
<gwolf> but am taking note
<gwolf> and will try it... hopefully later today?
<steev> that's not to say it's perfect
<steev> just that i'm using it :D
<steev> the audio is still poppy as hell
<gwolf> (doing a PhD sucks.... all you your free hacking time ๐Ÿ˜‰)
<gwolf> But there _is_ audio, right?
<gwolf> FWIW I only have the pops, without any working audio

<clover[m]> added Linux ARM version of dbeaver to AUR: https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/dbeaver-arm
<steev> wow, look at you copying kali
<steev> i actually hate that they call it arm, because it's arm64 only
<clover[m]> yeah that irked me too
<HdkR> aarch64 :P
<clover[m]> ARMv8
<clover[m]> I kind of want a Project Volterra to use as a home server

<clover[m]> is anyone working on that kernel?

<steev> i know shawn has one, i think there was someone else in here who does... iirc shawn uses his with acpi boot
<Leandro[m]> ACPI ON ARM LINUX????????
<Leandro[m]> ๐Ÿคจ
<bluerise> I have one with OpenBSD on it, also ACPI
<bluerise> its ACPI tables are worthless
<bluerise> but good enough for some basic stuff
<clover[m]> cool
<Leandro[m]> aight so linux/*BSD works with acpi on viktor?
<Leandro[m]> *volterra
<Leandro[m]> why tf did i say viktor
<HdkR> Depends on what you mean by "works"
<Leandro[m]> works with aka uses it
<HdkR> If you use a GPU then it definitely doesn't work
<clover[m]> i supposed if i want an aarch64 linux server i could use a used M1 Mac Mini with asahi
<clover[m]> volterra is cooler looking though
<HdkR> M2 Mac Mini will probably be the better choice sooner rather than later. Same price but more powerful
<Leandro[m]> clear case mod wen?
<clover[m]> steev: i am failing to build 6.3.y today
<clover[m]> make[1]: *** [scripts/Makefile.build:494: drivers] Error 2... (full message at <https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/v3/download/matrix.org/ILOxAafvBeEfzipHfDJhJqio>)
<clover[m]> not a helpful error message
<konradybcio> you need to scroll up higher
<clover[m]> ah, thanks. https://pastebin.com/r0wAP1z9
<steev> odd, i don't get that here, you may have an option enabled that the removal gets rid of
<steev> you can revert bamse's patches removing dp_hpd stuff
<steev> that's weird, i wonder why i don't run into it
<steev> yanked them out and pushed again

<Dylanger> Let's go team, I believe frame.work will eventually release an ARM Laptop/mainboard
<clover[m]> don't Windows and Qualcomm have an exclusive deal?
<clover[m]> framework might want to wait for the "M1 class" chips that qualcomm promises by end of 2023: https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2022/04/qualcomms-m1-class-laptop-chips-will-be-ready-for-pcs-in-late-2023/

<clover[m]> oh so should i drop that from my pkbuild?
<clover[m]> s/pkbuild/pkgbuild/
<steev> i'm surprised it didn't fail to build with that applied on top
<steev> but maybe yours touches a different file
exeat has joined #aarch64-laptops
<steev> speaking of mutter though, debian needs to kick their ass into gear and get 44.1 in already
<clover[m]> alarm is still on GNOME 43.5
<steev> 44.0 has an annoying bug with Xorg where.... idk what they are... don't get proper window decorations
<steev> actually it's not just with Xorg, it's with xorg and wayland, and it's fixed in 44.1
<steev> but you can only work around it with xorg since you can restart the shell
<steev> with wayland, you can't, so you're stuck without the proper decorations
<clover[m]> so the Ubuntu devs are also having issues booting linux on a usb: https://discourse.ubuntu.com/t/foundations-team-updates-thursday-16-february-2023/33954/7
<clover[m]> called it a "Linux 6.2 kernel issue"
<steev> could be, could not be
<clover[m]> it's been happening to me since 6.0-rc1
<akaWolf0> clover[m]: which kernel version do you use?
<akaWolf0> steev: should I use your or johan's kernel branch?
<steev> whichever you prefer
<akaWolf0> steev: what's the difference? do you have something on top of johan's?
<steev> yes there are things on top of johan's stuff, i also tend to (but not always) keep following a kernel til it's not supported anymore
<steev> i really need to re-set-up my hugo stuff so i can blog again
<akaWolf0> looks like I have to check git log :)
