<xyaon> "oh, is the 5g ufs?" <- Do you need anything from a working w11 installation? I guess the previous owner of mine just executed reset windows and did not used the recovery media when packing it up for me.

Anyone get any games working on the x13s? I'm going to see if we can get doom or minecraft working. Getting the Minecraft installer for ARM is quite annoying.
<HdkR>
We just need to kindly ask robclark to make all the games vroom for us
<pz[m]>
That is brilliant, steev with the prismlauncher don't you need Minecraft installed already or you can do the whole rodeo from it?
<pz[m]>
HdkR That's so cool. Steam w/ Proton?
<HdkR>
pz[m]: Indeed
<pz[m]>
Nice, I will need to give that a shot 😁
<steev>
pz[m]: i think it asked me to login with my mojango account or microsoft account or whatever? but that was all i did
<pz[m]>
steev: nice, I have an old Java version I bought I think on my MS account.
<pz[m]>
While just synthetic benchmarks I ran geekbench 5 & 6 against both my AMD desktop and my x13s and I have to say the numbers were much closer than I expected.
<pz[m]>
gb5 had the multicore score only 1,000 apart. gb6 puts them a little further apart but considering the x13s is a laptop and has a super long battery. I'm impressed.
<pz[m]>
Can't wait for next gen 😄
<Jasper[m]>

<Jasper[m]>
> Can't wait for next gen 😄
<Jasper[m]>
I think power usage is much more interesting too
<Jasper[m]>
VoLTErra uses about 20W on full tilt (iirc)
<HdkR>
Per core?
<HdkR>
Full SoC?
<HdkR>
From the wall? :)
<HdkR>
AMD's desktop CPUs can manage to pull 20w from a single core alone. Shows how much power they are pumping through those things
<Jasper[m]>
HdkR: Yes
<pz[m]>
That is the awesome part of this too, running low power. AMD is not bad but no where near ARM.
<Jasper[m]>
volterra is microsoft's sc8280xp devkit btw
<HdkR>
Different set of priorities right, AMD can't swing quite as low on the power consumption but they can sure as heck quadruple anything ARM is putting out :P
<pz[m]>
yea different priorities is right. Can't wait for next gen of ARM chips. Hopefully we get close. :)
<HdkR>
Although something like Steamdeck shows that CPU cluster pulling something like 7w for a quad core is still pretty good
<HdkR>
Looking forward to X4/A720 :)
<Jasper[m]>
I'm mostly looking forward to Nuvia's offering under qualcomm hahaha
<HdkR>
Big aspirations on that one, very little data
<clover[m]>
same jasper, although i'm quite happy with x13s perf
<erebionCCCamp232142[m]>
Still have not found a seller for an X13s with 32 GB RAM within European customs union. Can only play with the one from work. :/
<erebionCCCamp232142[m]>
Such a shame RAM isn't replaceable, otherwise I'd just buy one with 32 GB and upgrade, but 16 GB is way too long for me... I need to run two Electron apps...
<steev>
maybe you could ask work to buy you one and pay them?
<erebionCCCamp232142[m]>
Apparently Lenovo does not currently sell 32 GB versions.
<konradybcio>
maybe they're out of 32 gig skus
<Jasper[m]>
<clover[m]> "same jasper, although i'm..." <- Yes, it's better than my old laptop
<Jasper[m]>
And apart from distro support and the crashing issue I have I'm content with how Linux runs
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
erebionCCCamp232142[m]: maybe just buy a 16gb and have a master replace the bga chip?=)
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
clover: can you please tell me when you will release 6.5 kernel?
<HdkR>
Luckily in the US I can still buy 32GB variants
<clover[m]>
i usually wait for steev to add his patchset, but he has not been feeling well so might be a week or so?
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
* 6.5 kernel? in repo
<agl7>
clover[m]: Oh
erebionCCCamp232142[m] is now known as erebion[m]
<clover[m]>
erebion: remember swap is a think. so maybe 16GB RAM + 4 GB swapfile is enough to run your two electrons ;)
<clover[m]>
s/think/thing
<steev>
oh, let me push that
<HdkR>
I'm surprised there are any native Arm64 Linux Electron apps that anyone would want to use.
<clover[m]>
VS Code for life
<HdkR>
Oh wow, good on Microsoft for providing that
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
are you using this laptop as your only pc?
<clover[m]>
i have so many computers... M1 Pro, Some old acer laptop with an i3, two X13s, pinebook pro, rpi 4, rockpro64, a ryzen 6800x rig
erebion[m] has left #aarch64-laptops [#aarch64-laptops]
<clover[m]>
oh and 2 pinephones :)
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
clover[m]: Are they viable as an everyday phone?
<clover[m]>
some people use them. part of my job is to be on-call though and i can't risk a dropped call or the terrible app compatibility of not having slack / pagerduty immediately available (can workaround this to some extent with waydroid)
<clover[m]>
i tried for a while but i missed too many calls to be comfortable with it, though things might be better these days
<Bioxvirizm-x13s[m]>
So no)))))
<clover[m]>
yeah no

<erebion>
<clover[m]> "if only everyone just used..." <- We'll be getting there.

I've already got 3k people to Matrix.
<steev>
clover[m]: linux-6.5.y
<steev>
wel, the rest too, but you should see which one i mean
<HdkR>
Oh right, I should update
<steev>
lenovo-x13s-linux-6.5.y - on top of johan's stuff, the laptop config (which may be missing things, sorry, i didn't go over johan's config file changes yet), konrad's missing cpu idle states, konrad's bcm voting, mani's aspm patches, konrad's patches for pdc (i think a couple were dropped from that patchset are unrelated to thinkpad support), and some acv/pdc stuff that i don't fully understand yet, but figured why not
<Jasper[m]>
steev: sounds lovely
<clover[m]>
thanks steev. major GNOME outage happening right now is blocking my build from running https://status.gnome.org/
<HdkR>
Is the pauth stuff fixed in 6.5 now? I still have the kernel flag set to disable it
