<\[m]> nice, smooth update to fedora40 on th macbook air m1 - plasma 6 stable for now seems
<\[m]> and ofc newer packages all around, e.g. foliate just works
<\[m]> no working element client seems on fedora? I installed nheko - good enough though lol, seems the kde guys like matrix, they made their own client (as they like to do)
<\[m]> neochat lol
<\[m]> * on fedora arm64? I

<albsen[m]> how do I check why the screen I'm trying to connect isn't running at full 2.5k resolution? it works on all my other linux boxes. I've heard that up to 4k is working for some people so maybe I'm missing something. I'm on debian.
<albsen[m]> on my x13s ...
<travmurav[m]> iirc hw only uses two lanes even on x13s still due to some software limitation, which would be 2k limit I think
<travmurav[m]> perhaps I misremember and that was fixed at some point though
<HdkR> I don't think that limitation has changed
<bamse> travmurav[m]: no, you're right...
<albsen[m]> oh, I see, i thought someone was running 4k.
<bamse> there's a set of patches on the list which implements the lane muxing...but usb dies pretty reliably when we switch to 4-lane DP
<bamse> albsen[m]: i am, 4k@30hz...or 4k@60 without working usb...depending on which tree i'm running
<travmurav[m]> huh so like it kills the usb 2.0 lines too?
<bamse> i've not investigated it further, but seems like the usb controller gives up
<albsen[m]> bamse: does that also include the keyboard and touchpad?
<albsen[m]> or would those still work
<bamse> albsen[m]: it would be for that given usb port/controller
<bamse> albsen[m]: in particular on x13s those input devices sits on i2c busses, so that would not be a problem
<albsen[m]> bamse: thx, will check

<clover[m]> Meh. I will probably wait for the generic arm64 uefi iso for Pop!_OS 24.04 that is coming out soon and distro hop.
<jglathe_x13s> :) @clover[m] interesting. Is it possible to get a preview? I'm just up on Pop!_OS 22.04 on Volterra, trying to beat it into shape

<clover[m]> Maybe
<clover[m]> Have you seen this? https://github.com/pop-os/pop-arm64
<clover[m]> Doesn't seem very updated but maybe it works
<jglathe_x13s> yes, I have it starred. No movement since a long time
<jglathe_x13s> last week or so they added arm64 as build target on the popos kernel
<jglathe_x13s> I got pop 22.04 booted via the already installed grub from Ubuntu (24.04). systemd-boot didn't want to, yet, not recognizing the boot entry
<steev> oh no :( the poor arch peeps
<jglathe_x13s> Pop!OS is fun
<jglathe_x13s> and pretty fast
<steev> fun?
<steev> i do like that they have that tiling thing on gnome, i tried it out but they kill a bunch of default keybinds to do it
<jglathe_x13s> ok for a non-unix guy like /me probably. I liked that it was fast on pretty old hw, and a nice feel
<jglathe_x13s> don't use the tiling
<steev> yeah, i'm definitely not considered a non-unix guy :(
<steev> they write a lot of stuff in rust as well, which i found interesting, though i don't keep up (a lot abandoned as well, which i also like, means they weren't going to commit to something that wasn't gonna work long run)
<steev> for a long time, i maintained a fork of the pre-cursor to https://github.com/pop-os/system76-scheduler because it worked really well on arm devices
<steev> the problem i have in kali is, we often have things shoved into the background, but don't want to slaughter its performance (scans and such)
<agl> Gives there a working Ubuntu version for the x13s?
f_ has joined #aarch64-laptops
<jglathe_x13s> @agl yes but only the 23.10 with the installer. I have made a preinstalled desktop one, good if you can burn it to an external ssd to boot from https://github.com/jglathe/linux_ms_dev_kit/discussions/15#discussioncomment-9333712 The Mantic installer ISO will take a while as it seems, did some tinkering with it, got too frustrated ;)
<jglathe_x13s> the preinstalled desktop is 24.04
<agl> Thank you jglathe_x13s
<bamse> agl, clover[m]: just use 6.9 straight from torvalds! you might want to add some config options, but that's it
hightower4 has quit [Ping timeout: 480 seconds]
aradhya7 has joined #aarch64-laptops
<agl> bamse: Is there no patches necessary?
<bamse> agl: no
<bamse> agl: but with upstream defconfig you will likely miss some (non-hw-specific) features...so i add a few extra config options
<bamse> agl: but i've been running clean upstream since 6.7 (iirc) on my x13s...
<bamse> agl: that said, johan do carry features and fixes in flight in his branch...so there might be some things you're missing...but strickly speaking you don't need it (and during -rc1/-rc2 johan's branch might contain bug fixes to regressions upstream that you want)
<steev> that's silly. we are what we call "early adopters" and "we like to cut ourselves on the bleeding edge"
<steev> but yeah, 6.9 is good enough
<steev> bamse: you should try out v8 of dmitry's pd mapper patches though
<bamse> steev: all the sharp edges are on linux-next, join me there! ;)
<steev> bamse: if i waited til linux-next you'd not get my t-b to get the patches in fast enough :P
<steev> but yeah, vanilla 6.7+ is fine
<bamse> right, for testing stuff we definitely want you picking up stuff
<steev> we just make clover[m] pick up the torch from me since he's moving to popos :P
<bamse> but it's good to test torvalds tree cleanly as well, in order to catch any regressions etc...
<bamse> and on the x13s that i depend on, torvalds tree should be the best possible kernel...
<steev> speaking of depending on.... who do i gotta bribe to get firmware that supports monitor mode?
<bamse> kalle valo is your guy for inquiries about wifi...

<agl> steev: USB-Thethering over my mobil Phone works also. Bluetooth Mouse works. USB-Access to my ACASIS-USB-C-Box works also, I can access the two SSD.
<steev> agl: the only things that shouldn't work are the things that johan and i patch in
<steev> anything that did work, but doesn't now, would be a regression that we wanna know about :)
<agl> steev: The things was I need (USB thethering and Network access over USB over my ACASIS-Box) have I configured with "make menuconfig". All was I need works with 6.9.0! Sound works also!
