<kaprests>
Hey! There is a while since the feature support page has been updated, is it up to date?
<chadmed>
it is yeah
<chadmed>
work has been mostly focused on getting stuff landed upstream and tracing the GPU
Glanzmann has joined #asahi
<kaprests>
I see, thanks for the reply! :))
<chadmed>
no problem :)
<Glanzmann>
mps: :-( about your mbp. Maybe consider buying a macbook air. I assume you can go with the smallest model. Also rember that most likely m2 macbook airs will be released in Nov 2022. Bad timing. :-(
<Glanzmann>
mps: HDMI will not work on linux for the time being but maybe under macos.
<mps>
Glanzmann: yes, I know, I thought to use hdmi to switch default boot from asahi to macos and then I could experiment with linux
<mps>
Glanzmann: and sure, next time I would choose air
<j`ey>
but hdmi over usb should be fine?
<mps>
j`ey: I'm waiting son to come here and check
<Glanzmann>
In Germany you can get the air very cheap. There is also an education discount if you have some grand children and your son being self employed, maybe he can get a tax discount.
<_jannau_>
depends on whether it's a displaylink type device or a dp -> hdmi converter using dp alt mode
<mps>
_jannau_: I have two usb-c hubs with hdmi, on one hdmi doesn't work with my 2 chromebooks
<mps>
and second one where hdmi works with cromebooks can't be plugged in mpb, maybe could if I use mallet
<mps>
Glanzmann: also here apple offer students and professor discount but I'm not sure how much. looks like it is around 100 euros
<Glanzmann>
Same as in Germany.

Linux won’t boot after turning it off and trying to turn it on again the next morning. Unfortunately I had an uptime of over eight hours yesterday so I am not exactly sure what could have caused it. I ran `pacman -Syu` so it could have given me the wrong kernel I suppose, but I thought that the added Asahi repositories would take care of that... (full message at
<Serentty[m]>
And then after that it just shows every service as FAILED. No extra information. Just that it failed to start.

cmalvi[m]: slack and discord are both electron, right?
<cmalvi[m]>
Yes but vscodium works
<j`ey>
oh you patched electron too
<cmalvi[m]>
No I’ve used a kernel with 4K pages
<j`ey>
unless they bundle electron, I dunno how that works
<j`ey>
oh right, sorry
<cmalvi[m]>
No problem :) it’s just a test with apps I use, maybe is useful for someone
<Serentty[m]>
I got EXT4FUSE set up so I can see the Linux installation. The kernel images still end in -asahi so I don’t think having the wrong kernel is the issue.
<j`ey>
yeah the fact youre booting and have nvme at all means you have the right kernel
<Serentty[m]>
Regardless of how to fix it, any idea what this error means in the first place? Is it failing to mount / on the NVMe drive? I have not found anyone else having this problem on Asahi so I have no idea where to start.
<Serentty[m]>
Most results for this error are patches and such.
<pimeys[m]>
does somebody have an example repo to compile your nixos flake and cache stuff to cachix for the whole system?
<j`ey>
Serentty[m]: trying to get into a root shell would be good, then you could manually try mount it
<Serentty[m]>
Hm... is it failing to mount though? The next message from asahi-root looks okay. But then every single service fails with no explanation after that.
<Serentty[m]>
I’ll try that though.
tensorcat[m] has joined #asahi
<j`ey>
it doesn't sound like it is failing to mount
<Serentty[m]>
Aha! It seems that it managed to write the to the journal.
<Serentty[m]>
I copied the file over to another machine to read it.
<Serentty[m]>
Another Linux machine I mean. I can access the file from MacOS, but I need journalctl to read it.
user982492 has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Serentty[m]>
Aha, I got it! The problem is a strange one.
<Serentty[m]>
I still have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it.
<Serentty[m]>
But it seems that the NVMe thing was a red herring. It probably gave me that before and I didn’t notice, because it goes on and mounts things anyway.
<Serentty[m]>
The actual problem is that it can’t run any executables. Every single service it tries to start gives “Exec format error”.
<j`ey>
alright run 'file <path>' on one of them
<Serentty[m]>
sshd: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, ARM aarch64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib/ld-linux-aarch64.so.1, BuildID[sha1]=a72cbf1c90de638cc25c35c8bad25a70c0fefae2, for GNU/Linux 3.7.0, stripped
<j`ey>
well that looks fine
<j`ey>
and /lib/ld-linux-aarch64.so.1 exists?
<Serentty[m]>
Yep.
<Serentty[m]>
ld-linux-aarch64.so.1: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, ARM aarch64, version 1 (SYSV), static-pie linked, BuildID[sha1]=56df7ffff6ba3e301a5e6a16d8b8162032f5f66f, not stripped
<Serentty[m]>
OH!
<Serentty[m]>
I remember something that I did yesterday, now.
<j`ey>
oh?
<Serentty[m]>
I installed qemu-user-static from the AUR.
<Serentty[m]>
It probably set some binfmt hooks.
<Serentty[m]>
I was going to try to run x86 software.
<Serentty[m]>
But I went to bed before I got around to it.

hmm not sure how easy that will be to undo
<Serentty[m]>
It seems /etc/binfmt.d is empty.
<j`ey>
/usr/lib/binfmt.d/ ?
<Serentty[m]>
Aha! It has a file.
<Serentty[m]>
qemu-static.conf
<Serentty[m]>
I will try moving that somewhere else.
<Serentty[m]>
Oh, but EXT4FUSE is read-only. :|
<Serentty[m]>
Time to install the Paragon free trial?
<j`ey>
Serentty[m]: can you upload that qemu-static.conf?
