<ktz_[m]> fyi people I meassured insanely absurd magnetic fields caused everytime you press on the mousepad.. just for context from pubmed: " The Earth’s magnetic field shows the intensity in the range of 30–70 µT, which is a natural stimulator of physiological processes in a living organism [8]"
<ktz_[m]> there's a special permission required to build houses in sweeden in areas where the magnetic fields exceed 0.4μΤ and I'm getting readings which average 30 whooping μΤ
<ktz_[m]> if you have any health conditions especially anything to do with the cardiovascular system you might need to pay twice the attention
<tpw_rules> did you miss a decimal point somewhere? how could you build any house legally in sweden?

<chadmed> ktz_[m]: sorry i cannot let this slide. the idea that 30uT will affect ANYTHING let alone cardiac pacemakers is utterly preposterous
<chadmed> "it has physiological effects" theyre basically immeasurable at this level. very very few people even feel the effects of an MRI machine's magnetic field, which is anywhere from 0.5T to 3T in routine procedures
<chadmed> i dont know where you heard that a touchpad's haptic feedback motor is enough of an impulse to kick off perceptible physiological effects "particularly in people with cardiovascular disorders" but i suggest you stop getting information from there
<nicolas17> damn "i dont know where you heard X but i suggest you stop getting information from there" is a phrase I need to copy
<opticron> you should literally say "X"

<marcan> a fridge magnet is 5mT, so >100 times stronger than that 30 µT, for the record.
<chadmed> yeah and i mean i can even link a study where a brain was subjected to an enormous 7T MRI field for over 24 hours continuously and no significant morphological changes were observed
<chadmed> the touchpad wreaking havoc on folks with pacemakers is just ludicrous
<chadmed> apple would simply never have been allowed to ship it if any deleterious physiological effects were observed as part of its use
<nicolas17> hm how much *would* affect pacemakers?
<chadmed> a good modern one? standing next to a really big electromagnet would probably screw with it a bit, or sticking rare earth magnets to your chest
<nicolas17> yeah, Apple gave a warning about carrying iPhones with magsafe in your shirt pocket if you have a pacemaker
<chadmed> yeah and even then im sure thats mostly just ass covering
<chadmed> like these devices are designed to be 100% reliable in just about every possible environmental scenario for at least 10 years with no intervention or maintenance, because they are literally the only thing keeping some people alive
<chadmed> in fact modern pacemakers wirelessly transfer data to a base station usually located next to the patient's bed. the magnetic flux that results from that data transfer is going to be far greater than anything the taptic engine could put out lmao
<nicolas17> I think the problem with strong magnets isn't that magnetic fields mess with the pacemaker because it's not protected enough
<chadmed> yeah the main risk from close contact is displacement
<nicolas17> the problem is that many pacemakers have a reed switch and change modes with it, and doctors use such a magnet when doing the wireless diagnostics thing
<chadmed> yeah
<nicolas17> so it's like, they are affected by magnets *by design*
<chadmed> which makes sense for the magsafe warning, though im not sure if iphone's magsafe is even strong enough
<chadmed> those switches are hard to actuate specifically to avoid these scenarios
<nicolas17> it's probably within enough orders of magnitude to justify the ass-covering
<nicolas17> I read that there's an ongoing lawsuit against Apple because an amber alert caused an alert sound so loud on AirPods that it blew a kid's eardrum
<nicolas17> and I don't deny it happened but the allegations were *so* obviously exaggerated as much as the lawyer thought they could get away with
<chadmed> what a litigious society lmao
<nicolas17> I *could* accept that it really did blow his eardrum and it did cause permanent hearing loss and it is something one could reasonably sue for
marvin24 has joined #asahi
<nicolas17> but "The lawsuit claims that the Amber Alert "tore apart" B.G.'s eardrum, damaged his cochlea, and caused injuries to his hearing. He has since suffered from bouts of dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and nausea, and there is permanent hearing loss in his right ear"
<nicolas17> "has suffered significant temporary and permanent, continuous injuries, pain and suffering, disability, and impairment. He has suffered mental anguish, emotional trauma, physical harm, injuries, disability, and impairment in the past and that will continue into the future"
<nicolas17> come on, that's clearly overstating it as much as they can get away with

<ktz_[m]> <chadmed> "ktz_: sorry i cannot let this..." <- I never mentioned anything about electronic implants. You can go through the literature and draw your own conclusions... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/vhJKuzqJlXPFJssQQIIEkyOo)
<ktz_[m]> And keep in mind that such studies aren't any likely to get funded or conducted at all since noone performs harmful in vitro.. this holds true for the mmWave spectrum opening up in the foreseable future which is probably even worse yet they're placing 5g antennas to every block many times disguised
<ktz_[m]> but that's for #_oftc_#asahi-offtopic:matrix.org
<ktz_[m]> s/vitro/vivo/
<chadmed> sorry mate but my day job is actually biomedical research so linking to a pubmed search query is not going to change my mind on this
<chadmed> im well aware of the extant literature on the topic and in the nearly 4 decades of people publishing flawed studies in fringe journals not a single one has actually managed to prove anything close to a causal link between electromagnetic radiation in the bands used for communications and cancer
<chadmed> anyway thats all i will say on the matter in this channel since it is stupendously off topic and really not even worth discussing at all
<Cy8aer[m]> > fyi people I meassured insanely absurd magnetic fields caused everytime you press on the mousepad.. just for context from pubmed: " The Earth’s magnetic field shows the intensity in the range of 30–70 µT, which is a natural stimulator of physiological processes in a living organism \[8\]"

<Cy8aer[m]> Do theses pads have a mechanical or a virtual click (aka a ball shot from one side to another via - a magnetical field, like the iphones have)?
Ry_Darcy has joined #asahi
<chadmed> yeah they use the taptic engine or a derivative of it at least
<Cy8aer[m]> The main problem is that you cannot really test it like with a switched off iphone (then the key is really "dead") because every event to the keyboard/pad will switch the device on and it would click again.
<ktz_[m]> <Cy8aer[m]> "The main problem is that you..." <- well to a certain degree you can if you unplug the batteries it dies as soon as you unplug the power cable

<marcan> it does retry up to 5 times (or was it 10 now?) if the connection dies or times out
<marcan> it used to have trouble with that but I improved it soon after release
<marcan> the downloads are chunked so it will pick up where it left off
<marcan> if it outright fails entirely you do have to clean up yourself and start over though, it deliberately doesn't keep any cache because it streams the download straight to the target partition

<nyanpasu64> is there any news on asahi since the alpha release? i checked the twitter, it seems electron works now, telegram desktop still doesn't
<nyanpasu64> still no speaker audio on macbook air?
<nyanpasu64> my device developed a screen fault (horizontal stripes) and idk how to back it up before sending it in to repairs. Time Machine requires scrounging around on my disks for something with hundreds of gigabytes to create a partition (hfs/hfs+/apfs, don't even know which) or let macos reformat the whole thing. and asahi only connects usb devices as usb2.
<kode54> telegram desktop works if you build jemalloc yourself
<nyanpasu64> oh, /usr/lib/libjemalloc.so.2 is dynamically linked?
<kode54> yes
<kode54> and that library is built by arch linux arm on a 4k kernel, so it's 4k
<kode54> you have to build it yourself on the 16k kernel
<kode54> install asp, `asp checkout jemalloc` to some source directory, and makepkg it
<kode54> oh wait
<kode54> that's right
<kode54> you have to do the thing that alarm does to all their packages
<kode54> you have to manually add/change the arch definition to include aarch64
<kode54> then it will build
<nyanpasu64> it can't render the qr code... (full message at https://matrix.org/_matrix/media/r0/download/matrix.org/fFxgeBrIgVFGHWEwjzXQzfjN)
<nyanpasu64> i have no interest in debugging tho
<nyanpasu64> (this is with jemalloc-git)
eroux has joined #asahi
<mps> kode54: telegram-desktop worked from the start for me (alpine linux)
<mps> I think it is built without jemalloc
<kode54> it uses it
<kode54> jemalloc has to be built for the maximum page size it needs to support
<kode54> alarm mostly supplies everything built for 4k
<kode54> wouldn't know why the QR code renderer is broken
<mps> kode54: -DDESKTOP_APP_DISABLE_JEMALLOC=ON
<kode54> and I never tested it, so I didn't know it was
<kode54> I always log in with my phone number and password anyway
<kode54> then remember that a newly logged in instance can't delete old sessions
