<sven> dan[m]1234: there's a WIP branch with usb3 support on the type-c ports but that still needs work

<_jannau_> dan[m]1234: 120Hz for the mbp 14/16 will come with the dcp driver and probably for the hdmi output if HDMI 2.0 has enough bandwidth for 120Hz at the resolution
<_jannau_> sven: what about usb 2.0 support upstream? Shall we push for the sent reset patch or do you want to wait?
<sven> no, that's unfortunately also tangled with the tbt mess :/
<sven> i think it's still correct but i'd like to be sure
<sven> my current tbt wip stuff e.g. serrors when booting with any usb cable connected
<sven> i don't think it's related to that reset patch but i'm not sure yet

<mps> yesterday I installed 'asahi' on another mbp I've got. installed m1n1 and u-boot using installer and selecting uefi + u-boot, then booted from usb and created two small partitions of 20GB, one for rootFS and one for home
<mps> after that installed alpine over net, everything worked out of the box. very pleased with current status

<_jannau_> how do you connect hdmi to the macbook air? for dp alt mode based converters it's mostly the same
<_jannau_> displaylink based devices just need usb 2 or 3
<sven> dp alt mode is only partly brought up with the atcphy code so far. it also needs some additional "dpphy" pokes and apparently there's also some dp-crossbar that must be configured
<cmalvi[m]> <_jannau_> "how do you connect hdmi to the..." <- with an usb dongle

<Serentty[m]> <m1n1m4[m]> "hello, is it possible to use usb..." <- I have not tried, but I do know that at the moment you would be limited to USB 2.0 speeds. So that would be 480 Mbps theoretically, and in reality lower. That might be good enough if your internet speed is not higher than like 300, and if you don’t need faster communication in your LAN.
<mps> usb wifi and ethernet works fine, that is how I used asahi first two months

<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> How’s the battery life been for any of you running Arch with Gnome 42? Compared to latest MacOS? On a 2021 MBP 14”. Rough idea so I know if I should wait (battery drain was an issue with my last Dell machine - ended up getting a Mac like I should have).
<tpw_rules> from what i hear it's measurably worse but still really good. plus it's easy to remove if you don't like it
<tpw_rules> if you already own a mac there's no reason not to try
rdltromw^ has quit [Remote host closed the connection]
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> To be fair, I bought the Mac for the hardware, not so much for the OS. lol
<tpw_rules> then why are you asking if you should try a different os
<j`ey> AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]: also there's no GPU or video acceleration, which means power consumption is higher
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> Because I eventually will dual boot the two. I just don’t want to boot in and then remove it so soon since at the end of the day I want my battery to last. The less I mess with the Mac from stock configuration the less of a chance it’ll screw up the Mac side at some point. I had plenty of hell trying to make my Dell XPS work okay with at least three distros and it was way too frustrating.
<tpw_rules> it's super easy with asahi
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> I just want to wait until the battery life is more tame, especially GPU acceleration (hopefully for gaming at some point as a bonus).
<j`ey> AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]: how long do you need it to last for?
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> I bought it for personal productivity… just trying to get the most out of my purchase.
<mps> AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]: I use conservative cpu policy and practically don't notice lagging in speed and with this battery life is about 10-12 hours
<mps> ofc, if I run cpu intensive tasks it is not so long
lgarylmtdea^ has joined #asahi
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> <mps> "Anthony Glyadchenko: I use..." <- Ah. For context, I think I’m looking for something to play around with and been trying to buy a Steam Deck since I’m starting a new job next Monday (waiting a few weeks is better than waiting a year in a queue) and need something for quick work breaks since my Switch is getting outdated. My flaw is that I tend to overtinker including with messing around with something like my recently
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> bought Mac in the meantime. It isn’t as much battery drain as battery wear when messing with it. I might just run ARM PopOS or Arch in UTM as a compromise.
<AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]> AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]: Relevancy of the Steam Deck in this conversation… been hard to deal with StockX lately and need a different work break distraction. don’t want to make my personal Mac have more battery wear just for Asahi
<mps> I use macbook for daily work and web reading, sometimes videos watching and I quite satisfied, but I don't use heavy desktops and/or games, expect compiling
<nicolas17> AnthonyGlyadchenko[m]: there's always a chance you'll screw up the Mac side at some point so you should keep backups of your data anyway :)
