<Dcow[m]> I think he mean 1 chip NAND solution, for M2 with 256Gb.
<Dcow[m]> AFAIK, I heard that new M1 airs also come with 1 chip
<chadmed> oh the answer to that is you will not notice that in the slightest unless youre absoluely punishing these things
<chadmed> another certified max tech moment for you i guess "guys look this $1100 consumer laptop gets hot when transcoding 8k 10 bit hevc!!!!"

<Dcow[m]> Still a shame though, apple drops ssd speed marketing and at same time they started to produce 2 variants with drastically different TTX
uniq has quit [Quit: My MacBook has gone to sleep. ZZZzzz…]
<Dcow[m]> sorry, I mean Tech Specs
<Dcow[m]> languages mixup)
<chadmed> yeah but like i said its not really of any consequence for typical consumer use
<chadmed> the air is for uni students to watch youtube story time vlogs and use ms office on
<chadmed> if they do something similar to the "pro" devices then i will be miffed

<phire> It's a bit of a hard problem for SSD manufactures in general
<chadmed> theres three companies in the world who make flash memory, they demonstrably collude to fix prices, AND theres a semiconductor shortage
<phire> The preformance of an SSD is more-or-less tied to the exact components used, meaning they can't change components without drastically changing preformance
<phire> I'm not a big fan of the apple's new approach of just not adversting performance at all
<chadmed> did they drop ssd speed numbers from the t600x stuff too?
<phire> because, people care about preformance, and people publish benchmarks, and 3rd party benchmarks might as well be tech specs
<phire> I'm not seeing SSD specs preformance clams anywhere on their techspeds, including t600x
<chadmed> ah that sucks
<chadmed> Fast. And vast. Get jaw-dropping 7.4GB/s read speeds23 from the up to 8TB SSD — up to two times faster than the previous generation.
<phire> interesting, I was looking at the tech specs page, not the marketing read
<phire> seems they never listed it on the tech specs page, which is odd. they list memory bandwidth
<chadmed> apples tech specs are basically just what dodgy pc component stores put in their listing titles, no actual performance numbers apart from battery life

<mps> building same kernel with same config on m1pro macbook take real 2m 55.09s, while on neoverse-n1 with 80 cpus takes real 8m 14.19s
<mps> disk speed probably slows neoverse to some degree

<jannau> asahi-wip/6.0-rc1 boots works for me on m1 max. I blame the issue with the initramfs on grub for now
<ar> mps: with what parallelism ("-j")? Also, try building in tmpfs
<j`ey> jannau: are you on the older version of grub that you sent markan? or the newer one he had issues with too
<jannau> I was initially on the newer version which worked as far as I could tell but downgraded to grub-2.06.r261.g2f4430cc0-1 which did not fix the issue
<jannau> I guess I could test building grub with the proposed increased heap
farghal has joined #asahi
<mps> ar: -j89 on neoverse, and -j10 on m1pro
<ar> that would make the neoverse box probably slower than my lx2160a router thing, which seems… improbable
<jannau> from the behavior a messed up boot environment seems like a good explonation. no output from the kernel whatsoever with earlycon and last printed message being "exit bootservices"
<mps> ar: disk is on the on the net I think
<mps> ar: but anyway disk shouldn't make it so slower
<mps> jannau: fyi, I'm using latest released grub and without initramfs, but still doesn't boot
<jannau> can you try booting the kernel directly with u-boot to eliminate grub as cause
<j`ey> jannau: exit bootserivces is already inside the kernel, well at least the efi stub
<mps> jannau: I could later when I come home from meeting
