travmurav[m]: You wrote (at Qcom-Secure-Launch) that "If BCD configuration tells winload.efi that virtualization is disabled, it continues to launch the OS in EL1."
<icecream95>
Do know what BCD configuration option that is?
<icecream95>
I tried setting hypervisorlaunchtype off, but Windows still tries SL and then reboots when the availability check fails.
<icecream95>
Maybe I should just implement nested virt... can't be *too* hard, given that I don't care about security so can directly use Stage 2 mappings from the inner hypervisor

<travmurav[m]>
icecream95: sadly by now I might not remember, I figured that somewhat experimentally when I was REing it by binary patching the windows bootloader
<travmurav[m]>
icecream95: is it w10 or 11?
<travmurav[m]>
I think in 11 hyper-v is mandatory
<travmurav[m]>
icecream95: but I think it was something about that or about hyp-based-security
<travmurav[m]>
there was certainly a thing that "disabled" SL and, at least apparently, windows booted without "virtualization support"
<travmurav[m]>
sadly seems like this project doesn't have my notes (or I didn't take them?)

travmurav[m]: Thanks, I'll look at that BCD next time I'm in Windows. But it doesn't matter too much as long as I can implement nested virt.
<icecream95>
I hope Windows doesn't have any "security" things to stop running under nested virt, and just relies on the TPM measurements to prevent attacks
<travmurav[m]>
fwiw iirc virt-based-security is mandatory for w11 if you're targeting that
<icecream95>
"mandatory" in what way? QEMU boots with -machine virtualization=off
<travmurav[m]>
well just saw that as a requirement somewhere and i.e. my laptop vendor had to fix firmware (virt/sl was broken in release one) to "allow windows 11 to work"
<travmurav[m]>
maybe it's """mandatory"""
<icecream95>
I guess it could be that specific CPUs / firmware / ACPI stuff trigger the mandatoryness
<icecream95>
I thought that WinPE might not bother with Secure Launch, but it happens there too. I wonder what a pre-X1E version would do.
<maz>
I can definitely run w11 under KVm without NV.

<maz>
but on the other hand, I did override quite a few things so that it doesn't fret over the lack of TPM, for example.
<maz>
maybe that includes "EL1 only"

maz: Is there even any VMM that uses KVM nested virt? QEMU doesn't seem to support it yet.
<maz>
icecream95: out of tree QEMU and kvmtool.
<maz>
I am making a point in *not* merging the userspace ABI.

@any of my fellow asus vivobook enjoyers, does anyone of you know how to get into the firmware boot menu? I can get into the firmware settings, but every time I want to boot of
<SpieringsAE>
of a usb stick I have to do it through the windows boot manager
<SpieringsAE>
which is very annoying
<SpieringsAE>
I've tried literally all of the f keys and del, nothing
<maz>
what I did on the devbox is to configure the firmware to always scan for a USB disk. it slows down the boot by about 30 seconds, but I then don't have to think about it.

SpieringsAE: hold down the Esc key and keep it held down; then press the power button
<JensGlathe[m]>
On the ThinkBook booting from USB is ignored, even if set. You need to press F12. Since it also has a SD card reader, this would probably work, too. Hoping to get a working FW update tool eventually.

I'm trying to debug a boot failure on the t14s after updating my kernel
<bylaws>
Disabling msmdrm just leaves a few pixels of text in the top left that seems to be part of the text log
<bylaws>
But that only happens partway through the initramfs, before that the console works fine
<bylaws>
Any ideas what I need to disable ontop of msmdrm here?
